and Stripe?' are being flung in the breeze. Men
bare become belligerent, and fight after fight takes
plane nightly.

which arrived here on Tuesday night, are still lo
cated at Herr's Hotel and awaiting orders from the
Government.
Tug STARS AND Srnress.—The Star Spangled
Banner is now waving over many of our stores
and manufactories. The Union feeling predomi
nates, and patriots dare maintain it.
Fmarrs.—Several games of chance and the power
of the muscle were tried by the young men of our
town on Tuesday night. Cracked heads and dilap
idated pocket books will be the order of the day.
EN.roirtmo Tnumsar.vms.—The Reading Artille
rists, who arrived here on Tuesday evening, were
about and enjoyed themselves on the night of their
arrival. They behaved like gentlemen, and will
no doubt make good soldiers.
Ixraovasrears.—Mr. Burke is now engaged in
lowering the floors of his brick buildings in Third
street. Whittier has made the improvements, and
in a short time we may expect to see a row of law
offices on Third street.
Ta general of this division, R. C. Williams,
has appointed Cols. David J. Unger, Jos. Knipe
and Isaac 8. Waterbury, as his aids. They will
leave in a day or two. They are all old Mexican
soldiers, and good appointments.
TEE German adopted citizens of Harrisburg are
respectfully requested to meet at the Seven Stars
Hotel this evening at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of
giving an expression of their opinions upon the

BURMA. Our A Glinmar.—The ordinance of
:Be City Council was enforced yesterday in the case
cf Thomas Finley, whose chimney was on fire night
Before last. Hi was fined $5 and the costs of prose
cution. Oar citizens should be a little careful, and
encourage the chimney sweeps.
nn PAxvou Bovs.—A ball was given at the Ex
change on Tuesday evening last- It was largely
attended and everything passed off quietly until a
secessionist let loose his dogs of war, and prepared
to fight. "Secesh" was vanquished on the thresh
old and seceded.
THE STARS AND &amts.—Within the past few
days a great number of national flags have been
ordered from the manufacturers in Philadelphia.
Several of our prominent merchants have ordered
flags of a large size, and in a few days they will
he floating from their business places.
Tug members of the Harrisburg Beneficial Soci
ety, desiring to attend the funeral of their late as

THE WAR SPlRlZ—Captain C. M. Donovan, for

member of the Legislature from Philadel
phia, has opened, at the State Huse, a muster roll
for the Constitutional Guards. The roll is being
rapidly filled up, and the Captain expects soon to
be on the march.
A Rzyn.ounerrost.—Yesterday was what might
, e called an ugly day—ushered in with a slight
sprinkling of snow, followed up by showers of rain,
and compelling a man to shiver and shake while
in search of items. Winter lingers in the lap of
?Arcing a little too losg, and - we would like the old
fellow to vamose the ranche as soon as possible.

Tan Cosi. CARTS—Despite of the ordinance of
the City Council, it appears that some of our cid
tens are disposed to fight against the laws. For a
long time past the people of our city have been in
'4 habit of dumping their coal on the sidewalks,
tr propelling their carts over the sidewalks. This
vas obnoxious to the people, who grunted and
growled; consequently, Mr. James M. Wheeler
was fined the sum of five dollars, lawful currency
" the United States, for violating the statute.
To PRODUCE CMG WAR AMONG RATS.—Take a
barrel with one head out, put in water of sufficient
depth to drown the rats. Fasten over the top
1 0me thin elastic covering—a drum-bead, or sheep
kin with the wool off will do. When they have
r 4 well baited, alit the cover transversely with a
%hi knife, so that the incision will meet in the
''-ntre. A brick should be set on its end in the
cater, or some solid substance of sufficient height
c; allow of one rat only to stand upon it. When
h!1 this is rightly prepared, the rats as they go en

POLICE MATTERS.—EIIen Ray volunteered her
services to take charge of the lock up on Tuesday
night. Ellen was accommodated and did enjoy
the hospitalities of the City Council; but as Ellen
was minus the small change, and could not pay a
fine, she was discharged.
John Demart, a volunteer, had been in search of
better times, and a place to make money. John
was was slightly inebriated, but on the promise
that he would reform be was discharged.
Charles Reinhart, dead broke and nary place to
stay, appeared before the Mayor, yesterday mor
ning, and was permitted to depart on the promise
of leaving the city.
A man by the name of Tom Cordon was arrested
on Tuesday night last, while attempting to break
into the office of the Telegraph. The man is evi
dently insane, for no man with souse would at
tempt to rob a printing office, and especially one
like the Telegraph. The Mayor sent him to jail
for five days, but we think be ought to have sent
him to the lunatic asylum.
Eby Byers was brought before the Mayor yes
terday morning, and fined the sum of $5 for dri
ving his coal cart over the pavement. The fine
was paid, and Mr. Byers seceded.
- Laura Naylor, a vagrant of the first water, but
at the present moment slightly decomposed, took
lodgings in the Exchange on Tuesday evening.—
After enjoying the hospitalities of the place, and
a piece of bread, she was permitted to depart.
John Blake thought that he had a right to tax
the citizens of this county with a night's lodging,
and, consequently, John engaged the hospitalities
of Dan Calendar, at the Hotel, in Walnut street,
and in the morning vamosed.
SHORT WORDS.—The most vigorous and expres
sive words in tire English language, says an ex
change, are of one syllable, and a large proportion
of them are of Danish, Saxon and Celtic origin.—
Our soft, long words are principally from the Greek
and Latin. That curtest and most sonorous of
negatives, No, is from the Saxon ; and so is its an
tithesis, Yes. Home, too, is Teutonic. The an
cient Northmen were shorn talkers, and managed
to condense a world of meaning into a single sylla
ble. Their words, like their blows, were emphatic;
and the deeper we go into the "well of English
undefiled," the more of them we find. The clear
est and best writers of our mother tongue used, and
still use, monosyllables as their most effective mis
siles in argument. Cobbett hurled them like stones
from a sling, and many a grandiloquent Goliah
went down before them. Of late years, since
"word-painting" came into fashion, and inflation
has been mistaken for eloquence, long compounds
have been in vogue, and the brief and pithy nouns
and verbs have been shoved aside to make room
for patchwork words, which the unclassical readers
who has never delved amtng Greek and Latin
roots, cannot understand without a dictionary.—
All this is in bad taste. Simplicity and clearness
are the sterling elements of a wholesome literature.
Men who write and speak for the purpose of in
structing and interesting the masses, should employ
language that needs no transalation to make it
comprehensible to the graduates of the people's
colleges—the common schools. It is a great mis
take to suppose that big words are necessary to
express big thoughts. The simpler the dress of a
grand idea the better. Let those who think other
wise read the Psalms, or the Book of Job, or the
Prophesies.
CHILDREN.-Our city is blest with a goodly pro
portion of these charming little specimens of hu
manity. In walking along the streets of a pleasant
day they are to be met with in any number—some
in the arms, or walking by the side of their nurses,
others drawn in tiny carriages—all of them with
bright faces and sparkling eyes under the genial
influence of the open air. We always feel willing
to turn aside and yield them the right of way.—
Surely a man cannot be right-minded who does
not feel refreshed and purified in the presence of
these wonderful little creatures.
A sphere of innocence surrounds them, to which
even a rugged heart cannot be insensible. A
child is truly "an angel in the house." When it
makes its mysterious advent in the world, it draws
around itself a cluster of affection from young and
old, from parents and brothers, and sisters and
servant& The influence for good which a child
exercises is incalculable. Truly may we exclaim,
in language of Holy Writ, "Lo, children are an
heritage of the Lord. As arrows are in the hands
of the mighty man, so are the children of the
youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver
full of them." Let those who are impatient at the
noise and fretfulness of children—fathers especi
ally. for mothers seldom are—remember often to
recur to the 12th Psalm. Children confer fully as
much benefit as they receive, for we are - lold that
"they talk with the enemies at the gate"—thus
helping by their angelic innocence to repel our
spiritual foes.
TRIBUTE OF BOTEEM.—At a meeting of the Phy
sicians of the city of Harrisburg, held en Tuesday
afternoon, on motion of Dr. E. W. Roberts, Dr. W.
W. Rutherford was chosen President, and Dr. Win.
H. Egle, Secretary. The following preamble and
resolutions were unanimously adopted

Providence it has pleased him to remove from the
well-tired scenes of his earthly labors Dr. EDWARD
L. OATH, one endeared to this community by every
tie of humanity, by his deeds of philanthropy and
acts of kindness in the profession which he so no
bly adorned and honored ; therefore,
Resolved, That it is with emotions of the deepest
regret that we are called upon to mourn the loss of
one of the seniors in our profession ; and as an hum
ble testimonial to bis undying worth, we offer to
his bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy in this,
the dark hour of their affliction, and commend them
to the consolations of Rim " who tempers the wind
to the shorn lamb." -
Resolved, That as a further manifestation of our
respect and esteem for the departed we attend hie
ioneral in a body.
Resolved, That a copy of these proceedings be
communicated to the family of the deceased and
also furnished to the newspapers of the city for
publication.
THE MONEY MARKET.—The Philadelphia Ledger
says: The hearty energy with which the Admin
istration seems disposed to press the war, some of
our cotemporaries profess to think, will not be
likely to injure the trade and business of the large
cities, nor much, if any, impair credit. We con
fess we should like to see it so, but cannot. Theis
is too much reason to fear a weakening of all credit
and a steady sinking of all prices ; and especially
stock prices.

MORE TaooPs.--The Washington Artillery, nun -
baring 130 men, under the command of Captain
Ren, arrived in town last night, and put up at the
Exchange, in Walnut street. Captain M'Donald,
with his company of infantry, numbering 94 men,
from Schuylkill county, also arrived in the same
train. Other companies arrived,. the names of
which we could not ascertain.

flowers; Irish poplins, striped or flowered; foul
ards, which are to be much worn; brocade silks;
poplins, checked with white, maize or groseille;
moire antique, with embroidered flowers and gre
nadines, and wait de sole, with which they make

NOTICE.—The ordination exercises of the Rev.
W. S. Wood, pastor elect of the Baptist church of
this city, will take place this afternoon, in the
church, on Pine street, corner of Second. The
Council will meet at 2 o'clock p. m., and the ordi
nation services will commence at 71 o'clock in the
evening. The sermon on the occasion will he
preached by Rev. Prof. Curtis, of Lewisburg Uni
versity.
The exercises will be public, and a cordial invi
tation is hereby given to the clergy and all such
as may wish to attend.
To PREVENT TOOLS FROM RUSTlNG.—Thousands
of dollars are lost each year, by the rusting of
plows, hoes, shovels, &e. Some of this might be
prevented, by an application of lard and resin to
all steel or iron implements. Take three times as
much weight of lard as resin, and melt them to
gether. This can be applied with a brush, er cloth,
to all surfaces in danger of rusting, and they can
easily be kept bright. If:tools are to be laid away
for the winter, give Odes& coating of this, and
you will be well repaid_ It can be kept for a long
time, and should be always at hand ready for use.

deeds will shine as the stars of heaven.

The idea of representing the LORD'S PRAYER by an
engraving, and of ornamenting and arranging it in such
a manner as to produce at once a model of neatness and
taste, was conceived and carried out by GRAISitY, the
celebrated Bank-note Engraver of New York city. It
commences with exquisitely executed words of "OUR
FATHER," and then follow in succession the other parts
of the Prayer, every phrase of which is engraved in the
most elegant and tasteful manner. Near the bottom of
the picture last superbly executed head of OUR SAY lOU
and encircling the upper part of the engraving are ten
angel., each bearing one of the TEN coMMANDMENTS.
The engraving has received the most unqualified praise
from the religious community, as there is nothing of a
sectarian character about it, having been recommended
by clergymen of all denominations. As an ornament it
is one of the most splendid ever published in this country,
and is destined to take the place of a poorer class of
engravings. The size of the plate is 20x28 inches, and
is unquestionably the cheapest engraving ever offered in
this country.

—who that would receive the impressions which such a
