other States who refused to go to war, were %ken
there in chains. A contemporary thinks that these
men will make the rebels "howl" when they get
dawn in Dinie's land_
LANCASTERIAN Selmer. tfousu.—The rooms in
this building are now being fitted up for the recep
tion of the North ward male schools. Both teach
ers and pupils are glad to get back to the old, fa
miliar and comfortable quarters from which they
have so long been excluded.
MORN WOUNDED SOLI/DlRS.—About one hundred
wounded soldiers from the Washington hospitals
arrived here last night, and were quartered at the
Camp Curtin, Cotton Mill and German Reformed
hospitals. Additional buildings will have to be
provided for the accommodation of those now here
and a large number yet to come.

Taw Comity Pilisos.—The new prison keeper,
Mr. George W. Simmons, takes possession today
and enters upon the discharge of his official duties.
We have no doubt he will make a competent and
efficient officer. If rumor be true, Mr. Downey,
for some jeans past superintendent of the weaving
department, is to be retained as under-keeper.

is seared out of half the little wit it ever had by a
report that an ergaization of the K. G. C.'s is be
ing perfected in this city, and threatens exposure
as soon as it learns the names of those in the Cir
cle. 0, don't ! We know nothing of such an or
ganization, and don't believe there is one, in this
city at least—but if there is, it has higher game
in view than the Telegraph. Don't be scared,
Softy, the Circle won't hurt you, if you behalre
yourself. We guarantee that much.
ARREST OF A PICKPOCICET.—The "professionals"
continue to ply their vocation at the depot. Yes
terday afternoon a young man answering to the
name of Win. M. Mduren, (no doubt a fictitious
one,) was arrested by officers Deeters and Camp
bel, for attempting to pick the pocket of one Wm.
Fay, a discharged soldier. He was detected in
the act by two or three persons. Alderman Kline
committed him for trial. The soldier being exces
sively intoxicated at the time, and having a large
amount of money in his poesession, was taken to
the lock-up fur Hato keeping until this morning.
STOLEN PROPERTY FOREL—Lad week we chron
icled the arrest and imprisonment of two young
men named Christian R. Spayd and Charles
irGranigan, charged with robbing a boot and
shoe store on Ridge avenue. On Monday night
the Chief of Police succeeded in finding 'one, pair
of the stoles boots at the restaurant of Thomas
Earley in State street, where Spayd had sold them.
It is probable the balance of the property, valued
in the aggregate at twenty dollars, was disposed
of at various shops and saloons. The two young
men arc still in prison awaiting trial.
Musroem ENTERTALIMENT.—The complimentary
benefit to Miss Kate Dean will take place on
Thursday evening next, the County Commissioners
having very kindly and generously granted the
use of the Court House. A rare selection of patri
otic songs and ballads will be announced to-mor
row which doubtless will give general satisfaction.
Miss Dean will be assisted by Miss Lizzie Yohe
who accompanies her on the piano forte. Tickets
can be had at the hotels and music stores. We
anticipate a fell and fashionable audience for the
fair beneficiary.
THE MURDERER OF MARY ELIZABETH GERMAN.
We were informed yesterday afternoon by a legal
gentleman of this city, that Mr. Emanuel German
recently received a letter from a friend in Dayton,
Ohio, a military gentleman named Captain Hess,
to the effect that a man now confined in prison
there on a charge of murder, answers the descrip
tion, in almost every particular, of the murderer
of his little daughter. Captain Hess, in company
with a lawyer of Dayton, visited the man in prison
and had a protracted conversation with him, and,
from some indirect disclosures made by the pris
oner, Captain Hess believes him to be the man
who murdered little Mary Elisabeth German near
thie city last October, and who x has thus far es
caped detection . We are further informed that an
intelligent witness, who saw the supposed murderer
in company with his victim on the evening prior
to the terrible tragedy, is about to leave for Day
ton, to examine the prisoner. If, as Captain Hess
believes, he is the man, the witness will be able
to identify him at a glance. We anxiously await
further developments, and trust that the mystery
which has so londshrouded this affair is soon to
be solved, and the fiendish perpetrator of one of
the most foul and unnatural crimes on record
brought to justice.
BERGER ALDERMAN KLINR.—.A Dumber af Amos
were disposed of by Alderman Kline yesterday
morning. Two straggling soldiers named Wm.
Bark and John Baumgardner, en route to join their
regiments, left the train on its arrival•in this otty,
got intoxicated, and were arrested for disorderly
conduct by officer Deetors. They were handed
over to the Provost Marshal, who will forward
them to the seat of war.
An itinerant "typo" from one of the western
counties, presenting a somewhat dilapidated ap
pearance, and giving the name of Samuel Hazlett,
was found lying around loose on the railroad track,
in danger of being crushed to death by passing
trains.' Officer beaters provided him with safer
and more comfortable quarters in the lock-up.
Samuel's form was considerably battered, and from
the condition of his clothing he had evidently been
making an impression in the mud. He went to
the inebriates' asylum for twenty-four hours to
recuperate.
An old offender, Amos Cowan, Whose name is
familiarlo the readers of our police reports, was
.up ,on a very serious charge. Between one and
two o'clock yeiterday morning he was discovered
larking around the premises of David Mumma,
Esq., in the Sixth ward. He was repeatedly or
dered to leave, and manifesting no disposition to
comply, Mr. Mumma discharged a pinto' at him,
which had the effect of canting him to "skedaddle"
towards the river. Only a short time elapsed
until the inmates of the house were again aroused
by the violent barking of a watch-dog, and Mr.
Mumma, on descending to the yitrd, found that hie
nocturnal visitor had returned. He made an at
tempt to eject him from the premises, but Amos
turned upon him, and after a brief but desperate
straggle, Mr. Mumma, with the assistance of , a
man in his employ, succeeded in tying 'his hands,
in which condition be was conveyed to the lock
up. Mr. Mumma is of the opinion that the design
of Amos was to rob his smoke house, but the evi
dence not being sufficiesit tc eustaip a prosecution
for laiceny, he was committed to prison for' trial
on a charge of assault and battery. During the
progress of the struggle between Mr. Mumma and
the nocturnal intruder 'the former received a severe
blow on the neck the effeete of which he felt for
some time afterwards. He was lucky to escape
without more serious injury.
Robert Roach, a member of the provost guard
was arrested in company with a young woman
named Henrietta Stein, for drunkenness and dis
orderly conduct, and annoying and insulting Mr.
D. F. Bashore and his .wife, who reside in a house
in State street, the basement of which is occupied
by an old man named George Manley,.with whom
Henrietta boards, and where she has made a prac
tice of receiving the visits of numerous soldiers.
Robert was handed over to Captain badge for dis
posal, and Henrietta went to prison for twenty
days. The Chief of Police arrested these parties.
Three "American citizens of African descent,"
one of them the color of a new saddle, and the
other two "black as the ace of spades,"-were ar
rested by the Chief of Police while in the act of
stealing coal from the yard of Mr. Byers on Mon
day night. They answered to the names of Charles
Gardner, Dick Carter and Tuoy Lee. The sec
ond named individual was arraigned last week for
the same offence and held to bail for trial. The
black trio were committed to prison to answer the
charge at the April term of court.
John Macdonald, an honest-looking old Scotch
man from Luzerne county, who same here on busi
ness, got into bad company, was invited to take a
few "nips," yielded to the temptation, and bet
being accustomed to Harrisburg whisky, soon be
came completely obfuscated, in which condition
he was found by the Chief of Police and quartered
in the lock-up. He had $16.85 in his pocket
which would have been stolen from him had be
remained on the street during the night. When
arraigned for a hearing yesterday morning the
unfortunate old man seemed to be in a very peni.
tent mood, remarked that he "was ashamed to
come before His Honor," and made a solemn pro
mise that he would never again be guilty of a simi
lar indiseretion. The Alderman fined him one
dollar and costs, which John cheerfully paid, glad
to mope going to prison.
HOLY WEEK---The present being the last week
of Lout, is Holy Week, and it will be observed by
special services in the Catholic and Episcopal
churches.- In the Catholic church Holy Week is
a season of great humility, which only ends with
the advent of Easter Sunday, when mourning is
turned into joy and the places of worship are
beautifully ornamented with flowers and ever
greens. To-morrow morning the Pontifical Mass
and blessing of the Holy Oils will commenee.
The ceremonies of Good Friday and Holy Saturday
will be exceedingly interesting and impressive;
and those who are fond Of good music' can hear it
at the Catholic church on Sunday. In the Epis
copal churches, Thursday evening is set apart for
the celebration of the Holy communion. This is
also the season of the Hebrew Passover, one of the
most important of the Jewlah feasts, when the
people eat unleavened bread and humble them
selves as directed by the Mosaic law. The exer
cises incident to the observance of the feast of the
Fassoier commence at sunset on Friday evening.
Services will be held in the Synagogue on Saturday
and Sunday mornings, and addresses appropriate
to the occasion be delivered.
TIIE PENNSYLVANIA CANAL.--The Pennsylvania
railroad company intend letting the water into
the Eastern division of the Pennsylvania canal to
day, and the other divisions on the 15th. This
division, which extends a distance of 45 miles
from Columbia, as far as the Junction, where the
Pennsylvania canal is connected with the canal on
the North and West branches •of the Susquehanna
river, has been very extensively repaired. Many
of the old looks have been removed, and others, of
a larger and glare massive frame of workmanship,
substituted; and the locks have all been widened
to admit of the passage of two boats, either in the
same or opposite directions at one time. To ac
commodate the . increasing wants of the people
trafficking on the upper and lower Juniata divis
ions of the canal, the repairs have been very heavy.
The bed has been deepened to'admit of the passage
of boats drawing nearly six feet of water, and the
substitution of new looks for the old, worn-out
ones, has been more extensively pursued-than ever
in the lower sections of the canal.
PEARSON'S PANORAMA or THE WAR.—This series
of pictures, illustrative of the present war, was
unfolded for the first time in this place last eve
ning. The hall was well filled by a delighted au
dience. Each scene as it passed received the un
qualified approval of the spectators. The various
battle scenes are depicted with life like reality,
while the contrabands of Fortress Monroe and
Beaufort brought roars of laughter. Those who
neglect to witness these soul stirring scenes will
let pass an opportunity seldom met with, and
which may be regretted.
• litAvrs Comm.—The river is now in good navi
gable order. Several heavy timber rafts,the advance
fleet of a largo number yet to . come, floated past
this city yesterday on the broad bosom of the Sus
quehanna, en route for 'Columbia, the great lumber
market of this region. In the course of a few
days the surface of the river will be literally
covered with rafts from the "wooden country" on
the North andOWest branches, and great activity
in the limber business may be anticipated.

ment, f or presentation to Col. James J. Conner,
of Ashland, Schuylkill county, as a testimonial of
their regard for him as a man and appreciation of
his many acts of generosity. The head of the cane
is solid gold, ornamented with several well exe
cuted engravings, among the number a military
coat of arms embracing all the implements of
warfare, cross sabres enclosed in a latirel wreath,
and a representation of company K on dress pa
rade. The engraving's are executed in a style we
have rarely seen equalled, and altogether the cane
is a beautiful and creditable specimen of artistic
skill. The place to get genuine gold and silver
headed canes is at Brady's, who has them manu
factured to order.
ESCAPR AND ARREBT.—On the 29th of January
last a woman named Mary Snyder, an inmate of
of the poor house, gave birth to a child, which
subsequently died somewhat mystetiously, and the
mother was charged with its murder. An inquest
was held by Alderman Kliue, and the evidence
elicited was of a nature to warrant the holding of
the woman for trial. Being too ill to bear removal,
she was left:in charge of the steward of the poor
house, where she remained in an 'apparently pros
trate condition until last Friday, when she man
aged to. escape. A few days afterwards it was
ascertained that she had gone to Thompsontown,
Juniata county, and yesterday officer Fleck started
in pursuit, found and captured her, and brought
her to this city last evening. Alderman Kline
committed the woman to prison for trial at the
coming term.

Dear Sir—l would state that I was induced to use
BRANDRETWS PILLS through the recommendation of
John B. Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their. nae. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyapeptic, and he
tried everything, but was not relieved. Finally, he took
one Drandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took 0110
Pill every day, with occasional doom of nix. In one
month he wan able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
