We hive heard of no preparations for any publio demonstration in this city, but precnme the occasion will not be permit ted to pass by entirely unhonored. COL. enAlums T. Cenntem..—This gallant offi cer know in the city stopping at the Brady House. He is still suffering from the effects of wounds and !scent surgical operation, and some time must elapse before he will be in condition to resume active duty in the field. Cram Itimirrue.—A joint meeting of the Third and Fourth Ward Democratic clubs will be held at Umberger's hotel, in Walnut street this evening at 5 o'clock. A full attendance is desired. Se- Weral able speakers *ill address the meeting. The Democracy of the city generally are cordially in vited tckunite with us on the occasion. GEO. T. SHOEKMESE, President Third Ward Club. H. F. M'REYNOLDE, President Fourth Ward Club. FIRST AND SEL'OND WARDS.—The Democratic elnb of the first ward will hold a special meeting on Wednesday evening, March 18th, at 71 o'clock, at Mr. Brenneman's Black Horse hotel, in Paxton street. The Democratic club of the Second ward has kindly agreed to meet with us, and Ato De mocracy of the whole city is respectfully invited to attend also. Gen. Miller, our representative in Congress, and other popular speakers will address this meeting. By order of the club. Gao. F. WEAVER, JR., See y: LOYAL LEAGUE CANDIDATE FOR Msvon.--The "Loyal League" conference, composed almost ex clusively of Abolitionists, and mainly representing that party, after many unsuccessfal efforts yester day to get a candidate for Mayor, finally obtained one in the person of Mr. John Till, who, after much persuasion, consented to take the nomination. Mr. Till is a very clever man, but having got into bad company he must put up with the consequences. In the overwhelming defeat that awaits him we shall have another illustration of that kind of "Vaulting ambition which oierleaps itself And falls on the other side." MORE NEGRO SOLDIERS.—Another squad of ne gro soldiers, recruited in the western section of the State for a Massachusetts regiment, passed through this city yesterday en route for Boston. The sable sons of Mars were in fall uniform and looked quite ferocious. The recruiting of negroes is progressing vigorously in various parts of the country, and front present indications one fall regiment will soon be mustered into service and sent to the field among white soldiers. The zealous and ambitious Tom Chester, of this city, is working hard to get up a company, with the view of being commis sioned. as captain, and no doubt he will succeed. ARRESTED AT Ihisr.—ln December last an Irish man named Michael O'Brien, livingea abort dis tance above Dauphin, stole carpenter tools to the amount of Mx dollars from the shop of Mr. Thomas Touts. When the latter threatened to prosecute unless the property was restored, O'Brien swore that be would burn down Tents' shop and split his head open with an ax. A warrant for the bel ligerent Irishman wait subsequently issued, and repeated unsuccessful attempts were made by police officers of this city to capture him. Yesterday be made bold to visit Harrisburg, and while stagger ing drank about the streets was nabbed by special officer Charles Davis and taken before the Mayor who committed him for trial. Tam son Coltranmscr.--The Methodist ministers of this city have left for West Chester to attend the Philadelphia Conference, which meets in that place to-morrow. This is one of the highest tribunals of the church, and embodies all its ecclesiastic tal ent and dignitaries. This Conference represents part of Maryland, the State of Delaware, Philadel phia city and the South-eastern portion of Penn sylvania, including Dauphin county. It is com posed of preachers, deacons and elders. The business consists of the admission and ordination of preachers; examination of the character and conduct of its members; a review of missionary and educational interests, and the appointment of ministers and elders to the several stations for the ensuing year. DEMOCRATIC Orrx NomINATIONS.—A meeting o the Democratic Executive Comittee was held at Wagner's hotel last evening, Vice President W.- E. Osier in the chair.. returns from the vari ous wards were received and acted upon, and the following'gentlemen declared to be the Democratic nominees at large : Mayor—A. L. Roumfort. City Auditor—James M. Bay. School Directors,South District—Weidman Fors ter, Jacob Rouser. Salida' Directors, North District—John Edwards, IL F. Witeynolds. After the announcement of the nominations, a general, call was made for General Roumfort, the Democratic candidate for Mayor, who responded in a brief, dignifed and patriotic address, which was received with demonstrations of genuine en thusiasm. The committee then adjourned, to re assemble at the call of the President. DEMOCRATS DISCHARGED.—We learn that early last week one of the Abolition workmen at the state Arsenal was required, by an official con neatad with the Adjutant General's office, to fur nish a list of names of all Democrats employed in and about the Arsenal. The order was promptly complied with, and some twenty or more Demo crats, as we are informed, received notice that their services would not be required after last Saturday. All of these men; some of them heads of families, are thus thrown out of employment at an mule-. mat season, simpjy because. they belong to the Democratic party and will not sacrifice their man hood ruul political principles by tamely and basely Submitting to the dictatorial mandates of the Abo lition tyrants who bold high carnivalon Capitol hill, and denounce every man as a "traitor" who refuses to swear by the negro and endorse the nu eonstitational and treasonable measures of the charcoal dynasty at Washington. If proscription of all Democrats is to be the game of the Aboli tionists, as the late wholesale decapitation at the Arsenal w o uld 0061 M to indicate, it is to be hoped that when the Democrats tome into power they will play the Emma game and make a clean sweep in every department. Tax CITY ELECTIO.—WhiIe perambulating the city yesterday on reportorial duty we had ap op portunity of bearing a very. general expression of sentiment with regard to the Democratic nominees for city and ward efficers, Of course the many warm personal friends of Mayor Kepner, who pre ferred and worked for his nomination, regret his defeat; but the great mass of them gracefully yield to the will of the majority, and sacrificing all personal considerations upon the altar of prin ciple, will give General Roumfort their hearty and intone support Regarding him as an honorable and upright man eminently fitted for the position, and a sound and reliable constitutional Democrat, all staunch and true members of the party will go into the contest and labor earnestly and diligently for his success, and the election of the whole ticket. The howl raised by a few renegade Democrats who are now in secret league with the Abolitionists amounts to nothing. The unanimity of sentiment and determination of purpose manifested by the Democratic masses warrant ns in predicting a brilliant triumph on Friday next over the spoils ce hefts of Abolitionism, no matter who may be their candidate for Mayor. Marshaled under the broad banner of "the Constitution and the Union," the invincible Democratic battalions will march np in solid column to the ballot box, poll a united vote for the whole Democratic ticket, and elect it by an overwhelming majority. AN ABOLITION HARANOILIE.—The people of this city were invited to visit the Locust street Metho dist ehareh last Sabbath evening to hear the "fare well sermon" of Rev. Franklin Moore. In re sponse to the invitation a large and intelligent audience assembled, but the sermon did not prove to be exactly the kind of 'entertainment they had reason to expect. The Reverend gentleman took idvantage of the occasion and the audience to de liver a violent Abolition harangue, disgusting most and insulting many of his hearers, some of whom left the house. For months past Rev. Frank Moore has converted his pulpit into a political rostrum for the fulmination of Abolition heresies, and unqualified denunciation of all who did not fully square up to his standard of loyalty ; but his "farewell sermon" capped the climax of fanaticism, and those who had little faith in him as a sensible and consistent ehristian preacher before, have none at all now. His course while in this city was damaging to the cause of religion, and his ab sence, will be a relief to many members of the Lo. cust street congregation. If the people of any charge within the bounds of the Philadelphia con ference desire the services of a windy political 'Abolition preacher, of the Wendell Phillips stripe, we recommend them to make special application for Rev. Frank Moore, who is just the man for such a locality. ' COLD B&D.-00 Sunday night during the preva lence of the snow storm, an inebriated soldier was found lying on the pavement in Walnut street be low Fourth, in a perfectly stupid condition from the combined effects of whisky and frost. A "good Samaritan," on his way home from church, kindly raised the poor unfortunate, and, with the assist ance of two other gentlemen who promptly re sponded to his call, convoyed him to a neighboring tavern where he was taken in and cared for. A few hours longer exposure and be would have "slept the sleep that knows no waking," and been consigned to an obscure and nnhonored grave in the pauper cemetery. The man presented a gen teel appearance, but had only a few dollars of money in his possession—the last of his hard earned wages in the service of his country. Juvicsizx TEIMVES.—For some time past suspi cion has attached to several juvenile "knocks" in this city in connection with robberies committed in various localities. The police officers are now on their track with a fair prospect of spotting and capturing the whole party. The leader of the gang is a notoriously bad boy whose vicious propensi ties, unless soon effectually checked, will eventu ally bring him to the penitentiary. The system of petty robberies to which we allude has been car ried on successfully through a period of several consecutive months. some of the drafted men in Detroit bad to be taken to camp in chains.—Exchange paper. The marching of drafted men along the public streets, hobbled and hand-cuffed, is a degrading spectacle that may be witnessed almost daily in this city, and the clanking of their chains is music to the Abolitionists, who would rather see them upon the hands and feet of white men than upon negrods. The practice is a cruel and barbarous one and should be discontinued. Comannn.—Yesterday afternoon two sleighs, drawn by fast nags, collided at the corner of Third and Pine streets, upsetting one of the vehicles and spilling out its occupants, neither of whom were very seriously injured. The horse attempted to rim - away with the empty sleigh, but did not pro• coed far until his career was checked. Turning corners "on a swell" sometimes proves a dangerous experiment, as it came near doing in this instance. PENNSYLVANIA NEWX. MONTOUR COUNTY.*A meeting of the Democracy was held in this county a few evenings ago. Speeches were made and resolutions passed con damning. the frauds, abuses and other acts of des potism and misgovernment which seem to bold high carnival at Washington. The resolutions, which have the ring of the true metal, were passed by acclamation. WAYNE COMITY.—One day recently a lad named George Bunnell, residing near Boneadale, while at work drawing lumber from the river was.in stantly killed by a log rolling upon him. FOUND in run Etym.—The Sunbury American says a newly, born female child, with a cord around its neck, was found in the river about a mile n bove Georgetown, Northumberland county. The sup position is that the child bad been strangled and then thrown into the river. Convieran.—ln the United States district court at Philadelphia, the trial of Hiram D. Van Vleit, indicted for fraudulently procuring from the post office at Easton, Pa., a letter from which- he em bezzled the valuable contents, was concluded a few 'days since by the conviction of the prisoner. He has not yet been sentenced. PENNSYLVANIA CANAL.—The Pennsylvania ca nal is undergoing repairs. Quite a string of work men are engaged in digging eat the bottom and filling up the towing path. An immense trade will be carried en on this canal the coming sea- SOD. - • WYommo CONFERENCE: The Wyoming Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church will bold its twelfth session at .Busquehanna, in this State, commencing on Wednesday the Bth of April. Bishop Janes, of New York, is to preside. About one hundred and fifty ministers are expected to be in attendance. Izminsirriao Dual. Oeuriest—At a recent term of the court of Montgomery county, in the case of Breitenbaugh vs. Bush,'.Tudge Chapman decided that the law staying civil process against soldiers was unconstitutional. The case was carried to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, and on Thursday law, at Philadelphia, an opinion was given rever sing the decision of the court of Montgomery county, thereby affirming the constitutionality .of the law. The stay law was (Muted On the /Bth day of April, 1861, A PIENNSYLVANIAII Suor.—The Indiana Messen ger gives an account of the tragic end of a young man named Longby, formerly a resident of that county. ""He went to reside in Tennessee a few years ago. When this war broke out he was pressed into the rebel army. After some time, he with much difficulty made his escape to our lines, and wishing to have esti/faction for the injustice done him, enlisted in the Union army.
