has jolt been introduced in Tfarrbbnrg, and cre
ates quite a sensation in fashionable female circles.
The brilliant insects are poised among ilowere and
shalmi with every movement of the wearer's head.

sympathy in certain quarters for the State street
cypriana, Isabella Starry, whose conimitatent to
prison we announced yesterday, remained in that
institution but a tow how until she was liherated
OIL bail. •
Tas Nay Snwun.—The new sewer authorised
by Council to be constructed under the bed of the
camel at North street, and allotted to Mr. rreder
lek Trace, has not yet been commenced. The
work is required to be completed before the time
for resuming canal navigation, which is not far
distant.
Cor.. Gsouon B. Wnurronse, who returned from
the seat of war sick some two weeks ago, continues
so much indisposed as to be confined to his room
at the residence of his father, Mr. George P. Wiest
ling, in this city. The Colonel is a competent and
gallant teem and We hope•he may coon be re
stored to the command of his regiment. .
Airodtutt Ootrarisararr.-4 large number of
counterfeit five dollar notes on, the Bristol Bank of
Taunton, Mass., has lately been issued. One trans-
Ration is known to have occurred in New Jersey,
in Which two thousand dollars changed hands. No
doubt attempts will be made to "shove" the bogus
mousy in this city, and we cantion businees men
to lro on their guard.
CANAL 48Atibo8sittyr.—The Pennsylvania rail
road company give notice of their intention to
abandon so mach of the western division of the
canal (lately forming a part of the main line of the
public works) as • lies between Blairsville and
Johnstown, together with dams, feeders and reser
voirs lying west of Johnstown used in connection
with what is known as the upper western division
of the canal
BAPTIEM ai 111.1117BRSION.—At the Fourth Street
Bethel on Tuesday evening some fifteen persons,
recently converted, were baptized by immersion
in the church pool constructed for that purpose.
The solemn scene was witnessed by a Very large
congregation, the church being Crowded to its ut
most oapatity. The protracted revival effort has
been attended with the most gratifying success,
largely increasing the church membership:
-Tint 'lonize° Cnor.:—This crop which is largely
on the increase in Lancaster county, is beginning
to arrive freely in that city. The high price which
tobacco brings this year, has made the crop a very
profitable one. In some sections of Lanbaster and
York Counties a perfect tobacco raising mania line
been developed which, if not stopped, promises to
rival the 41 multicanlde fever" which prevailed so
extensively over the country a few years ago.
POCKET PICKBP.--On Tuesday evening M?:
Washington Alberti, of Middletown, was robbed
of a pocketbook containing forty-five dollars. He
is of opinion that the operation was performed in
Shaffer's *eon on Third street, by a soldier who
made himself somewhat familiar. The suspected
individual, a member of one of the provost guard
companies, was arrested by officer Campbell yes
terday afternoon. A hearing of the case will take
place before the Mayor this morning.
. A SHARP Firrancran.—One Charles Burg, late a
second lieutenant in the Nineteenth United States
infantry, was arrested here yesterday charged with
having drawn pay from ten different paymasters
for the same period of service—a decidedly sharp
transaction. He went to Washington this morning
in custody of Capt. Wellington Jones, who has
orders to pat him in charge of the commander of
the Old Capitol prison. Barg was discharged from
the service some time ago.
Pusamsnc.—A Mal of pugilistic skill took
place yesterday afternoon at the corner of South
and Front streets between a soldier and a negro.
After several rounds Sands) went down and begged
foi quarters. His face was badly cut and smeared
with blood. How the quarrel originated we did
not learn, but it caused quite a sensation in the
neighborhood. None of the official "stars" were
about, and consequently the belligerents escaped
arrest. The soldier seemed to be drunk, and his
sable antagonist was in the same condition.
Nannow ESCAPE.—Yesterday we noticed ano
ther illustration of the dangers attending the prac
tice so extensively indulged in by our juveniles of
jumping on and ormoving railroad trains. -At
North street a small lad named Necking leaped
from a freight train while it was in rapid motion,
severely spraining his uncle and narrowly escaping
instant death. His injury was of such a nature
that he bad to be carried home. Notwithstanding
repeated warnings boys continue to Indulge in this
perilous amusement, and probably will do so until
some of them shall have been permanently crippled
or killed.
LOST HIS Mourn—Another soldier was victim
ised in the vicinity of the depot last night. He
got drunk and fell among thieve s who stole his
pocket book, containing a large roll of greenbacks,
recently paid him for services in his country's
cause. The fellows who make a regular business
of plundering soldiers belong to this city, and the
fact that they do so with entire impunity, is by no
means creditable to our police officers. No one
doubts that with an intelligent exercise of the
tact and skill which every police officer should
possess who pretends to play "detective," these
thieves could be "spotted" and brought to justice.
Ovn CITY Scnoox Housas.—lt is greatly to be
regtottod, that the. military authorities. cannot be
persuaded to c6nsolidate the hospitals which now
occupy oar school houses, some of whose inmates,
it is well known, occupy quarters not contemplated
in any hospital regulations heretofore promnlga.
ted. The reduction of the number of hospitals
would reduce the number of physicians and at
tendants, and save as much in manual labor in the
printing of money to pay them as even in there
days of fast presses might be an object to the trea
sury. The people in the most thickly inhabited
portion of the Northern school district are com
pelled, owing to the occupancy of the Walnut
Street Laneasterian school house for hospital put
pesos, to send their children into temporary rooms
not fit, some of them, for occupancy. In one, it is
well known, the teacher within a few days has
been compelled to dismiss his school, because' the
floor of the room aistigned to him had about half
an inch of water upon it. The Southern school
district is also deranged in its operations by the
occupancy of part of its school accommodations
for the like purposes. This °mud just at the sea
son of tie year-when the greatest care is requisite
to preserve the health of the darling little fellows
who are to form the future of our country—either
as citizens or soldiers--4not to mention doctors.
Is this fair ? Certainly it is not—toward the tax
payers of the city who so cheerfully contribute to
the school fund which provides that or.n shall be
educated; who have so liberally °tooted commo
dious halls that no accessory need be wanting to
Garry out the benificent laws; who supposed in
their innocence that they would not be subject to
draft, but who find that they have been drafted;
and, if their boards of directors will look into it,
will find that they are unnecessarily occupied,
need sometimes in a way not laid down in the deo
alogue; and that the goveniment, with its land
above the city, and its young army of do nothings
about town, might afford to opnetruot hospitals of
its own, away from the temptations which sur
round convalescent soldiers in grog shops and ,
other place's not fit to write about. Oar school
directors are good cltisens, eompetont, men, and the
hope is expressed that they will not find it beyond
the sphere of their duties to the comaiunity to give
this subject a complete winnowing.

Tun ILlenatons AND CONSCRIPTION.—The new
conscription bill proposes in two drafts to take the .
able-bodied men between twenty and forty-five
years old. They are to be two classes--first, those
married between twenty and thirty-five, with the
unmarried between twenty and forty-five—second,
the Marled between thirty-five and forty-five—but
the second class is not to be called out till the first
is exhausted. This sets the bachelors between
thirty-five and forty-live all ago for getting mar
ried. We agree with a contemporary that this is a
wise provision of the law, if there -id any wisdom
in it. We wish it had taken all the bachelors
between twenty and ninety, before it touches
married men. What are these old bachelors good
for bat to die for their• country t If they will not
raise soldiers to fight battles, let theni go and fight
themselves; and die, if so be, without wife or child
to mourn them when they fall. However, if any
of those who would fall into the second class if
married, will repent of their singularity, the war
has already made widows enough who will not re
fuse to assist them in shirking the cartridge box,
if they will only buckle on the harness pf matri
mony. Let them walk up and show themselves
men at once. Fight or marry l Take your choice
quick !
DESERVED PBOMOTION.—Among the meritorious
promotions by the" War Department we find the
following : "Second Lieut. George W. Crabb,
Fifth regiment of artillery, to be First Lieutenant
by brevet, May 4, 1862, and to be Captain by bre
vet, Tuly 1, 1862, for distinguished services at the
siege of Yorktown, and at the battles of Malvern
Hill and Garnett's . Farm." The young gentle
man thus honored is a son of George W. Crab)),
Esq., of this city. At the time he entered the
service it was predicted by those who knew
hini intimately that he would make his mark,
and acquit himself in such a. way as to win higher
honors, and the gallant Lieutenant's career has
fully justified the expectations of his friends.
A GOOD OnnuL—An order has just been issued
by Captain Dodge, Which will be found in our ad
vertising columns, requiring all officers and sol
diers now absent from their regiments with
out proper authority to report in person to the
nearest reuniting officer within five.days, for con
duct to their regiments. All who fail to do so will
be regarded and treated as deserters. This order
applies to all stragglers from the army, whether
paroled, exchanged or otherwise. There will be
fewer shoulder straps visible on the streets and in
the drinking saloons of this city hereafter. It is
Said there are enough absentees and stragglers
from the various divisions to constitute a formida
ble army.
CommEnscas.—The East Baltimore Methodist
Conference met at York yesterday, and is attended
by about two hundied and fifty preachers. Bishop
Simpson presides over the deliberations of this
body. The Evangelical Association Conference is
also in session at York, attended by some forty
preachers. The Philadelphia Methodist Confer
ence, with which the churches of this city are con
nected, will meet at West Chester next week.
EMDEN Museum—Last week an appraisement
was made of the effects of an estate in Derry town
ship, and the sum of two thousand five hundred
dollars in gold and silver found in various parts
of the bonze where it had been secreted. Now
that gold is worth seventy cents premium, this
amount will run up considerably. No doubt in
the same way there are large amounts of the pre
cious metals stored away .threnghout the country.
BELLING OFF SELLING OPE! THE wrtorm S.Tocir
or DRY GOODS !—Having bought the entire stock
of dry goods of J. A. Boger, Esq., we will com
mence to sell off those goods at Mr. Boger's store,
at prieces less than can be boughl for again in the
city. And as all kinds of dry goods are advancing
every day in the city, this will be a good opportu
nity for those who are in want of any kind of
goods. The stock consists in part of
10,000 yards of Calicos.
15,000 " Muslin.
3,500 " Ginghame.

DERS: A safe, sure and speedy cure for Coughs, Colds,
Distemper, Heaves, Hide Bound, Worms,-Bots, Loss of
Appetite, Scurvy, &c., &C., in Horses and Cattle. Many
animals whose worn-out and . miserable appearance
makes.them almost worthless, can be restored to their
former vigor and fine condition by a few doses of these
invaluable powders. They are perfectly harmless, and
can be. given to asorind horse as well as a sick one, with
sure benefit—they keep their blood cool, skin and bow
els loose, urinary organs in good order, 'and, on the
