happy to say, was duly appreciated.
MAYOR'S COURT.—The lock-up yesterday morn
contained but a single culprit arrested during
preceding twenty-four houri. Keziah Lowe,
poor, degraded female that resides in the rear
the Capitol, was found on Monday afternoon
1r rather suspicious circumstanees in Mt. gal
cemetery with a young man from Halifax.—
Alai policeman Putt arrested her and took hoe
the lock-up, but her partner escaped. In eon
'ration that Keziah had been before His Honor

IGIOUS REVIVALS.—SeveraI of the churches
city have been holding, during the winters
a successful revival of religion. The most
:essful of these is now in progress at the Fourth
et Bethel, under the supervision of their worthy
)r, Rev. A. X. Shoemaker. Since the corn
:cement of the revival, which occurred about
first of January, eighty persons have been
, erted, and between fifty and sixty have jOined
church. Of this number forty have been bap
in a pool specially erected for that purpose
the church. The revival is still successfully
on, and on Monday evening there were
persons at the mourner's bench seeking re-

;burg, on their way to Massachusetts to join
egiment for which they were enlisted. They
under the charge of an officer of their own

one of the hotels near the depot and took re.
dements. Quite a number of "American chi
of African descent" belonging to this city
their respects to the distinguished visitors,
. gave them a warm and hearty greeting. - We
rn that the effort making here to secure negro
;rafts is not meeting with that success our Abo
m friends desire, and the probabilities are that
whole thing will fizzle out. In Pittsburg the
tteet exertions are being made to raise a Teti
it of sable soldiers, but so far their efforts have
iy secured the paltry fourteen that passed
mgh this city on Monday evening. It is evi-
Illy the desire of the darkies to wait for the

Oun POLICE. FORM—Almost every exchange
paper of this State comes to us complaining of the
inefficiency of the police force of this city, in al
lowing persons passing through here on the dif.
ferent lines of railway to trust themselves to the
tender mercies of the persistent thieves who infest
our city. Some are so ungenerous as to charge
that our police are in league with the miscreants
and receive a share of the spoils. This impression
is altogether incorrect, as we have reason to be
lieve that the thieves who operate so successfully
here are entire strangers in our widet, coming and
going with almost every train, and entirely un
known to our policemen. The fact is, we have no
regular policemen, and the only persons who do
police duty-are the ward constables of the city.—
Of the six ward constables only three attend to
their legitimate business; the balance do not con
sider the office a paying one and are engaged in
other vocations. At the Pennsylvania railroad
depot we have a special officer, employed by the
company, but he does not extend his operations
further than where he is employed. If our City
Councils could be induced to employ and pay a
number of efficient policemen, we have no doubt
the thieving operations of the villians who ply their
business so successfully here could, to a conside
rable degree, be checked, and until they de so we
have little hope for the improvement so much de
sired. Almost night'y there aie cases of outrages
committed on oar most frequented thoroughfares,
and so long as we have no 'Pollee force we need
only look for these outrages to be increased in
stead of diminished. The extended territory of
our city is entirely too large for our ward consta
bles to attend to, and for the personal safety of our
citizens, and the numerous strangers . that visit our
city, it is a duty no longer to be delayed by the
City Council of appointing a sufficient force for
our protection.
Amman VERSIM—In our notice, yesterday, of
the person accused of shirking duty at the battle
of Fredericksburg, it appears there are two sides
to the story. In our version of the affair we only
gave what some of the officers of the regiment
averred were the facts, but we have since learned
that what we stated was not strictly founded on
fact. The person in quegtion alleges that he was
honorably wounded,. and can bring proof of that
fact, which at this time we have no desire to deny
We sincerely hope that the foul accusation against
him can be clearly established to be a falsehood,
as no honorable man could rest under it and claim
the sympathy of the public. The person to whom
we refer has always hid an excellent character in
this community, and it is due to him that be should
clear himself from the foul imputations which have
been brought against bins.

Dear Sir —I would state that I was induced to use
DRANDRETH'S PILLS through the recommendation of
John R. Swift, bf Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and he
tried everything, but was not relieved. Finally, he took
one Brandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with occasional doses of six. In one
month he was able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
WESTCHESTER COUNTY, as.
Edward Purdy, being duly sworn, says that he resides
in the town of New Castle ; that some years ago be was
very sick with a sore on his leg, which had been run
ning for over five years; that he was also much dis
tressed by a pain in his eheat,aa i,baaidea, was very cos
tive and dyspeptic; that after Tying various remedies
and many physicians, he commenced using Brandreth's
Pills, six to eight three times a week, and at the end of
one month the sore in his leg healed, and at the end of
two months he was entirely mated of costiveness, dys
pepsia and pain, and has remained welt ever since.
EDWARD PURDY,
Sworn to before me, this 18th day of October, 1862.

- PURIFY TEE BLOOD.—Not a few of
-L the worst disorders that afflict mankind arise from
the corruption that accumulates in the blood. Of all
the discoveries that have been made to purge it out,
none have been found whi ch could equal in effect AYER'S
COMPOUND EXTRACT OF SARSAPARILLA. It cleanses and.
renovates the blood, instills the vigor of health into
the system and purges out the humors which make dis
ease: It stimulates the healthy functions of the body
and expels the disorders that grow and rankle in the
blood. Its extraordinary virtues are not yet widely
known, but when they are it will no longer be a ques
tion what remedy to employ in the great variety of
afflicting diseases that require an alterative remedy.—
Such a remedy, that could be relied on, has long been
sought for, and now, for the first time, the public have
one on which they can depend. Onr space here does not
adwit certificates to show its effects. But the trial of a
single bottle will show to the sick that it has virtues
surpassing anything they have ever taken. Sufferers
from Scrofula, Scrofulous Swellings and Sores, try it and
see the rapidity with which it cures. Skin Diseases,
Pimples, Pustules, Blotches, Eruptions, fro., are soon
cleaned out of the system.
Et. Anthony's Fire, Rose or Erysipelas,Tetter or Salt
Rheum, Scald Head Ringworm, §•c., should not be
borne while they can be so speedily mired by Arse's
SARSAPARILLA.
Syphilis or Venereal Disease is expelled from the sys
tem by the prolonged use of this SARSAPARILLA, and the
patient is left as healthy as if he had never had the
disease.
Female Diseases are caused by Scrofula In the blood,
and aregenerally soon cured by this EXTRACT or SARSA
PARILLA. Price $1 per bottle, or 6 bottles for $5.
For all the purposes of a family physic, take ATER'S
CATHARTIC PILLS, which are everywhere known to be
the best purgative thatis offered to the American people.
