BEAUTY AND MANNERS AS ELEMENTS OF SUC
csss.—We make the following extracts from
an article on " Success" in the December num
ber of the Cornhill Magazine :
It has been said that "any man may have
any woman." The meaning of which I hold to
be, that the persevering pursuit of any object
must , eventually be s crowned with success.
Labor amnia viacit, as the copy-book text has
it, as the proverbs of well nigh every country
have it in other words. To set your minds
resolutely upon the accomplishment of any
purpose, is to go half way to its attainment.
Now, it commonly happens, to pursue the il
lustration wherewith I commenced this pas
sage, that they who are most successful with
Women are not the handsomest men. And the
reason of this is obvious. Handsome men rely
over much on their handsoments. To use a
metaphor, rather expressive than eloquent,
they expect that all the pretty women will
t.junip down their throats." But pretty women
will not jamedown their throats. This process
of deglutition is net affected by them. They
have no notion of being quietly absorbed. They
must be won—bravely, laboriously and with a
becoming sense of what is due to them. Are
we to thitik that we have only to sit quietly in
our easy chairs, to twirl our moustaches?
Beauty is a divine gift; let whosoever possesses
it be thankful, Madame de Stael, one of the
most gifted of mortals, said she would surren
der all that she possessed in exchange for it.
But Madame de Stael was a woman, and I am
now writing about men. Everybody knows
that men care more about personal beauty in
the other sex than women do, and for this rea
son, that pleasant sights and sweet sounds, and
everything soft and gentle is a delight and a
refreshment to them. But the ordinary envi
ronments of women are soft and gentle. They
lead comparatively passive lives, and that
which most fascinates them in the other sex is
a sense of active power. What is softness and
smoothness to them? Bless them, they like the
grit. Even the hard lines on a man's face—the
pallor, nay, the less interesting sallowness of
his cheek—are interesting to them if they de
note power. I repeat that personal beauty is
a great gift, even to a man. But it is only an
accompaniment to other gifts that it contributes
to success. Everybody knows what Wilkes,
the ugliest man in England, said to Townsend,
the handsomest. And it was not a mere idle
boast.
• Whether you govern best by &reserved, dig
nified demeanor, or by an open, cheery manner,
may be a question. Each has its advantage,
and each is very effective in its occasional de
viations into the system of the other. The ge
nialities of stern men, and the asperities of
genial ones, are each very impressive in their
way. Indeed, the question of manner in con
nection with my present topic of discourse, is
one of such high importance, that I cannot
summarily dismiss it. Ido not say that it is a
thing to be studied. To lay down any rules on
the subject is a vain thing. People who shape
their outward behavior with elaborate design
generally overreach themselves. Nothing but
a really natural manner is genuinely success
ful in the long run. Now, the natural manner
of some people is good—of others hopelessly
bad, though there may be little difference in the
geed beneath. It is hard that we should be
prejudiced by what is merely superficial—but
we are. I have heard it said that this is not
prejudice—for the manner is the outward and
visible sign of the man. But there are very
excellent people in the world with manners the
reverse of pleasant—people shy and reserved,
or biusqne and boorish, with whom personal
intercourse is by no means a delight.
Others, again, there are, with whom half an
hour's talk is like an invigorating bath of sun
shine. In this last there is an element of suc
cess. There is another successful manner, too
—one which impresses every one with a sense
of your power. If yon have both a manner at
once gracious and powerful, you have every
thing that you can wish as an outward aid to
success. A thoroughly good manner will often
do much to neutralize the ill effects of an un
prepossessing appearance. But an ill favored
countenance may be a stumbling block at the
outset that is never surmounted. It repels at
the first start. There are people described as
" nnrepresentable," who have giants to contend
against at their first start in life. When they
have once made their way in the world, the in
significance or grotesqueness of their appear
ance is a matter of no moment. Nay, indeed,
we may not unfairly assign some additional
credit to the man who has forced his way to
the front, in spite of all physical defects and
personal draw-backs. But it is an awful thing
for a young beginner to have to contend against
the impediments of a bad face, an insignificant
or an ungainly figure, and a bad manner in the
presence of others.
A SCENE IN AN ENGLISH TOWN COUNCIL.—
There is a delightful description in an English
paper of a scene that recently occurred in-the
Town Council Chamber of Hull, from which we
learn how close is the relationship between the
two great branches of the Anglo-Saxon family.
A squabble originated and culminated there
that might almost have transpired in the halls
of legislation in our own happy land. Captain
Walton add Lieut. Samuelson got into a very
excited state; talked of wringing each other's
noses, called each- other Jew-looking rascals,
and as we may say on this side of the water,
"the scene which followed baffles description."
Before either:party, o'r the spectators left the
room, one of them sent the other a challenge,
written in such horrid English as shocked the
recipient, who forthwith procured the public
reading of it.. Hisses greeted the document
from the floor of the Chamber and from the
galleries; after which one of the belligerents
rose and said the expression he had used was
in the heat of debate, and he begged to apolo
gize. His opponent accepted the apology, &c.,
&c., &c. If this agreeable little episode had
been the result of democratic institutions, that
is, if it had happened on the American side of
the Atlantic, we shou'd never have heard the last
of it from our British brethren. As it is, we
are amazed that in a country so blessed as to
have a monarchical form of Government, a land
where the refining influences of a landed aris
tocracy are felt, such a specimen of barbaric
manners could have been displayed. One might
almost as well live in the United States, if such
vulgarity is visible in a Council Chamber of a
town like Hull. But one touch of nature makes
all mankind a kin. Blood will tell; and the
English are our cousins.
TRADE IN FROGS AND SNAILS.—There are
one or two articles of commerce in Switzerland
which no Englisman or American ever thought
of " trading in ;" and yet which might be made
profitable, perhaps, for the marshes bring forth
as abundantly there as here. Catholics not
being allowed to eat meat on Fridays and va
rious other days in the year, and Catholics
being many in the land; all manner of fish are
in great•demand. Frogs and snails belong to
the genus fish, and ire collected in great num
bers for cloisters. It is not necessary to enjoin
the peasants to deny themselves meat, as they
seldom eat it except on Sundays. Snails are
fattened in gardens on certain kinds of leaves,
and one may bear the chattering of their teeth,
as they eat, in passing'by. _From Zurich they
are exported to Italy in the autumn. .11 is only
frog's legs that are daten, and _formerly they
used to catch them and - cut off their legs, lea
ving the animal to die a painful and cruel death.
In a period of four years the cloister Rheinau
disposed of 40,000 snails and 36,000 pairs of
frogs' legs.
Tn "GREAT SHOT AT.' =The Hon. Mr. Van
Wyok, M. C. of New York, has taken the
"stump" in Connecticut. This is the gentle
man that dispesed of three assassins near or
about Capitol Hill, Washington, one dark night:,
and was himself " terribly wounded," from the
effects of which, however, he recovered 'with
surprising rapidity.

ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORK MERCHANT.
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is
one place in our city where the physician, apothecary,
and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines
and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality.
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re.
pay any stranger or citizen to visit UDOLPHO Wotre's
extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos 17, 19 and 21, Illarketheld street. His stock of
schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1856; and ten
thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum,
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &c.
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling:
Mr. WoLFE's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hops in
less than two years ne may be equally succesef with
his Brandies and Nines.
His business merits the patronage of every lover of
his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with Womm'a pure Wrins and
LIQUORS.
