XI THE ADVERTISING ROOMS OF THE LONDON Trafts.--An interesting sketch is given by a correspondent concerning the advertising rooms of the great London " Thunderer :" Turn to the counter; there is a wide space beyond, and many clerks, writing, always writing. Four favored, or unfavored ones— we know not how to deem it—sit on thrones behind the counter, to take the tribute of the advertising suppliants; from these four we may choose our oracle and judge, but it matters little which we take. How very silent is the room I scarce any sound, but the clink of money and the low uttered fiats of these throned arbiters of advertisers' fates. Of no avail is remonstrance here; the ad vertisement has hardly reached their hands— scarcely has time elapsed to skim it over— before the quiet utterance of their judgment ; if one should venture to remonstrate at the charge, his lines are given back and the next comer served; no words—they have no time for words ; the first decision is the final one ; we mean, of course, in the busier portion of the day—from 11 o'clock till. 2. And how " use doth breed a habit in a man ;" the per emptory officers rarely or never err; seldom will the printed lines fail to bear out their charge; their practiced eye fathoms the mys teries of every conceivable chirography, and like seers of the mighty press, a field of the type rushes back on their sight, soon as their mild orb rests upon the scrawL And how the piles of advertisements grow by their side ! As they take them they give a printed acknowledgment to the advertiser, and he then beholds his composition impaled with others which have preceeded, upon a wire. As we look at the business of this office, we wonder where it is to end. Already, in the London season, when the towh is full, the Times issues, not unfrequently, ten pages of closely printed advertisements, of six columns each, and each column a long one. Yet there is always enough on hand for several days to come ; an advertiser cannot expect to see his lines in print for three days, sometimes a week, from the period that be gives it in. We ask ourselves why people will consent to wait so long ; why pamper still this overgrown favorite of fortune, paying duties to the Government, as it does, for advertisements and stamps and paper, alone amounting to $500,000 annually, beside giving a livelihood to so many, many families ? IRON SHIPS OF WAR.-Mr. Scott Russell has published a reply to Sir Howard Douglas's re cent pamphlet on the comparative value of iron and wooden ships of war. Sir Howard's opinion is " that ships formed wholly, or nearly so, of iron, are utterly unfit for all the purposes and contingencies of war, whether as fighting ships or as transports for troops." In opposi tion to this, Mr. Scott Russell submits :—l. That iron steamships-of-war may be built as strong as wooden ships of greater weight, and stronger than wooden ships of equal weight. 2. That iron ships of equal strength can go on less draught of water than wooden ships. 3. That they are more durable. 4. That they are safer against the sea. 5. That they are safer against fire. 6. That they are much safer against explosive shells. 7. That they are much safer against red-hot shot. 8. That they are much safer against molten metal. 9. That they can be made impregnable even against solid shot. The following resume of Mr. Scott Russell's pamphlet is taken from the Mechanic's Magazine: As Sir 11. Douglas had attacked the construc tion and sailing qualities of the Great Eastern, his opponent first disproves his assertions and predictions regarding her, and then states the facts regarding iron war ships which have been ascertained by actual experiment. Experience has proved, first, that "when the thickness of a vessel's side is not more than half an inch, shots fired obliquely have glanced off the iron vessel which would have penetrated a wooden ship; second, that shots fired directly have passed through both sides of the ship, doing has damage to the ship directly and less damage by splinters, than - would have been the case in timber ships ; third, that the shot toles have been as easily stopped, and more expeditiously and less expensively repaired than in wooden ships; fourth, that their plates of wrought iron, even five-eighths of an inch, are proof against shells ; that plates two inches thick are impenetrable, even to the pieces and fragments of shells; that iron plates four inches and a half thick are nearly impenetra ble to shot fired from the heaviest nature of guns; and finally, that plates six inches thick are practically impenetrable." THE Naw FRENCH CANNON.—The following are further particulars relative to the mortar cannon to which I alluded on the 21st ult : The tube or barrel is formed of several cylin ders or rings of cast or wrought iron, its longitudinal cylindrical parts affording the means of unitng the rings. The interior of the tube is rifled by means of a number of projecting spiral rods, shaped in triangular prisms. The tube can be lengthened at plea sure. The breech of the gun is a mortar, to Which the tube is attached, and from which it may be detached, either for the purpose of loading it at the breach or of making use of it as a mortar. It is alleged that this cannon cannot become heated, that the process of cleansing after each discharge is unnecessary, except as regards the breech, and that it may be fired four or five times during the space now required to fire any other gun once. Another consequence said to follow from the non-heating of the barrel of the gun is, that there is no danger of hurting, either from defect in the metal or from overcharge. The gun may otherwise be lengthened or shortened at plea sure. The inventor states that a gun throwing a shot of 120 lb. weight may be taken to pieces and e=yeyed on the back of a horse or mule over roads impassable for carriages. He shows that there is a considerable saving in the con struction of this gun in consequence of the tube being of open work, and of iron in place of bronze. It may be as light as is consistent with the resistance which its weight must necessarily oppose to the recoil produced by Its discharge. The inventor expects that this gun will supersede mortars, and that every cannon mounted on a ship's deck may be used both as a cannon and a mortar, and a ship that carries 40 guns may be said to carry 40 guns and 40 mortars.—Paris correspondence of the London .Thnes. SEALING THE FLOUR FOR THE FABSOFER.— The Baldwinsville (N. Y.) Gazette notices that 2,100 barrels of flour are being ground at a mill in that place for the Jews of New York, who will use it for making unleavened bread for the. Passover. An agent of those who or dared this flour is at the mill constantly, du ring the process of grinding, and seals each barrel with his private mark in wax. Spring wheat is used for making this flour. THE illt.rrenv Policy. or VIRGITNIA.—The armed and uniformed volunteer force of Vir ginia is stated to be 2,547 cavalry; 820 artillery; 5,530 light infantry; 1,650 riflemen, being 10,547 in all armed. The unarmed volunteers number 6,160_ There are 143,255 on the militia rolls of the State, but it is believed that there are really 200,000 subject to military duty. At a meeting of Republican candidates for the Cincinnati city offices, it was resolved that no applicant for a Federal appointment should be considered in the ring for a city office.— • Therefore the numberless Cincinnati gentlemen whose names are on file at Washington, who l ie bound to be disappointed, need not look for Sympathy at home. Bead the following from the New York Courier: ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORE MERCHANT. We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is one place in our city where the physician, apothecary, and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality, We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this merchant's extensive business, although it will well re pay any stranger or citizen to visit Coma's," Wo Le v e extensive warehouse , _ Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Bettver street, and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Markettield street. His stock of schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not lase been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1856; and tea thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines, Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Burs, some very old and equal to any in this country. He also had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, lec,. in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling: Mr. WOLFE'S sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less than two years ho may be equally successf with his Brandies and Wines. His business merits the patronage of every lover of his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct to Mr. WoLTE, until every Apothecary in the land make up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their shelves, and replace it with WoLen , a pure Wilms and LIQUORS. We understand Mr. WOLF; for the accommodation of small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant, should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
