E AGRICULTURAL. PLANTING Tamts.—The .season for tree plant ing is now at limb and a few remarks upon that subject may be useful to those of our readers who have not had the benefit of expe rience in this matter. Selecting the Trees—Recently, at a meeting of fruit growers, a member remarked that when he went to a nursery to select trees, he took those that others rejected, preferring low branched plants, and those that had made but a moderate growth, to tall, bare stemmed, and luxuriant trees, as indicated by a, profusion of strong young shoots. In doing so, he was only acting in accordance with the dictates of .expe rience, and sooner or later, all who plant trees will arrive at the same conclusion. Especially might attention be directed to the propriety of selecting trees of moderate growth ; such trees will, if healthy, be found to possets a greater portion of fibrous roots, and conseque n tly su ff er less from removal. We know an experienced planter who always prefers yellowish and sickly looking evergreens when selecting a stock ; a tree of that kind is almost certain to improve by being removed, and commence a favorable growth at once. The growth of the branches afford a tolerable fair index to the manner of root growth; a short, stubby growth, indicates fibrous roots in abundance ; long, rampant shoots, are the growth of long, wiry roots. .Dieing up the Treea.—Every one of ordinary intelligence, must feel convinced that the more roots they can secure, the better. But there are many who are perfectly aware of this fact that seem to ignore it when they set about dig ging up a tree. Not a year goes round that we are not called to decide upon the propriety of sending trees back to the nursery from whence they came, owing to the extreme mutilation the roots have received in lifting. We would sooner trust to the tender mercies of a stump-pulling maehine, than to the assistants of some nursery men we know, in the matter of lifting trees for transplanting. We venture to say that one half of all the failures in tree planting, may be fairly blamed to want of careful lifting ; it, therefore, demands the serious attention of the purchaser that hie tree be properly lifted, and carefully transported. When trees are care fully packed for distant transportation, they rarely suffer; much more injury attends trees that-are removed even for a few miles, when the roots are perfectly exposed for hours to a dry ing sun and air ; they will suffer more in a journey of five miles, when thus exposed, than in a journey of five hundred miles if carefully packed. Preparing the holes.—This will depend some what upon the nature of the soil. If a clay subsoil, the hole should be made wide, rather than deep. Deep holes in undrained clays only form basins to hold water, and to prepare them for culture, draining and subsoiling are indispensable preliminaries. In gravelly, or Well drained soils, the holes should be dug out at least eighteen inches in depth, the top soil and subsoil thrown out at opposite sides, filling again with equal mixture of both, until proper height is galited for setting the plant. To place immediately around the roots, a prepared cora most of leaf mould, rotted manure and sandy soil, about a bushel to each tree, will form an admirable rooting medium- ' this should be well pulverized, and be rather dry than otherwise, 'when used. Setting the trees.—Deep planting and shallow planting, are the injurious extremes in setting trees: The simple and incontrovertible rule to ea the plant so that the point from whence the stem and roots proceed in opposite direc tions, will be about. an inch below the level of the surface of the ground_ The natural growth of the roots of different trees will form a guide to• their arrangement. The pine and fir tribes, and such evergreen shrubs as Rhododendrons and salmis, and such deciduous plants as the maple, magnolia, quince, Sze., root more on the surface thain the pear, oak, and hickory, 'and we are convinced that there is nothing to be gained by attempting to confine the roots of the latter to the same conditions as those natu rally assumed try the former. Pruning.—lt is next to impracticable, in re moving a tree, to secure the whole of the roots; the most careful lifting, indeed, only secures comparatively a small portion of those most es sential fibres that transmit nourishment to the plant. Some planters (or rather, we should say, some writers, as no experienced planter will so reason,) argue, that since roots are depend ent upon leaves for their formation, therefore, the more branches and leaves on the plant, the more likelihood of success. But such is the effect of evaporation by the leaves, that with out active roots they speedily extract all the sap in the plant, which, of course, as speedily dies. The branches must be reduced in a ratio corresponding with that of the deficiency of Boots, and, inasmuch as it is not possible to ascertain precisely the amount of the latter, it ie well to endeavor to give the roots the pre ponderance, by pruning the branches pretty severely. Staking —We prefer to reduce the top of the tree, so as to prevent any danger from sway ing, rather than be under the necessity of having recourse to stakes. Even with ever greens, we prune them in severely, not only on this account, but also to balance the roots, as stated in a previous paragraph. When some method of support is essentially necessary, wires attached to the tree, and secured to pegs drove in the ground, is a more effectual secu rity than upright stakes, which frequently chafe and injure the bark; of course, a small piece of cloth, leather, or something similar, should be inserted between the tree and the wire. Xulching.—Not the least important item in future treatment is that of mulching. To secure a continual supply of moisture around the roots, even during the dryest weather, is a great point towards success. This is accomplished by preparing will boles, and breaking up the soil to a good depth, so as to get a supply of moisture in it, and then, by mulching on the surface, it is retained for the benefit of the roots, instead of being lost though surface evapor4tion. A covering of any loose material effects this very desirable object, and in lieu of this, the surface of the ground should be kept loose and open; the loos/soil having its pores filled with air, be comes an interposing medium which protects the under stratum from the drying effects of arid breezes. We will close these brief remarks by obser ving, that nothing is gained by planting before the boil is in a fit condition. Let the ground be dry and mellow, even if it should be the middle of this month before it takes place; we refer to deciduous trees_ In the removal of evergreens, the middle of May is better than the middle of April ; and our greatest success for the-past six years in this locality, has been with evergreens set out the first week in June. Of five hundred evergreens of var i ous k i n d s, set out on one estate during the first eight days of June, 1858, we can still count four hundred and ninety-seven that have more than doubled their height since that time ; we allude to theie figures for the parpose of showing that our advice is founded on practice, rather than mere theoretical reasoning which is not alway s reliable.—Farmer and Gardener. PEARS ON Qouccu.—Pears grafted on Quince, require deep rich soil. Many failures have oc stirred, and much disappointment has been occasioned by planting dwarf pear trees, in the abeence of a proper knowledge as to the treat ment they demand. Pear culture on this system is not for those who plant' a . tree as they do a gate-post, and who look upon the after treatment of both in the same light, : leave them until they de cay, and then plant another, grumbling all the while about the absurdity of this mode of rai aingpdars_ When planting the trees, place some light soil around the roots tome them a start. Cover the whole of the 'Quince root and about an inch of the pear stern with soil. The quince Al throw out roots freely from any portion of the covered surfacce, if healthy; therefore deep planting, so long as the soil is in proper eon- ditien, is not in this *se injurious. ' If the roots are stumpy, and destitute of fibres, cut several upward slips on varigus parts of their surfaces, to encourage the emission of roots.— Farmer and Gardener. Business tuts. DE.N PIS TRY. ASHTON, No. 832 Market street, Philadelphia, Sole Agent for Philadelphia. Read the following from the New York Courier: ZEORKOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORK MERCHANT,— We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is one place in our city where the physician, apothecary. and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality. We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this merchant's extensive business, although it will well re. pay any stranger or citizen to visit linoteno Wotrs's extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street, and Nos 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1838 to 1838; and ten thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines. Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum, some very old and equal to any in this country. He also had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &c. in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling. , Mr. WOLFE'S sales of Schnapps, last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less than two years he may be equally successf with his Brandies and Wines. His business merits the patronage of every lover a' his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and. Liquors for medical use should.send their orders direct to Mr. WOLF; until every Apothecary in the land malt, up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from the.: shelves, and replace it with WoLva , s cure Wass and Liquous. We understand Mr. WOLtru, for the accommodation of small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases st Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchan t should be sustained against his tens of thousands of us. ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi tationa, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
