MORE EXPRESS Ronsans.—On Saturday ten or
twelve boys were arrested in Philadelphia for
robbing one of Adams' Express cars of a large
quantity of cotton. The juvenile thieves were all
committed for trial.
Tam Lamaze. Team—The river is gradually
falling, but rafts continue to run. The lumber
business here and at Middletown and Columbia is
quite active, our up-river friends readily disposing
of their stook at remunerative prices.
PLINE &Burr LIVERY. —The livery establishment
of Mr. Samuel S. Davis, in Pine street adjoining
the Morgan House, is stocked with the best variety
of horses and carriages in the market_ Those who
wish to hire at moderate rates should give him a
call.
Tns Canal..—Water is now being let into the
Eastern division of the Pennsylvania canal, and
in the course of a day or two the whole line will
be in navigable order. But for the delay in com
pleting the new look two miles east of this city,
navigation would have been resumed on the first
day of the month.
KEErste or THE Looa-ter—The re-appointment,
by Council, of Mr. Daniel Callender to the position
of lock-up keeper, is a compliment well merited.
He served three years in that capacity and dis
charged his duties in such a way as to win univer
sal approbation. He was constantly at his post,
and always efficient, attentive and obliging.
Rltattsivrow.—We learn that Captain George
W. P. Davis, of this city, is about to resign his
commission and return home. He served as lieu
tenant in the three months' campaign, at the close
of which he recruited a company for the war and
was commissioned as captain. Physical disability,
resulting from a severe injury to one of his feet,
compels bis resignation.
THE Ksrucis continue to operate successfully in
this city, a new swarm having arrived within a
few days. Several persons were victimized on
Saturday night in various localities. One individ
ual was assaulted on the street, knocked down, and
robbed of about nine dollars in money and some
other articles. The _perpetrators of this outrage
are spotted, and no doubt will be arrested.
MAD Doas.—The mad dog excitement which has
prevailed in neighboring towns for Min weeks
past, is likely to extend to this city. The other
day a strange dog, exhibiting unmistakable symp
toms of hydrophobia, passed through the upper
wards and was finally killed, after having bitten
several other canines.' This circumstance reminds
us that the time for enforcing the law requiring
dogs to be muzzled or confined is not far distant.

of building. Within a brief period a great many

the rolling mill and Pennsylvania railroad shops,
for building purposes, and the spirit of improve
ment will soon be visible in that locality, which is
destined to become one of the most densely popu
lated and thriving sections of our city: The lots

CONE Assn,—Che a p John has come again, and
is prepared to furnish the public with everything
from a needle to an anther, at such astonishingly
low rates as must induce every one to rush there
for bargains. In these times of extortionate prices
Cheap John is a public benefactor, espeeially to the
poor class of community, and we are not surprised
to find his store, neat door to Eby & Rankers, on
Market street, constantly crowded with easb-pay
ing easterners. How he manages to sell at such
low figures is a mystery to us; but the fact that he
:Ices so is sufficient to insure his success*.
SCHOOL TRAMMED AND DIRECTONS.—The last
number of the School Journat contains some items
interest, which we condense and print for the
benefit of teachers and directors in this city and
eeauty. First is a letter from Hon: G. S. Bout
well, Revenue Commissioner, stating among other
things, that, "Certificates to teachers issued by
aunty Superintendents," and -"Certificates by
resident and Secretary of Board of Directors to
Zennty Superintendent that schools have been
lened and in operation according to law," must
each btsve•a ten cent stamp affixed; and that
"Agreemezqs or contracts between Teachers and
Beard of Directors to teach," must each have a
five cent stamp affixed. In the first and last in-
Stances the stamp duty is to be paid by the teat:diet%
la the second, by the secretary of the hoard, and
:barged to the district.
A TRAITOR IN THE CITY.—The poor fellow, Joe
Spring, out of whose idle and incoherent ravings
Mr. Washington Barr and the Telegraph have
been trying to make a little joint capital, by bring
ing their own double distilled, rectified loyalty in
broad contrast with his, is, we learn from reliable
authority, trembling on the verge of insanity.—
Mr. Barr must have suspected as much, or be is
inexcusable for permitting him to run at large;
and if be did suspect it there is no rebuke which
can be administered too stern for the public dis
play he has made of the occurrence. In all this
the Telegraph has been hie faithful and worthy
adjunct. The "black barber" who refused to shave
Spring, after listening for a time to his crazy
rhetoric, may be supposed to have acted from pa
triotic, and therefore commendable motives—but
we doubt whether there is charity enough in this
community to believe that either Darr or the Tele
graph acted under the same influence. According
to their showing there is a fall grown man in the
city boldly talking treason and avowing his pre
ference for Jeff. Davis and the Southern Confede
racy, and yet they have made no movement to
arrest him. Why, Copperhead as they call us, we
would permit no sane man to talk to us as Barr
says Spring did to him, without testing the virtue
of the law. No wonder a correspondent has sent
us the following :
"The question to be discussed at the next meet
ing of the loyal League, we understand to be
this :—'Which is the greater fool—Wash. Barr or
Joe Spring 7? A full attendance is eXpeeted."
PourtcaL PBEACEFINGL—The city of Harrisburg
is not the only place where people have begun to
be weary of political preaching. A notable ease
is that of the ipld Congregational Society" of New
Boston, Connecticut, where Dr. Lyman Beecher E 0
long preached. This society, at a recent meeting,
passed the following sensible resolution, which
certain congregations here and elsewhere would
do well to imitate :
Voted, That the pulpit committee of this society
are hereby instructed that whenever they employ
a minister of the Gospel to preaott in their meet
ing-house on the Sabbath, they shall first inform
said minister that ho is employed to preach the
Gospel truth according to the Bible doctrine,
Christ and him crucified, and that only. That he
is strictly prohibited, by vote of this society, from
delivering any discourse of any description upon
the present war, and 'that he shall not allude to
the matter either in prayer or sermon.
RAILROAD AEPAIRS.—On the Reading and Co
lumbia railroad the cars are now making regular
trips between Columbia and Litis. The Philadel
phia and Reading railroad eompany,"on the let
inst., took possession of the Little Schuylkill rail
road and the East Mahanoy railroad, penetrating
to the bead of the Mahanoy coal basin, in the
second coal field of Schuylkill county. These
works have been leased to the Reading company
for a term of fourteen years front the lst of April.
Trains from the Mahanoy Valley will now run
regularly through the immense tunnel on the East
Mahanoy line.
MORE Vscruits.—Two lumbermen, who stopped
in this any on their return from Columbia, had
their pockets picked immediately after leaving the
cars at the depot. One lost fifteen and the other
twenty-five dollars. We learn that Columbia and
Marietta are overrun with pickpockets, and that
large sums of money have exchanged bands since
rafts commenced to arrive. At Marietta, the other
day, one fellow was detected in the attempt, and
summary punishment would have been inflicted
upon him by the indignant "yanks," had he not
managed to escape from the village.

of CARPET, which we will sell at 75 cents per

The safe of the Adams Express Company was robbed
on Wednesday night between Baltimore and Han is
burg. Ii contained various sums of money in currency
and gold, a large number of United States certificates ,
of indebtedness, United States five-twenty bonds, and
cheeks of the United States Treasurer on the Assistant
Treasurer of New York, payable to the order of the
Adams Express Company. A reward of Five Thousand
Dollars is offered by the Company. The public are re

Dear Sir—l would state that I was induced to use
BRANDRETIPS PILLS through the recommendation of
John It. Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely . restored to health by their use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and he
tried everything, bat was not relieved. Finally, he took
one Brandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with occasional doses of eix. In one
month he was able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
