GENERAL NEWS.
TEM LONDON MITROPOLITAN POLICEL-At the
beginning of the present year the Metropolitan
Police force amounted to 6,617 in number-22
superintendents, 189 inspectors, 701 sergeants,
5,705 constables. The cost of this force for
the year 1860 was £491,426, a charge which
includes £39,602 to make good the deficiency
of the Superannuation Fund, on which there
were 1,699 pensioners, who received £52,215.
There is a remnant of the past in a charge of
£3,473 for retired allowances for persons for
merly belonging to the Bow street foot told
horse patrol and Thames police ; but that is
charged to the treasury. The sum of £317,389
was received by rates from the parishes in the
year, and $133,635 from the Imperial Treasury,
besides a considerable sum from the public
offices and establishments for the services of
the police in attendance upon them. The
salaries and expenses of the Metropolitan Po
lice Courts amount to £494,058.
A WIFE IN SEARCH OF HER HIISBAND.-411
the New York Supreme Court chambers; on
Wednesday, before Justice Clerke, Mrs. Sarah
Locke applied fin a writ of hebeas corpus, for
the purpose of obtaining possession of her
husband, who, she alleges, is kept from her by
his father. It appears that a year or more ago,
Charles E. Locke, who was on a visit to Eu
rope, became acquainted with the petitioner
at Birmingqam, England, and that he lived
with her there some time. They came to this
country in the latter part of 1860, and were
married in Brooklyn, on the Ist of January
last, by the Rev. Benjamin Whalen, a Baptist
minister. They lived together until the 9th of
February, when Mr. Locks suddenly disap
peared. His wife alleges that he is secreted
by his father, who intends to send him to Cal
ifornia. The wife is an intelligent, good-look
ing young woman.
THE CAPITAL or ELORlDA.—Tallahasse, Flor
ida, writes a correspondent of the Charleston
Courier, although " having a population of only
2,500, and destitute withal of commercial ad
vantages beyond its local trade, is nevertheless
one of the most refined and elegant cities of the
South. Here are gathered many retired busi
ness men, merchants and planters, bringing
with them all the wealth, luxury and taste of
many years' garnering up. Style predomi
nates to a great extent. Handsome equipages,
with liveried servants, and elegantly dressed
occupants, meet you at every turn, and you
wonder at seeing all this in the bosom of a
eonntry not yet developed, and scarcely known
to the world."
CHINESE SHEEP.—Among the cargo of the
New York Reamer Monticello, on her last trip
to Alexandria, Va., was a Shanghae ram, five
months old, consigned to Mr. Yeaton of this
city, for E. B. Duval, Esq., of Prince George's
county, Md. One buck and two ewes of this
breed, imported from China some time since
by Mr. W. H. Wisner, of New York, produced
in nine months of last year seventeen lambs—
not less than four, and sometimes five, at a
birth. The English stock-raisers,by crossing
this breed with the south-downs, ave increased
its size a full third, and improved the mutton.

Taottsta rx run entrnen.—The Washington
States alleges that there is trouble in the Bridge
Street Presbyterian Church, in consequence of
tne pastor, Rev. Mr. Boeock, having included
the President and Vice President of the South
ern Confederacy in his prayers for our own
Chief Magistrate. Some of his Congregation
thought there was no special need for him to
go out of his way to this extent, and the up
shot of the affair has been the acceptance by
the church of Mr. Bocock's resignation.
John Milton Earle, Indian. Commissioner,
states in his last report that the whole number
of Indians in Massachusetts is 1,61.0, there
being 775 males, 829 females, and 378 fami
lies. The number of those between the ages
of 5 and 21 is 732. The oldest person on the
list is Thomas Jones, one of the Christiantown
tribe' whose age is 83, and the oldest sysman is
Mehitable Ames, one of the Gay Head tribe,
who is 80 years old. •
CURING RANCID BUTTER. —A correspondent
of the Rural Register gives the following recipe
for curing rancid butter !—For 100 lbs, rancid
butter, take 2 lbs. fine white powdered sugar,
2 ounces saltpetre finely pulverized, and as
much fine dairy salt as you wish to add to the
butter to make it to your taste. The butter
has to be thoroughly washed in cold water be
fore working in the above ingredients. The
amount used should be in proportion to the
strongness of the butter.
The latest English papers state that the fol
lowing clause has been introduced into the

age, arising from seizure, detention or any
other hostile act of the Government or people
of any revolting or seceding State of the Union,
generally known as the United States."
The first of living gymnasts, Lestard, is now
performing in St. Petersburg, where he is
engaged for sixty representations, at 1,000
francs per night. The musical journals of
Paris are remarking, not without a touch of
bitterness, that the great tenor, 'Labial, at the
height of his fame, never received above 600
francs per night.
The rumor that Jenny Lind is going to re

Since the nightingale was first heard in En

and powerful as ever—so says the London
press.
John Drew is performing at the Lyceum

Form COITINS.—The body of the Duchess of

of solid mahogany and crimson velvet; the

its operations, and speak in terms of commendation of
its magical effects and medical virtues. We speak in
this matter " WHAT WE DO KNOW,” after ten yearsl
experience, AND PLEDGE OUR REPUTATION FOR
THE FULFILLMENT OF WHAT WE HERE DE

Grocers in Philadelphia.
GEORGE M. ASHTON,
No. 832 Market street, Philadelphia,
Sole Agent for Philadelphia.
Read the following from the New York Courier:
ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORK MERCHANT.—
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is
one place in our city where the physician, apothecary,
and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines
and Liquors, as prat as imported, and of the best quality,
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit lIDOLPRO WOLFE'S
extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of
Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1838 to 1556 and ten
Thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum,
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &c. ;
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling.
Mr. WOLFE'S sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in
less than two years he may be equally successf with
his Brandies and Wines.
. Bin briefness merits the patronage of every lover of
his spades. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their .orders direct
to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with Woutu , s cure WIRES and
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. Worms; for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi
tallow+, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
