NIBCELLANY. TIIII INSURRECTION AT WARSAW.—From va rious correspondences in the late journals from Europe it appears that the demonstrations which took place on the 25th in Warsaw, Rus sian Poland, were limited to a procession, which would have had no importance but for a colli sion between the police and the crowd. On the following day CoL Trepow issued a police proclamation, which did not much tend to allay popular excitement. On the 27th a de-- taclunent of infantry, which had been brought in to secure order, was assailed with stones. and replied with bullets, killing six prominent citizens. In this manner, so far as can be gathered from the yet fragmentary -accounts, the sanguinary part of the events took place. On the 28th the people seized upon tie bodies of the citizens killed, paraded. them through the streets, and took them to the French consul ate. The French consul refused to appear, snd sent word that he could not take any part whatever in the manifestation which had been made_ The morns:Lent abstained from using the armed force, not feeling perhaps strong enough to meet the fury of the whole popula tion. On the Ist of. March the troops were consigned to their barracks, and the Governor rendered the town res ponsible for its tranquility. The people themselves kept order, and made preparations for the funeral ceremony of the victims. A letter of a later date, says : "The funeral has taken place without dis turbance; a cortege of more than 100,000 persons passed quietly in front of the Russian piequet, who presented arms. Public emotion has, happily, taken the direction of a legal manifestation. A petition to the Emperor is under Signature_ The initiative has been taken by men of the highest rank ; among them are three marshals of the nobility. The petition requests the re-establishment -of the constitution of 1815, which has been suspended far thirty years. The number of signatures is immense! A compromise may, therefore, be expected. Nevertheless, a great number of Polish officials have sent in their resignations. " The disturbances have produced a deep sensation at Berlin and throughout Germany. The government begins to understand that Poland is not dead, and that it is not so easy as they imagined to suppress patriotic sentiments in a nation of 15,000,000 souls, which, not speaking the language of their masters, and net professing the same religion, keeps its patriotism continually alive in the glorious reminescences of its independence and in its aspirations towards a future and liberty." PROPOSED RECOGNITION OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES.—In the Brirtish Parliament, on the 4th inst., Mr. Gregory gave notice that on an early day he would call the attention of her Majesty's government to the expediency of a prompt recognition of the Southern Confeder acy of America. Whatever may be the wishes of people on this side of the Atlantic, there is little doubt what will be the ultimate determination of the government of Great Britian on this subject. The Lone of the English press has been essen tially modified, in treating the question of slavery, since secession in the United States became a fixed fact. In their estimation, the institution of slavery seems to be far less obnoxious than formerly; less repugnant to humanity ; and to be tolerated as a necessary evil, rather than to be cut up with fire and word, regardless of all consequences. One might almost detect a growing fondness for the long abused slaveholders, who don't turn out to be such a barbarous set, after all. The truth is, England considers her commercial interests paramount to all others ; at least, they are of more importance than an. exploded dorms with which she has no possible concern; and if any substantial benefits can be obtained by currying favor with the Confederate States, she wilt not be slow to seek them. Now that she must contend with the Morrill Tariff, the motive for recognizing the independence of the seceded States, operates with a power prodigi ously increased. If the Republicans had de sired a recognition by foreign powers of the Southern Confederacy, they could not have done anything better calculated to secure this end, than was their adoption of a high protec tive Larilf.—Joornal of Commerce. How THE FRENCH DETECTIVES TEACH A Crawly:.—Nothing exceeds the ingenuity of the French police detective when in pursuit of a criminal. Science as well as cunning is ef ficiently brought to bear in his investigation, as* proof of which, the following may be ad dend": The footprint left on the soil by the fa etive from justice is worthy of preservation, and great care is necessary in the process for obtaining an accurate cast of it. The detective goes to work in the following wise A gridiron of several inches elevation is placed over the fautioriint, and covered with a sheet. of copper. fgeited coals nre then added, which heats the copper by conduction and the soil by radiation. Spermaceti, reduced into an impalpat le powder by means of solution in hot alchohol, being thrown into a large quantity of cold water, is winkled over the heated footprint. It melts on contact, and the sprinkling is continued sof the necessary thickness for a complete cost is reached. After cooling, the cast is carefully dug out. The size of the shoe, its peculiarities and imperfections, are thus accu rately obtained for comparison, when oppor- Wally shall offer. gEIWOOL REBIALION.—AI, Chicago last week, the board of education appointed a Mr. Spof- Sntd principal of one of the public schools, in place of a Mr: Benham, removed. On Thurs day, Mr.. Spofford was introduced to his charge by a. member of the board'of education, but the big boys would'nt stand him, and the big girls (styled "young ladies," in the report before ns) Mood by the boys, and joined them in hissing the pew master. The representative of the beard .attempted to explain to the rebels the crocermg wickedness of their behavior. This the boys could not be made to understand, and they began to make preparations for throwing the principal out of the window, but he armed himself with a pole, and with it kept them at bay-, until he found an opportunity to escape. On Friday the school house was not opened.— On Saturday it was re-opened, but the spirit of mutiny raged btill hotter, the building was Maned, and the police were summoned, and actual violence thereupon ceased. Paoli Guava TO GAY.—The custom of atten ding funerals for the purpose of getting a gra tuitous carriage ride, and for enjoying one's self in "a promiscuous manner generally," has become so annoying and scandalous in Cincin nati that several beneficial societies of that city have adopted resolutions not to attend fu nerals unless the number of "mourners" are restricted to the immediate family and friends of the decedent. Appended to a funeral invi tation which appeared in the Cincinnatipapers of Saturday was the following notice ; " The friends of the deceased will also take notice that. the Society will not attend if there be more than six carriages and hearse at the funeral.". FATAL ' AFFRAY IN TEXAB.—We learn that an affray occurred in Texans, Jackson county, on Wednesday, the 6th inst., between Mr. Wootfolk as one side, and Messrs. C. M. Flournoy and R. R. Flournoy on the other. Several ghats wean exchanged with effect, the first named genticeran being killed, and the elder Flournoy severely wounded. The Flournoys were ar jested, and upon examination before Judge Jesse& were admitted to bail in bonds of $5,000 aid $lO,OOO. This painful affair has created great. excitenumt in the country. The Grand inryau'lg in session at the time, a bill 'of issfietasost for murder was returned against the Flournoys.—N. 0. ASHTON, No. 832 Market street, Philadelphia, Solo Agent for Philadelphia. Bead the following from the New York Courier: ENORMoUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORK MERCHAN?..— We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is one place in our city where the physician, apothecary, and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality. We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this merchant's extensive business, although it will well re. pay any stranger or citizen to visit UDOLPHO WOLFR , S extensive warehouse, Nos.lB, 20 and 22, Beaver street, and Nos 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1856 ; and tea thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wine s , Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum, some very old and equal to any in this country. He also had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &0.. in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling: Mr. WOLFE'S .sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less than two years lie may be equally succeed with his Brandies and Wines. His business merits the patronage of every lover of his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their shelves, and replace it with WOLF lI'S yore WINES and LIQUORS. We understand Mr. Womfg, for the accommodation of small dealers in the country . , puts up assorted cases of Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant, should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op ponents in the :United States, who sell nothing but imi tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
