terlan church, commenced last week, will be con
tinued for several days longer. The object is a
commendable one, and thus far the exhibition bee
been quite liberally patronized by white citizens.
A great variety of fancy articles are offared for
sale, and refreshments are served up in a style to
snit the taste of the most fastidious epicure.
listrr TowN.—The two rebel deserters, whose ar
rival in this city was noticed in our last issue, left
for the West yesterday afternoon, the military au
thorities here furnishing them with transportation
to Pittsburg_ While perambulating the eity on a
tour of observation, the met in their dilapidated
"secesh" uniforms, exeited a great deal of curios
ity and were "the observed of all observers." The
poor fellow have endured many privations and
hardships and we wish them a safe and speedy re
turn to their families.
Forren.—The iron money safe of the Adams Ex
press company, recently stolen from a Northern
Central railroad train, was found on Saturday near
Cockeysville. The appearance of the safe indicated
that the lock bad been blown open with gunpow
der. The Adams Express company offer a reward
of five thousand dollars for the recovery of the
certificates of indebtedness and government bonds.
All efforts to detect the perpetrators of this bold
and esteneive robbery have thus far proved fruit
less. The affair is undergoing a thorough kV-mi
tigation in Baltimore city.
ARREST OF SUSPECTED THIEVES.—On Saturday
night the shoe store -of Mr. James W. Dean, on
Ridge avenue, was forcibly entered - and robbed of
boots and Idioms to the value of over nineteen dol
lars. Suspicion attached to a young man named
Charles M'Granigan, who was interrogated on the
Ellbjest- At first he denied all knowledge of the
robbery, but finally informed officer Campbell that
be would show him where the stolen property was
concealed, and conducted him to the residence of
a young man named Christian K. Spayd, in the
Sixth ward. A search was at once instituted, but
no boots and shoes could be found. M'Granigan
insisted that they bad been deposited there on Sat
urday night, which statement was denied by Spayd,
who disclaimed any knowledge of the robbery.
M'Granigan declined making any further develop
ments, whereupon Mr. Dean made information
against both the young men before Alderman Ma
glanchlin for burglary and larceny. Tbey were
arrested by officer Campbell, and in default of bail
the Alderman committed them to prison for trial.
SPECULATION IN Day [icons.- - Cotten and woolen
'ods are selling quickly and at large profits.—
verything that has a substantial value in relation
the common wants of life is going up in price,
deveryhody that deals in merchandise is making
, oney. The poor man's comforts, coffee, tea , an _
ar, tobacoo and snob things, are getting to be the
oh man's luxuries, and with cotton at a dollar a
ound, it looks as if a cotton shirt might become
old wife's myth. Wool in cheaper than cotton,
ut it is on the advance, and has doubled in value
itbin a year. There is, however, a better pros-
Oct for a - supply of wool than of cotton, and men
f slender means and fixed incomes may find some
oulfort in the rageetion that "an old cloak makes
new jerkin." But business is good, and the profits
f speculation are large. Some day the bubble
[ 'nation will break. Every man most guess for
hnself when that will happen. In the meantime,
this smooth wave of apparent prceperity, it is
retiettt to keep an eye out for rocks and breakers.
O accident has carried up cotton and cotton
nwds and everything else. Another accident may
arry them down.
Lem. Ladisranow.—We have been on the look
out for the decision of the committee appointed by
the House of Representatives to examine into the
amount and condition of the powder stored in the
arsenal—an allusion to which, last fall, brought
upon us the wrath of the Adjutant General and the
Tefegroh. We have found the report and here
with present it, to show that in drawing the atten
tion of the peaceful neigborhood in which this
violent torpedo is 'mated, we were not in any
sense a traitor or a tory, an enemy "to the poor
laborer in the arsenal," his especial friend the Tele.
graph, or the Adjutant General:
HOUSE, MONDAY, March 2, 1863.
Mr. RAMSICY, from the Committee on Public
Buildings, submitted the following report:
The Committee on Public buildings and Grounds,
to whom leas referred the subject of examining
into the condition of the powder alleged to be
stored in the arsenal building, in this city, respect
fully report :
That they have made a thorough examination of
the magazine containing the powder, and find that
at present it contains about one and a half millions
of cartridges, principally for muskets, though some
are for cannon.
The Committee are of the opinion that the said
powder is as secure as it can he made in :such a
building, none being loose at present, but from its
close proximity to the main building (being only
separated by a thin. brick wall) it is no doubt in
danger of being at soy time destroyed, should fire
take place in any of tho workshops connected with
the building. The shops being used at night, also
renders it more insecure.
While your Committee believe that no means are
left untried to make the magazine secure, and that
great ears is exercised by the °Moen] of the Adju
tant General's office, who have charge, still so
large a quantity of ammunition alongside of the
public buildings of the State, and in the centre of the
city, surrounded by private buildings, and liable,
as your Cominittee believe, to destruction from an
explosion, causing an immense loss of property,
and perhaps life, should an accident occur, renders
it a matter of moment that some measures be
taken to remove to a secure place the magazine
referred to.
You Committee, therefore, recommend that an
act be passed, directing the Adjutant General
to purchase five acres of land, within a reasonable
distance of the city of Harrisburg, and cause to be
erected thereon a suitable building for a magazine,
and that provision be made for the ultimate re
moval i.f the arsenal to the place so selected by
the Adjutant General,
In a report of the proceedings of March 3d we
find the following, also relating to city interests.
Shift its reference to the committee nothing has
been heard of the bill
House bill No. 342, a further supplement to an
act to incerporate the city of Harrisburg, in the
county of Dauphin. r
Mr. Sncorumn. By particular request, I move
that this bill be ' , stored to a spools' committee,
consisting of five members.
The motion of Mr. &norm]) was agreed to.
MOUT& SCHOFIELD, FRISELAND, FOE, RHOADS and
Jecicaoa were appointed as the committee.
Tna COUNTY Paisos.—The new keeper, Mr. G. W.
Simmons, will assume the duties of his position on
the Ist of April. At the time of his appointment
John Lynch was recommended by a portion of the
Abolition board of inspeotors for the place of under
keeper, and it wet' generally supposed that he had
"a sure thing." But objection was made by Mr.
Simmons; and other members of the board, aware
of Lynch's utter incompetency, refused to unite
in his recommendation, and now he has "no show"
for the position. For years past John has been
indefatigable in his efforts to obtain an official
•`snap" of some kind, and the Abolition leaders
have "fooled him to the top of his bent." They
encouraged him by promises which, like pie ornate,
were only made to be broken, but having an
abiding faith in their eineerity, and being amb=-
Mons to fill an office, Sohn continued to do their
dirty work, strong in the hope of ultimate reward.
Since his rejectibn for under-keeper; however,
after a positive promise that he should Dave the
position, John's hope has given way to despair,
and his indignation against the false and treach
erous Abolition leaders knows no bounds. In
view of his shabby treatment by a party that he
has so long and faithfully eerved, poor Lynch may
well exclaim :
"Ingratitude ! then marble-hearted Send :
More hideous, when them elieweet thee in a friend,
Than the sea monster."
We are reliably informed that Mr. Downey, who
for some years past, has filled the position of
superintendent of weaving in the prison, will pro
bably be retained as under-keeper, the board of
inspectors having determined to abolish the weav
ing department, which has proved rather unproS.
table. Six of the nine looms are to be removed
shortly, three being temporarily retained to com
plete unfinished work. Mr. Downey's long expe
rience in the p - rison eminently qualifies him for
the place of under-keeper, and if the removal of
the preen I Competent officer, Captain Nevin, is
determined upon, no better selection could be
made.
TFIRIGHTS OF MARRIZD WON&F..—The follow
ing bill, whioh contact's important provisions, re
eently passed both houses of the State Legislature.
It is entitled "a supplement to the act to secure
the rights of married women," passed the eleventh
day of April, 1848; •
Be it enacted, &c, That the true intent and
meaning of the set of Assembly to secure the rights
of married women, passed the 11th day of April,
A. D. 1848, and the supplements thereto, are
hereby declared to be that no judgement obtained
against the husband of any married woman before
or during marriage, shall bind or be a lien upon
her real estate, or upon any interest the husband
may be entitled to therein, as tenant by courtesy.
It is said the passage of this sot will obviate a
great deal of the difficulty heretofore experienced
by conveyancers and the legal fraternity gener
ally throughout the State.
LOCK lona Doons.—Within a few days the
dwellings of several citizens have been entered
and robbed of clothing and various other articles
On Saturday a friend.of ours lost a valuable blan
ket shawl, which was taken from a rack in the
Nary while he was dining, and the article has not
yet been recovered. In these times when thieves
abound in our city, people should keep their front
doors looked. In many instances the thieves are
pretended beggars who, under pretext of soliciting
alms, visit the dwellings of citizens and appropri
ate whatever articles of value they can lay bands
upon. It frequently happens that all the mem
bers of a family are in the back part of the house,
thus affording the pilfering.intruders ample oppor
tunity to ransack the parlors with impunity.—
These things are done almost daily, and if house
keepers will not take warning and secure them
selves against intrusion and robbery they must pu
up with the consequences - of their negligence.

Tits RADICALS learned one thing by the late
oily election—that falsehoode and nick names do
not prove profitable_to their cause. Our prediction
that the "copperheads" would be out in swarms at
the election on Friday and sting Abolitionism to
death, was fully verified. _

Deer Sir—l would state that I was induced to axe
BRANDRPTIPS PILLS through the reemnraendation of
John K. Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and he
tried everything, but wag not relieved. tinnily, he took
one Brandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a doss of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with oceasional doses of six. In one
month he was able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
