GENERAL NEWS.
A SUDDEN DEATH.—Mrs. Nails, wife of Mr.
E. B. Nails, residing at Buckland, Va., died
very suddenly on the . 4th inst. It appears she
was in her usual health, eat her dinner, and
gave no evidence of indisposition, until about
half-past four, when she complained of a pain
in her arm, which very soon become useless ;
the pain extended to her breast as she was
walking the floor; she immediately took a seat
in a chair, and in a few minutes was a corpse.
HEALTH OF M. FOREEST.—Mr. Edwin For
rest has been obliged* to suspend his engage
ment at tiblo's Garden, New York, in conse
quence of a severe attack of rheumatic gout.—
There are still some fifteen performances to
make up the hundred nights, for which he has
contracted; and his friends say that when his
obligations in that respect are discharged, it is
the intention of the great tragedian to retire
from the stage forever.
SAILED FOR EIIROPE.—Ex-President Mira
mon, of Mexico, with his wife, two children
and servants, are passengers on board the
steamer City of Baltimore, which sailed from
New York on Saturday for Liverpool. He does
not mean to stop long in England, but will pro
ceed at once to Madrid, with a view, it is sup
posed, of Interesting the government in the des
perate fortunes of his fallen party.
At St. Louis, on Saturday afternoon, while a
man named John Sheehan was driving a wagon
load of lumber along the levee, the two horses
attached to the wagon suddenly took fright,
and-run down the levee and into the river—
horses, wagon and driver instantly disippear
'Mg from sight. Every effort was made to res
cue the unfortunate teamster, but to no pur
pose.
PEACE CONCLUDED.—lntelligence from Santa
Fe, New Mexico, states that a peace convention
had just been concluded between the United
States authorities and the Navajo Indians.—
The numerous and constant depredations of
this tribe have made them the term l ' of the
people of New Mexico. The strength of the
Navajoes is variously estimated at from ten to
fifteen thousand souls.
CONVICTED OF LA ATTEMPT TO CORRUPT.—
John M. Nelson, assistant district attorney of
Albany county, New York, has been convicted
by the Assembly, after seven hours' trial, of
attempting to corrupt, by improper influences,
Jay Gibbons, lately expelled from that body
for the corresponding offense. Mr. N., however,
disappeared before his conviction.
JOHN AtORRISSEY NOT DEAD.—It was cur
rently reported in New York on Saturday
afternoon that John Morrissy, the pugilist, was
dead, his decease being the result of putrid sore
throat. The announcement was premature, as
he was still alive on Sunday evening, although
suffering severely from diptheria. His recov
ery is said to be doubtful
The finances of Connecticut are in a most
healthy condition. The State is out of debt,
and has a surplus of $2.000 in the treasury,
besides half a million profitably invested in
bank stocks, applicable to the general purposes
of the treasury. She also has a school fund of
two millions in public stock and loan secured
by. mortgages.
supposed ghost at St. Louis tumbled head
foremost down some stairs where it was cutting
up some pranks, and produced very nuspiritual
racket and groans. The arlarming• apparition
turned out to be a young man, who had tangled
his feet in the white sheet wrapped around
him. He will not soon attempt such sport
again.
A law suit is now in course of trial in Cairo,
111., between the heirs of J. Berry, deceased,
plaintiffs, and M. M. Rawlings a al., defend
ants. The plaintiffs sue for the reeovery of
the real estate upon which a large portion of
Mound City is built. The result of this suit is
looked forward to with considerable anxiety
and interest.
TEE CABINET.—There are reports of contem- .
plated changes in the Cabinet. Mr. Chase,
Secretary of the Treasury, will, it is said, be
appointed a Supreme Court Judge; Mr. Came
ron will go into the Treasury Department, and
John Minor Botts, of Virginia will be ap
pointed Secretary of War in place of Mr.
Cameron.
Bristol Bill. alias William Warburton, was
again arrested in Providence, R, 1., on Sunday,
on a warrant charging him with entering the
house of John Greehle, and stealing $4O in sil
ver therefrom. About a year ago he was dis
charged from the Vermont State Prison, on ac
count of the bad state of his health.
One hundred years ago, when Linnaeus pub
lished the 12th edition of his Systema
8,000 animals were all that were known to him,
from all parts of the world. Professor Ages
siz added, last year alone, to his new Museum
of Comparative Zoology, 91,000 specimens rep
resenting 10,884 species.
COLORED JURYMAN.—The traverse jury em
panneled in the second session of the Supreme
Court of Boston, on Thursday, included a
colored man—W. S. Anderson. lie is said to
be the first of his race who has been placed in
the jury box in that city. He is a hairdresser
by trade.
MILITARY APPOINTMENT.—Mr. John A. Wil
cox, of Washington city, till lately in the office
of the Commissary General, 'was nominated by
the present Secretary of Wpr as second lieuten
ant first United States cavalry and duly con
firmed by the Senate during the special ses
sion.
AN AIILIABLE PECULIARITY.—The Cuban
women have a trait of character so noble that
Madame LeVert declared she could not refrain
from mentioning it : "They may never speak
ill of each other, but always find some pallia
tion for the errors of their own sex." This is
a good trait in the fair Havanese.
EXODUS OF THE COLORED POPULATION TO
easel:t.—The colored fugitives in Chicago,
alarmed at the recent slave arrest, are laming
for Canada in large numbers. The Michigan
Central train is said to be conveying away large
munbers.
ADVANCING IN Fentuirrs.—The New York
and Charleston steamship company have in
creased their tariff of freights fifty per cent.
until further notice, " in consequence of the
increased expense incurred in running the
ships."
William Mulligan has begun to show himself
again in the New York saloons. On Saturday,
in one of them, he opened his pent up wrath
against the o fficers of the State Prison, and
threatened to break the head of a policeman
and smash the jaw of the barkeeper.
The Mobile Tribune says it ins the best au
thority for stating that Northern skippers en
tering and leaving the port of Santiago, on the
• south side of Cuba, hoist the English flag as a
protection to their vessels and cargoes.

ald says that the wheat crop in Dorchester
county looks very prosperous, and the farmers
are busily, engaged in preparing their fields for
corn_
The Charleston, S. C., CM:Wan Advocate
advertises for "three young men, who are to b e

having but one purpose, to glorify God and
save souls."
A man named John Davis, charged with ob
taining money for subscriptions to the New
York /braid. and forging receipts for the same,
has been-arrested in New York. '
Three children died in great agony at Greens
burg, Mo., a few hours after eating some
poisonous roots which they had gathered.
The clipper ship Snow Squall, arrived at
New York last week. had a cargo of teas and
silks valued at $1,500,000.
The Postmaster General has finally decided
to retain thc present poatoffice site in New York
city.
The Legislature of Missouri has just passed
a bill instituting the death penalty for stealing
horses and slaves.

We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit lIDOLPRO WOLFE'S
