ISIT BEST TO PLANT FRUIT TRIES IN THE
FALL on Seem ? We have received quite a
number of replies to the above question, a few
extracts from which will be interesting :
" Taking all things into consi, leration," says
E. P. Barnes, of Pharsalia, N. Y., " I think
fall planting the best. The planter then has
more time to prepare his land, and get it in
good condition for setting the trees. Fall
planting, too, gives the soil a chance to settle
around the roots, so that the trees are at home
and ready for growing, as soon as the warm
weather comes, in the spring."
A well known writer of Massachusetts takes
a different view of the matter. He prefers
spring planting.
Alter severing the trees in autumn from the
vital heat of the earth, they are exposed to the
severity of winter before having time to recover
it again by summer growth. To au extent, the
sip circulates in trees in the winter; and it
has been shown that the temperature of their
central wood never runs so high or- so low as
the sni s iounding air, but keeps nearly within
the range of 40 and 60 degrees Fah. Hence
trees, 'when planted in the fall—in latitude 42
and north of it—are more likely to be winter
killed than when planted in the spring, as they
are deprived of the warmth of their mother
earth. As a general rule, the spring is un
doubtedly the safest time to plant all trees ;
though some fruit trees will live in latitude 42
deg. when set in the fall, as every one well
knows. Apple trees are of this class. But
those trees whose wood is spongy and formed
rapidly, grow late, or have been much forced,
are unsafe planted in the autumn, as the vio
lence of transportation suddenly cuts them off
(as before hinted) from warmth, particularly
necessary for their preservation. Shearing a
lamb in December would not be so impolitic.—
reach and apricot trees very rarely live when
set in autumn; cherry trees may possibly, and
sometimes pear trees do tolerably well. But
since I have lost several valuable ones of the
latter, when thus planted, from one place to
another in my garden, I dare not venture only
on the poorest ; and then am careful to get up
as much soil with the roots as possible. Set in
the spring, I have never lost a tree of any kind,
except eight plum trees, bought at auction,
whose death I do not regret."
F. H. H. also prefers spring planting. He
says:
" In taking np a tree, the roots are more or
less mutilat ed , and the tree enfeebled; and
when- set out in the fall, less able to withstand
the rigors of winter, more liable to heave out
with the frost, and to be blown down by the
wind. It is sometimes said, by fall setting the
tree becomes more firm and the earth settled
about the roots, and consequently will start
earlier in the spring. But the same end may
be obtained by early spring planting, before
the heavy rains, or by watering at the time of
planting."
W. Alexander, of Michigan, prefers to plant
in the fall. especially when the trees have to
be obtained from a distant nursery.
C. G. Brown, of Wisconsin, also advocates
fall planting. Sometimes trees planted in the.
fall are injured by the "harder freezing of the
ground where it has been disturbed; but this
difficulty may be easily remedied by covering
the roots with a greater depth of earth than it
is intended shall remain upon them."- —a enesee
-Farmer.
How ro Rama CELZRY.-A description of
celery is unnecessary for most of those who
live in our near cities, where it has long been
a staple article for the table, but is as yet cul
tivated in comparatively few farmers' gardens.
It is a native of England, where it grows as a
rank, coarse weed, in marshy grounds. By
cultivation, the best stocks, which are edible,
have been rendered crisp and delicate, of a most
agreeable flavor, and equal or superior to any
other plant for salads. It is also used as
flavoring for soup and made dishes. When
once generally known, it will be considered as
indispensable in the garden -as lettuce or cab
bage._ It is usually eaten in fall and winter ;
by proper management it may be had from
August to April.
To raise celery for summer use, a hot bed is
needed, which should be prepared, in this lati
tude, as early as the second week in March.—
After the hot bed is made in the usual manner,
but with about twelve inches of soil upon the
manure, allow it to stand ten or twelve days
for the weeds to spring up, which can then be
destroyed, and the bed kept clean with little
trouble. Make drills six inches apart by press
ing the edge of a board into the soil an inch
deep, and sow the seed. The solid white va
riety is generally preferred. When the plants
are up, thin them to an inch apart. Air them
a short time each morning; keep them shaded
with mats on clear days from about 10 A. M.
to 4P. M. Water with cold water about twice
a week, applying it at, noon, and immediately
replace the mats. Hoe between the rows to
keep out weeds, only when the plants and soil
are dry ; otherwise they become rusted and are
spoiled for after culture. When about three
inches high, or near the first of May, they are
ready for transplanting. It is well to give more
air, to harden them oil; a few days before re
moving them.
Dig trenches one foot wide, two feet deep and
four to five feet apart. Put in six inches of
well rotted cattle or hog manure, fill in with six
ineheS of Roil, and mix the whole thoroughly.
Choose a clear day, water the beds freely an
hour or more before transplanting, that the
earth may adhere to the plants. Fork over
the prepared soil in the trenches, and leave the
middle rounded up higher than the sides.—
Put in the joung plants twelve inches apart,
and shade them for a few days to prevent wilt
ing.
Hoe them occasionally to keep out weeds, but
only in dry weather, and when the leaves are
free from dew, and always be careful to keep
all earth from the centre of the plant; otherwise
it will rust and be spoiled. Draw in earth
enough from the sides of the - trench to cover
the lateral roots three inches deep, but do not
draw together the heart of the plant while
young_ If drouth occur, frequent hoeing is
better than watering. When eight or ten
stalks are formed, and the tallest is eighteen
inches high, draw in earth from the sides, and
bank up the plant as high as the first outside
leaf—draw the stalks together, while doing
this, and be careful to keep earth out of the
centre. When the heart has grown up even
with the outside leaves, give a second earthing,
drawing it up so that the bank stands about
two feet high. As soon as the heart reaches to
the outer leaves again, the celery is ready for
use. It will attain this point about thirty days
after the first baki ng .
For fall and winter celery, choose a rich,
sandy loam, and enrich it with plenty of good
manure, thoroughly worked into the soil. Sow
the seed in drills a foot apart, the same as di
rected above. Thin them to about half an inch
apart. Hoe frequently to keep d own wee d s
and supply moisture, but never while the dew
is on. The plants will be - ready f or the
trenches about the first of July, after which
the treatment is the same as described above.
Further directions for digging, preparin g f or
the table, preserving for winter, eto., will be
given at the appropriate season. Many of
these hints are derived from a treatise by Mr.
Itoessle, probably the must successful cultiva
tor of celery in this country.

RELIEF AND HEALTH TO YOUR INFANTS.
We have put up and sold this article for over ten years,
and CAN SAY, IN CONFIDENCE AND TRUTH of it,
what we have never been able to say of any other medi
cine—NEVER HAS IT FAILED, IN A SINGLE IN
STANCE, TO EFFECT A CURE, whin timely used
Never did we know an instance of dissatisfaction by: any
one who used it. On the contrary, all are delighted wit h
its operations, and speak in terms of commendation of
its magical effects and medical virtues. We speak in
this matter " WHAT WE DO KNOW," after ten years'
experience, AND PLEDGE OUR REPUTATION FOR
THE FULFILLMENT OF WHAT WE HERE DE
CLARE. In almost every instance where the infant is
suffering from pain and exhaustion, relief will be found
in fifteen or twenty minutes after the syrup is adminis
tered.
This valuable preparation is the prescription of one o
the most EXPERIENCED and SKILLFUL NURSES in
New England, and has been used with NEVER FAIL
ING SUCCESS in
THOUSANDS OF CASES.
It not only r,3lleves the child from pain, but invigo
rates 'the stomach and bowels, corrects acidity, and
gives tone and energy to the whole system. It will al
most instantly relieve
GRIPING IN THE BOWELS, AND WIND COLIC,
and overcome convulsions, which, if not speedily reme
died, end in death. We believe it the BEST and SUREST
REMEDY IN THE WORLD, in all cases of DYSEN
TERY and DIARRHCSA. IN CHILDREN, whether it
arises from teething, or from any other cause. We would
say to every mother who has a child suffering from any
of the foregoing complaints—DO NOT LET YOUR PRE
JUDICES, NOR THE PREJUDICES OF OTHERS, stand
between you and your suffering child, and the relief that
will be SURE—yes, ABSOLUTELY SURE—to follow the
use of this medicine, if timely used. Full directions for
using will accompany each bottle. None genuine unless

GEORGE H. ASHTON,
No. 832 Market street, Philadelphia,
Sole Agent hiladelphia.
Read the following from the New Yo rk Courier :
tilonions BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORII MERCHANT,—
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is
one place in our city where the physician, apothecary,
and count.y merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines
and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality.
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re.
pay any stranger or citizen to visit Onor.riro WOLFE'S
extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos 17, 19 and 21. Marketdeld street. His stock of
schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1856; and ten
thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Bum,
some very old and equal to anyin this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, Jte,
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling.
Mr. Wm.'s% 'a sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in
less than two years 'ha may be equally successf with
his Brandies and Wines.
. .
His business merits the patronage of every lover of
his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with WoLvit's nure Wliiiis and
Litmus.
We understand Mr. WOLF; for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but tad
tations; ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
