CAPTAIN Awz..- T .The Telegraph. of Thursday
evening announced that Captain Asbury Awl was
under arrest for absenting himself from this city
without leave, and demanded his instant dismissal
in disgrace from the service. The same paper of
last evening contained a communication from
Captain Dodge stating that Captain Awl was not
under arrest, and had given no excuse for such a
proceeding. The Captain returned to this city
yesterday and demanded a retraction of the false
statement put forth by the nigger organ, and it was
obliged to some down. Having made a public re
cantation of one falsehood, the Telegraph, unable
to restrain its propensity for misrepresentation,
gives utterance to another, by asserting that it has
Captain Awl's own verbal declaration that he is n 9
Democrat. If the gallant Captain is the man we
take him to be tle nigger organ will have to re
tract this falsehood as promptly and emphatically
as it did the first.
Aurigae]) GRENSBACY9.—Thecounterfei tees are
beginning to extensively alter two dollar green
backs is fifties. When compared with a genuine
fifty dollar note, the cheat is quite apparent. In
the centre of each of the genuine bills—i e. the
twos and fifties—there is a fine steel engraving,
alike in all respects. This foot has doubtless sug
gested the idea of altering the twos. In the gen
uine fifties, however, the head is immediately be
tween the word "United" and the word "States,"
whereas in the "twos" the words are above the
engraving. In addition to this, the fifty dollar
notes are covered over on the back with the num
ber "50," which is not the case in the tailored
notes. Four or five cases of this nature have re
cently come to the notice of officers. With one
exception, however, the rogues have eseapea de
teption. No person would be likely to be deceived
by them a second time; but those who deal in "fif
ties" would do well to examine them carefully
when offered by strangers.
Economy . or CENTlL—Surprise is everywhere
expressed at the scarcity of cents, and no one is
able to give a satisfactory reason for it. A few
months ago they were almost the only currency,
aad both sellers and btiyers objected to receiving
them. Many of our citizens were obliged to take
them to market in rolls of twenty-five cents each,
to an extent that made them a positive nuisance
to carry- Cents were given iu exchange for dol
lar bills whoa but a small amount was to be taken
out, and no one could avoid carrying more or less
of them. Now it is difficult to get them, so much
so that many housekeepers are unable to buy any
thing of a less value than five cents. Thoseßost
affqeted by the Searcity of cents are least able to
bear it. Apple and cake venders, newsboys and
the keepers of small shops, all find it difficult to
make change, and many of them cannot, at times,
sell for that reason. The scarcity of cents is the
mere remarkable from the fact that they are being
made at the mint to the same extent that they were
before the suspension of specie payments, and are
put in circulation as fast as made. About two
thousand dollars' worth a day ar s e manufactured.
Tan ADAMS EXPRESS ROBBERY.-Fifty
sand Dottars Stolen.—ln our last issue we intima
ted that the money safe of the Adams Express
Company was recently stolen from a railroad train.
The robbery occurred last Wednesday night on the
Northern Central railwiy between Baltimore and
Harrisburg. The baggage master, with the mes
senger of the Express Company, Mr. Jos. Weitzel,
of this city, were both in the car, and everything
was all right when .they reached Cockeysville. Af
ter leaving the last named place, both of the parties
mentioned walked into the mail room, where they
remained for a short time, and on nearing Park.
ton, a distance of only nine miles from Cockeys
ville, Mr. Weitzel returned to the baggage depart
ment and discovered that the safe was gone. At
what point it was thrown from the car could not
be ascertained. The safe contained about fifty
thousand dollars in cash, a small portion of which
was in gold. There was a large amount of certifi
cates of indebtedness, but they are of no use to the
thieves, as payment was al once stopped. There
were also some government bonds, but they, too,
are valueless. The principal part of the money
had been sent from Washington, and was in tran
situ for the families of soldiers wbo'are now with
the army The company has determined to make
a rigid investigation of the matter, and to trace,
if possible, the perpetrator of the daring robbery.
The safe which contained the money and papers
weighed some four or five hundred pounds, and it
is supposed that more than one person was engaged
in throwing it from the car.
POLICIE COMM—In the police court yesterday
morning some further developments were made in
the case of Charles Williams, the suspected pick
pocket, and he was re-committed for another hear
ing. When first arraigned he represented. himself
as the keeper of a dry goods store in Boston, tray.
sling on business, but could give no references or
exhibit no papers to confirm his statement. Yes
terday morning he informed the Mayor that he
was a machinist and had worked at the business
for two years past. At the time of his arrest he
told officer Doctors that he bad just arrived on the
western train, whereas he had been seen loafing
about the depot during the entire night, in com
pany with two other suspicious looking strangers.
The fellow is evidently a "knack" but the evidence
of his guilt may not be sufficiently positive to
warrant the Mayor in holding him for trial.
Amos Cowan, an old peddler and resident of
Verbeketown, visited the depot while under the
ittluence of inebriating liquid, and mistaking that
institution for a hotel, took liberties in the ladies'
saloon for which officer Deeters ejected him. Be
subsequently worked his way 'up stairs into the
superintendent's office, divested himself of boots
and hat, and laid down upon the luxurious lounge
to enjoy the benefit of "tired nature's sweet resto
rer." But his dreams, whether pleasant or other
wise, were soon disturbed by officer Deeters, who
roused him from his drunken slumber and marched
him off to the ealabooae. Amos appeared before
the Mayor hatless and bootless, those articles ha
ving been left behind at the time of his arrest.—
H a yi ng no money to pay his Sue, the Mayor dis
charged him with a severe reprimand.
John Sellers, the man whose knee-caps slipped
out of place and impeded his locomotion to such
an extent that be had to be conveyed to the lock
up in a wagon, was fined one dollar and costs.
Only a few nights previous John was discovered
lying across the railroad track, and would have
been crushed to death by an approaching train but
for his timely discovery and rescue by the engi
neer.
A butcher from Cumberland county named Sim
mom came to this city to pay some money to a cat
tle dealer. Having a little change left he conclu
ded to indulge in a few "nips" before returning
home, and being unaccustomed to the brand of
whisky that "kills round a eorner," he fell early
in the campaign. Officer Campbell found him on
the street in an obfuscated and helpless condition,
and provided him with quarters in the lock-up.
Having spent all his money the unfortunate Sim
mons was obliged to borrow one dollar and fifty
cents to pay fine and costs, which he regarded as
rather "steep" for the privilege of taking two or
three drinks, and left with a decidedly unfavorable
opinion of Harrisburg hospitality.
The old musician, Lewis Fisher, was tip again
for the fourth time this week. Having repeatedly
violated his promises to leave the sity, the Mayor
concluded to cage him for several consecutive
days, in order to save our citizens from further
annoyance. Lewis is "joined to his idols" and be
yond the hope of reformation.

Dear Sir—l would state that I was induced to use
BRANDREITHI PILLS through the recommendation of
John B. Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and he
tried everything, but was not relieved. Finally, he took
one Drandreth's Pill every day fora week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with occasional doses of six. In one
month he was able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
Yours truly, RDWARD PURDY.

tive and dyspeptic; that after rying various remedies
and many ffhysiciana, he commenced using Brandreth's
Pills, nix to eight three times a week, and at the end of
one month the sore in his leg healed, and at the end of
two months he was entirely cured of costiveness, dye.

PURIFY THE BLOOD.—Not a few of
the worst disorders that afflict mankind arise from
the corruption that accumulates in the blood. Of all
the discoveries that have been made to purge it - out,
none have been found which could equal in effect Area's
COMPOUND EXTRACT OF SABEIAPAIMILL.L. It cleanses and
renovates the blood; instills the vigor of health into
the system and purges out the humors which make dis
ease. It stimulates the healthy functions of the body
and expels the disorders that grow and rankle in the
blood. Its extraordinary virtues are not yet widely
known, but when they are it will no longer be a ques
tion what remedy to employ in the great variety of
afflicting diseases that require an alterative remedy.—
Such a remedy, that could be relied on, has long been
sought for, and now, for the first time, the public have
one on which they can depend. Our space heredoes not
admit certificates to show its effects. But the trial of a
single bottle will show to the sick that it has virtues
surpassing anything they have ever taken. Sufferers
from Scrofula, Scrofulous Swellings and Sores, try it and
pee the rapidity with which it cures. Skis Diseases,
Pimples, Pu.tteles, Blotches, Eruptions, te.,- are soon
cleaned out of the system.
