ring the present week en route for the South-west.

Buituranv.—The Pennsylvania railroad com
pany's ticket office at Blairsville was again broken
into on Friday. night last, but owing to the pre
caution of the agent in removing all the monies
and valuables from the office when leaving it, the
thief got nothing for his trouble.
MAYOR ROUX - roBTI for the present, transacts
business at the office of Alderman Kline, in Wal
nut street, and will attend every morning at nine
o'clock for the disposition of such offenders as may
have been arrested and caged in the lock-up the
night previous.
Fazes SHAD have made their appearance in our
market, but the prices at which they sell give
them a decidedly silvery flavor. Seventy-five
seats for a single small.sised shad is somewhat
"steep," and render these favorite fish a luxury in
which people of limited means cannot afford to
indulge.
Ifss: to Pzuuns.—Andy Spansler and a soldier
named Charles Jones, the former arrested by OM;
ter Campbell and the latter •by Officer Dealers,
were arraigned before Alderman Kline on Satur
day morning for drunkenness and disorderly con
duet. Andy got ten and Jones five days in the
Walnut street reformatory institution.
DAWN IN THE CAns.—A soldier named John Ca
vanaugh died suddenly on the Baltimore Express
train going west last Friday morning. He be
lted to the 102 d rennsylvaniaregiment. Money
in the amount of ninety-nine dollars was found
upon him. An inquest was held, and the body
kept at, Altoona, so that if he has any friends his
remains may be forwarded to them.
Corpse murs ilsnass or breastpins are hemming
popular everywhere. There are hundreds of thou
sands now worn by the Democracy of the Northern
States. The head of the Godess of Liberty
neatly cat out of a copper cent makes an elegant
"copperhead" breastpin. There is an active de-
Maud for them at fifteen cents each, and manu
facturers are doing a profitable business.
Ts* Comm.—We learn that water will be let
into the Pennsylvania canal on the first day of
April, and that it is designed to have the whole
line in navigable order by the fifth of the month.
Water will also be let into the North and West
branch canals on the first of April. Navigation
has already been resumed on the Union and
Schuylkill canals, and the boating business is quite
active.
Disarm—The performance at the Gaiety to
night will be for the benefit of the indefatigable
manger, Bob Edwards, and of course the patrons
of the institution will "do the handsome thing,"
in return for his untiring efforts to cater for their
amusement. Several new and attractive features
are to be introduced, and the entire programme
will be unusually rich and racy. All who can ap
preciate genuine wit and humor and good musk
should visit the Gaiety this evening.
AFRICANS vs. Dammam—On Saturday we
overheard an exciting discussion between an Alpo-
Monist and a Democrat on the bill now before
the Legislature to prevent the emigration of De
grees Into this State. In the course of the disous
sion the Abolitionist remarked : "I would as soon
be an African as some Dutchmen I have seen."
The Abolitionists generally entertain a higher re
gard fur Diggers than they do for our German and
Irish citizens.
Tile CALaßoosz contained but two occupants on
Saturday night, one of them a drunken saldier
who became so obstreperous and violent in his
demonstrations that the keeper was obliged to
handcuff him, in order to prevent his damaging the
cell and breaking out. His fellow-lodger was an
old bummer too much inebriated to make any dis
turbance. On being arraigned before Alderman
Kline yesterday morning both were discharged,
the former paying a fine.
Basis ON CONCERT Ss' , poss.—There is s bill now
before the Legislature that will have the effect of
closing u p au objectionable places of amusement
in the State. It imposes a penalty of $lOO for
giving any entertainment without license or rent
ing a hall for an unlicensed exhibition, forbids the
sale of liquor or the employment of females at any
plan of amusement under a penalty of $lOO, and
makes it the duty of every constable and ciao &
trate to arrest any person violating the act. The
bill is a good one, and will no doubt become a law.
Sun won Detre oas.—A few nights ago some arti
cles of clothing, to the value of twenty-seven dol
lars, belonging to a printer named Wentworth, were
stolen from his sleeping chamber in the White Hall
betel. The landlord, on being informed of the
theft, intimated that Wentworth lied, declared that
he bad nothing to lose, and threatened him with
personal violence if he persisted in pressing a
claim for his losses. Mr. Wentworth, justly indig
nant at the conduct of the landlord, did what any
other man of spirit would do ender similar cir
eon:lettuces—entered suit against hiaefor damages
to the amount of property stolen. A hearing of
the ease will take place before Alderman Ms
glauchlin this morning.
THE LAYS CITY ELECTION.—"The brilliant tri
umph achieved by the Democracy of the Capital
city at the recent municipal election, caused great
rejoicing among the "copperheads" everywhere
throughout the State. The editor of the Clinton
Democrat, who resided here for several years, is
quite jubilant over the result, and in commenting
upon it pays a handsome and well-merited com
pliment to the indomitable Democracy and the
gallant old standard-bearer who led them in the
contest and came out of it "with brows bound with
victorious wreaths." We quote a paragraph from
the Democrat's article to show the "copperheads"
of this city how highly their triumph is apprecia
ted by our political friends abroad •

burg. He is a man of distinguished patriotism,
ability and firmness, and we know will look to il
legal transactions committed in that city with an
eagle eye, even though they be attempted under
the pretended sanction of 'military authority.'
The late election was perhaps the most fiercely
contested of any that ever oeeurred in Harrisburg.
As no Republican dared to run, the 'Loyal (nig
ger) League' induced a weak-kneed Democrat of
considerable personal popularity to try his band
against the Democratic nominee. The army eon
tractors,abundant in Harrisburg, (who can scarcely
find real estate enough, even at ex traysgan t prices,
in which to invest their greenbacks,) spent their
ill-gotten gains in the wildest profusion to defeat
the stern old leader of the Democracy. Four mil
itary companies, who bad been acting as Provost
Guard for several months past, and who are nearly
ail Democrats, were marched to a distant point only
a few days before the election. The whole power
of the National and State administrations was
brought to bear. Corruption and tricks of every
description were resorted to. But all would,. not
do ! The Democracy of a doubtful city stood firm:y
by their gallant standard bearer and carried him
through in triumph They deserve to live until
their once happy nation is again restored to its
former state of peace, unity and prosperity. The
Democracy carry all the wards in the city except
one."
A COOL OPRRATION.—The other day a man
giving the name of Wm. Smith, and representing
himself as a tobacconist from Middletown, in this
county, was arrested in Philadelphia, charged with
breaking open the satchel of Mr. Wm A. Ingra
ham, of Cleveland, Ohio. The affair occurred in
the cars. It appears that Mr: Ingraham left his
seat for a few minutes on the arrival of the wes
tern train at Harrisburg, to get something to eat,
and requested S;uith, who bad 'taken passage fer
Philadelphia, tockeelt his seat for him. When he
returned he found his satchel broken open and
Smith engaged in rumaging its contents. The
conductor, Mr. Davie, asked him what he was doing
With the satchel, and be replied that he was ta
king care of it. Smith had a hearing before an
Alderman and was held in $5OO bail to appear at
court. We have made inquiry and ascertained
that there is no such man as Wm. Smith engaged
in the tobacco business at Middletown. Ito doubt
he is one of the traveling "professionals" who
operate on railroad taains.

troduced in the Legislature to prevent speculation
in gold. It provides that.banks and brokers, insu
rance and trust companies, savings institutions,
and other monied corporations, shall be prohibited
from making or continuing any loan or loans of
money, or otherwise, upon gold coin or bullion, or
paper representations of those or either of them,
or upon any foreign bill, or bill of exchange what
soever, under the penalt7 of a forfeiture of their
charters, or articles of asioeiation, as the case may
be, and any such loan or loans, so made or con
tinued to be made, shall be absolutely void, and
no action for the recovery thereof shall lie in or
be entertained by any court of justice of the State,
The second section provides that the act shall take
effect immediately. Should this bill become a law,
it will be another step towards checking specula
tion in gold.

News. Editors :—.I would solicit the privilege,
through your journal, of calling the attention of
the proper authorities to the miserable condition
of Canal street or Meadow lane, from Market to
Mulberry street, its condition being a disgrace to
the city, as the mud and filth in some parts of it
are from six to eight inches in depth. While I
understand there is a dispute in reference as to
whose duty it is to cleanse some portions of it, as
the city vacated it as a street, or had intended to
do so, yet it may bo necessary to remind the au
thorities that a nuisance which must breed disease
is indictable, whether on a public highway or on
private property. Ow's.

commenced rising on Friday, is now higher than
it has been at any former period during the past
year. The news from the North and West branches
represent en unusual flood in those streams and
ten or twelve inches of snow in the woods and
mountains. We may therefore look for a dama
ging freshet, and, when the water recedes a few
feet, for an immense fleet of rafts from the ofwooden
country." A large quantity of timber was taken
out last winter.
