THE CIIRCIILIO Quasnow.—ln the Horticultu
rist for the present month, says the Germantown
Telegraph, we find the first portion of a very
sensible and interesting article on " The Cur
culio," by Dr. J. P. Trimble, of Newark, New
Jersey. The part printed is, to our view an
emphatic settler cf the question, and we com
mend it to the " Curoulio Philosophers" gen
erally. We have room, only, for a few brief
extracts:
I have had a long _ war with the curculio. I
have battled with him through fifteen cam
paigns, and, except the first three, when I re
lied upon the weapons of quackery, have al
ways conquered. I have used the various
washes and fumigations of horrible odors. I
have built fortifications of cotton and tar, and
troughs filled with oil, round the bodies of the
trees- I have placed whole loads of offensive
manures under favorite fruits, and on one oc
casion bored holes in the bodies of trees and
plugged in charges of sulphur. But since
those three years I have resorted to the jarring
process systematically, and have found it a
perfect remedy. My fruit crops since have
never failed; even the apricot and nectarine
trees never losing any portions of their crops
from this cause, and frequently overloaded.
The black knot, that disfigures the plum or
chards in so many parts of the country, and
finally destroying so many trees, is also caused
by the curculio.
The rot, that carries off in a few days so
many kinds . of plums just before they ripen,
and when we think the crop secure, is also
caused by the same enemy.
In France, parts of Italy, in Persia, and In
dependent Tartary, they have apricots as we
have peaches in our Middle Slates. In the
more mountainous parts of these countries,
where they have the extremes of heat and cold,
they flourish best ; in this country the cultiva
tion of this delicious fruit has not been under
stood. We have supposed. it could only be
grown under glass, or as a wall-fruit; it will
flourish high up in mountain regions, and the
less early spring weather the better.
In parts of Germany, plum trees line every
road, and the fruit is so abundant that they can
send dried plums or prunes tone so cheap, that
the beautiful boxes they are packed in are worth
nearly the cost. In those countries they hat e
no curculio. We have the same kinds of fruit
trees, as favorable climate, and soil as good
but a large portion of our population, in a ma
jority of seasons, have but little fruit of any
kind, and but few ever see an apricot. Now
the question arises, What can be done? We
may hope for the discovery of some cheap and
effectual remedy. We may hope also for some
cure for consumption or cancer, and we have
no right to suppose that we shall always hope
in vain; but we are obliged to say that such
cures are not now known. Ido not wish to dis
courage others from experimenting with the
various - remedies so boldly recommended, but
merely to say, that my experience has been so
unfavorable, that I have no confidence in any
of them. Suppose you discover a fumigation
so disagreeable that it would drive the curcu
lio from your trees ; it would not kill them,
and back they would come as soon as the smoke
had cleared away. And the ides of keeping up
that kind of a war for six weeks is absurd.
About the same may he said of the various
washes that are to be thrown into the trees by
hand- engines or syringes. Tar upon the bodies
of your trees would prevent them creeping up
for a day or two until it became glazed, but they
are already in the trees, and seldom creep ei
ther down or up. And they can fly, and pass
from one orchard to another. No. The cur
culio attacks our fruits with but one object—to
perpetuate its race. The young fruit is its
proper nidus, and if you drive it from one tree
it will find another. Each female curculio has
several hundred eggs to dispose of, and if she
can, will take as many hundred young plums
for their portions ; and I think I see her laugh
ing in her sleeve at the idea of disagreeable
odors stopping her in the performance of that
duty.
The writer justly adds that the business of
securing fruit from the attacks of the curculio,
should be simply a matter of calculation. If
it will "pay," go-ahead. Nine out of every
ten persons will have their patience exhausted
in their battles with this insect, and will aban
don the conflict in disgust, never perhaps to
renew it. This is wise, especially as we can
not discover wherein lies the immense merit
of the plum family as to require such extraor
dinary efforts to secure it.
THE POTATO DISEASE-A Possible Remedy.—
An anonymous subscriber, says the German
town Telegrayb, asks us to print the following
article from the Christian Advocate and Journal.
As it relates to a matter of much concern to the
cultivators of potatoes, and may lead to impor
tant results, we freely comply with the request.
As it has long been a favorite practice with
many of our best potato raisers to cut the seed
and spread them in the sun for from one to two
weeks before planting, the statement which
follows, looks very much like an elaboration of
the practice.
In the year 1855, Professor Holtman received
from a Colonel in the Russian army stationed
in Siberia, a sample of a new potato, with which
lie received two recommendations, namely,
"good in quality and a perfect hundred told
in produce." These potatoes were accidentally
placed on the back of a stove used for heating
the professor's study, where, by some mis
chance, they were forgotten till the planting
season arrived. When discovered, they were
shriveled so much that it was not thought that
they would grow. However they were planted,
and flourished to such a degree that the two
recommendations before mentioned were pro
nounced to be verified, and what was more re
markable still ; although all the potatoes in the
neighborhood and throughout the country were
more or less affected by disease, every potato
of the new kind was entirely free from disorder.
This induced Professor Holtman to adopt the
expedient of drying, and in consequence the
entire crop was submitted before planting time
to a high temperature, which had the effect of
charring some of the potatoes and shriveling
the rest. It was surmised at the time that some
of the charred potatoes were killed. They were
nevertheless planted at the proper season, and
the charred potatoes grew, and did quite as well
as those which were merely shriveled. It has
now been seven years since this first experi
ment, and we learn from our foreign exchanges
that it has been followed up every succeeding
year with great success.
In the year 1855, the pot ato disease prevailed
extensively through Russia, yet not one of the
professor's potatoes were affected. In 1856,
his crop exhibited the same freedom from dis
ease, when his neighbors were losingall theirs by
the rot. That year he began drying thos e pota
toes commonly raised, and most . frequentl y af
flicted with rot, still the results were the same as
when he planted his new variety. The diggiv a
time of 1857 produced to the doctor a splendid
crop of potatoes. Upward of three acres had
been planted with-those dried in a kiln, and of
the one thousand six hundred bushels dug
from these three acres not one diseased one
was discovered. In 1858, he erected a drying
house with heated floors on his estate, and we
learn that within the past two years similar
erections have taken place on the different es
tates of the principal landed proprietors of Rus
sia. Wherein lies the virtue of this drying
process? In all affected potatoes, even before
the disease is visible to the naked eye, there is
to be found a degree of moisture very far in
excess of that to be met with in sound pota
toes, and this water gradually increases in
amount, until the disease makes its appearance.
This shriveling process by drying up the water
is supposed to prevent the rot, which other
wise necessarily follows, and when applied to
potatoes already diseased arrests the progress
of the infection, and kills the disease, leaving a
portion of the potato sound enough to answer
for spring planting. We trust our agricultural
readers will not fail this spring of testing this
method fer preventing the potato disease.

the blood and soothes the nervous ir. itation, it aids the
organs of digestion to perform their functions, and re

so skillful'y comtined that while it exhila.ates it does
not provoke the lassitude which usually follows excite

PROF. WOOD'S RESTORATIVE CoRDIAL.—It is recorded
in toe Classics that Psyche was once sent to a climate
warmer than the West Indies, to procure a sample of the

senger returned, and as soon as the lid of the box
was removed, out flew all the ills that flesh is heir to.—
Fortunat. ly, hope was bound in the bottom of the box.
Prof. WOOD'S Restorative Cordial revives the recollec
tion of the awry, for it invigorates the blood, aids the
organs of digestion, imparts strength to the nervous sys
tem, ani fortifies the citadel of health, so as to bid de
fiance to the assaults of disease. It is a healthy tonic,
composed entirely of vegetable productions, and while
it is exhilarating as pure wine, no injwious results can
possibly follow its use. II is a desideratum in the medi

tend to remove idlimpuri ties of the blood, and eradicate
all traces of disease. It can be taken by the weakest

RELIEF AND HEALTH TO YOUR INFANTS.
We have put up and sold this article for over ten years,
and CAN SAY, IN CONFIDENCE AND TRUTH of it,
what we have never been able to say of any other medi
tine—NEVER HAS IT FAILED, IN A SINGLE IN
STANCE, TO EFFECT A CURE, when timely used
Never did we know an instance of dissatisfaction by any
one who used it. On the contrary, all are delighted wits
its operations, and speak in terms of commendation of
its magical effects and medical virtues. We speak in
this matter "WHAT WE DO KNOW," after ten years ,
experience, AND PLEDGE OUR REPUTATION FOR
THE FULFILLMENT OF WHAT WE HERE DE
CLARE. In almost every instance where the infant is
spllering from pain and exhaustion, relief will be found
in fifteen or twenty minutes after the syrup is adminis
tered.
This valuable preparation is the prescription of one o
the most EXPERIENCED and SKILLFUL NURSES in
New England, and has been used with NEVER NAIL
ING SUCCESS in
THOUSANDS OF CASES.
It not only r•olieves the child from pain, but invigo
rates the stomach and bowels, corrects acidity ? and
gives tone and energy to the whole system. It will al
most instantly relieve
GRIPING IN THE BOWELS, AND WIND COLIC,
and overcome convulsions, which, if not speedily reme
died, end in death. We believe it the BEST and SUREST
REMEDY IN THE WORLD, in all cases of DYSEN
TERY and DIARRHEA IN CHILDREN, whether it
arises from teething, or from any other cause. We would
say. to every mother a. ho has a child suffering from any
of the foregoing complaints—DO NOT LET YOUR PRE
JUDICES, NOR THE PREJUDICES OF OTHERS, stand
between you and your suffering child, and the relief that
will be SURE—yes, ABSOLUTELY SURE—to follow the
use of this medicine, i f timely used. Full directions for
using will accompany each bottle. None genuine unless

I beg leave to call the attention of the citizens of the
United States to the above WINES and LIQUORS, ha_

is familiar in every part of this country for the purity
of his celebrated BCH/EDAM SCHAPPS. Mr. WOLFE, in
his letter to me, speaking of the purity of big Wii;s3
and LIQUORS, says: "I will stake my reputation as a
man, my standing as a merchant of thirty years' resi
dence in the City of New York, that all the BRAND? and
WINES which I bottle are pure as imported, and of the
best quality, and can be relied upon by every purchaser."

Read the following from the New York Courier:
ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ON'S NSW YORK MERCHANT
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is
one place in our city where the physician, apothecary,
and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines
and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality,
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit UDOLPHO WOLFE's
extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of
Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1866; and ten
thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum,
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &c,,
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling.
Mr. WOLFE'S sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in
less than two years ne may be equally raiment with
his Brandies and Wines.
His business merits the patronage of every lover of
his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with WuxiVs mire WINES and
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. WOLFS, for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi
tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
