    MISCELLANY
THE TEETH.—Natural teeth, clean, sound
and perfect, are essential to the comeliness of
any human face. Defective teeth mar the
handsomest features, and cause us to turn
away our gaze with a kind of disgust from a
countenance otherwise faultlessly beautiful.
Sound teeth not only add to the comfort and
personal appearance, but contribute largely to
health of all; hence special and scrupulous
attention should be paid to them daily, from
early childhood, from the time when the first
permanent tooth makes its appearance, about
the sixth year.
Whenever it is practicable, every toothin a
child's head should be minutely examined by a
careful, conscientious and skillful dentist
every few months ; and the great importance of
special attention to their cleanliness, the avoid
ance of cold and hot drinks, of the use of any
"picks" harder than wood or quills, and of all
dentifrices prepared by unknown hands, should
be impressed upon the minds of the young with
great assiduity.
Harm has been done by propagating the no
tion that sugar is injurious to the teeth, by di
terting attention from real causes of destruc
tion or decay. The eating of any amount of
pure sugar cannot injure the teeth directly, be
cause it has no residue ; it is wholly dissolved
and passes into the stomach.
Bat let it be remembered that the practice of
sating sugars or candies or any other sweet
meats largely will inevitably cause a disorder
of the stomach and generate gases there, which
will speedily undermine the health of the teeth.
By insisting too much on the fact that sugars
and candies destroy the teeth, an impression
wilt grow that if these are mainly avoided,
the person so doing will have good teeth; and
this leads the mind away from the necessity of
keeping the mouth clean and the stomach
healthful. If these things are well done, and
the teeth are kept plugged in a finished style,
teeth naturally or hereditarily "poor" may be
kept in a good state of preservation for many
years.
All forms of dyspepsia have a direct tendency
to destroy the teeth. Whatever causes acidity
of the stomach is ruinous to the teeth. A
tablespoon of the purest syrup of loaf-sugar,
taken three times a day before meals, will de
stroy the tone of the healthiest stomach in a
very short time. And when it is remembered
how many patent medicines are made up in the
form of syrups and sweet lozenges, and how
common the use of them has become, it need
not be wondered at, that every second or third
person met on the street knows the meaning of
"sour stomach," or dyspepsia. It has been
shown that if a sound tooth be steeped in syrup
for some days, it becomes a soft, pulpy mass.
That does not prove that syrup is injurious to
the teeth, because it was a dead tooth ; and
farther, such a steeping of a live tooth is im
possible, The gastric juice is innocuous to a
living stomach, but at the very moment of
death that same gastric juice begins to eat up ,
the stomach. So it is inconclusive to reason
from the living to the dead, or vice versa.
It is urged by , many that calomel is a most
deadly agent to the teeth, and yet if a sound
tooth is soaked for weeks together in a solution
of calomel, no apparent effect whatever is pro
duced on it.
So far from sugars and pure candies injuring
the teeth or the health, they would, if used
wisely and in moderation, as sole desserts, be
actual preservatives of both ; especially if alter
nated, as desserts, with fruits and berries in
their natural, raw, ripe, fresh, perfect state by
banishing from our tables the pestiferous pie,
the leaden pudding, and pastries and cakes of
every name, which, as desserts, always tempt
to excesses which lay the foundation for dis
eases which torture for a lifetime or bring
speedily to the grave.
Let the spirit of this article be distinctly
-andertood. Pure sugars and candies do not
injure the teeth, except inditectly, by their
injudicious use inciting acidity of stomach or
dyspepsia, as will any other of food, or drink,
or beverage, if extravagantly used.
At seasons of the year when fruits and ber
ries may not be had, ripe, fresh and perfect,
as desserts, pure sugars and candies may be
used as such in their stead to great advantage,
because they are healthful, being warming,
mutritious and agreeable ; hence, as a table
article, they are very valuable, while the al
most universal love of them shows that they
were intended to be eaten. If a child is not
allowed to eat anything containing sugar it
will sicken and die in a very short Untie. Chil
dren need the carbon, the fuel contained in
sugar, to keep them warm; without it they
would perish from cold ; hence the love of
sweet things is an instinct, implanted by the
kind and wise Maker of us all, for the child's
preservation. There are a parcel of stupid
creatures in the world whose sole stock in trade
of brains and logic amounts to this, that "what
ever is good is unhealthy." It is not advised
that children should be allowed to eat sugar
and candy whenever they want it ; but that as
a dessert, after each regular meal, the use of
pure sugars and candies would benefit and not
injure.—Hall's Journal of Health.
THE STAR SPANGLED "BANG'R" IN TROUBLE
Adafx.----If ever a poor flag suffered the "slings
and arrows of outraged fortune," it is the
Star Spangled Banner. If "Kirby" is dis
posed to 4-shuffle off this mortal coil," his last
dying request is that he may be wrapped up in
the American flag. If Mr. Florence is de
sirous of getting off a "gag," he clutches the
stars and stripes, straddles once or twice
across the stage, strikes a dramatic attitude,
looks fishy about the eyes, heaves a sigh, sheds
a tear or two, and gazing intently on the stars,
exclaims, "Thank God! they are all there."
This clap-trap is of the most ingenious spe
cies; hence the audience applaud. If Miss
Itichings is anxious to make herself notorious,
she manages to get tangled up in the star
spangled "bang'r," and at once it is heraled
about the country that she has trampled that
"storied emblem" under her feet. The last
infliction our national emblem has suffered
from, occurred at Wyman's Hall, a few eve
nings since_ The Democrat thus relates it
"When the tattered flag was shown which the
heroic Kane planted at the farthest point of
his daring journey, a gentleman stepped before
the audience, asked leave to take the flag,
raised it to his lips, and after reverently kis
sing it, pressed it to his heart. The effect
upon the audience was resistless, and instan
taneously all arose to their feet and most en
thusiastically endorsed the action by three
hearty cheers."
If the man who did that will present himself
at our office, we will give him a nice little stick
of candy with red ribbons around it.—St. Louis
Bulletin.
As ALLEGED SWINDLE.—An extensive swin
dle is said to have come to light in New York
within a day or two_ The story runs that a
well-known official, holding a State office, was
entrusted with $30,000 or $40,000 by certain
parties, a few weeks ago, to
.engineer through
the Legislature of New York certain contracts,
that instead of using the cash to grease the
machine and' secure the contracts, he put it
into his own pocket, and decamped for parts as
yet unknown.

MRS. WINSLOW,
An experienced Nurse and Female Physician, presents
to the attention of mothers, her
SOOTHING SYRUP,
FOR CHILDREN TEETHING,
which greatly facilitates the process of teething, by
softening the gams, reducing all inflammation—will
allay ALL PAIN and spasmodic action, and is
SURE TO REGULATE THE BOWELS.
Depend upon it mothers, it will give rest to yourselves,
and RELIEF AND HEALTH TO YOUR INFANTS.
We have put up and sold this article for over ten years,
and CAN SAY, IN CONFIDENCE AND TRUTH of it,
what we have never been able to say of any other medi
tine—NEVER HAS IT FAILED, IN A SINGLE IN
STANCE, TO EFFECT A CURE, when timely used
Never did we know an instance of dissatisfaction by any
one who used it. On the contrary, all are delighted with
it; operations, and speak in terms of commendation of
its magical effects and medical virtues. We speak in
this matter WHAT WE DO KNOW," after ten years'
experience, AND PLEDGE OUR REPUTATION FOR
THE FULFILLMENT OF WHAT WE HERE DE
CLARE. In almost every instance where the infant is
suffering from pain and exhaustion, relief will be found
in fifteen or twenty minutes after the syrup is adminis
tared.
This valuable preparation ia the prescription of one o
the most EXPERIENCED and SKILLFUL NURSES in
New England, and has been used with NEVER FAIL
ING SUCCESS in
THOUSANDS OF OASES.
It not only ivlieves the child from pain, but Invigo
rates the stomach and bowels, corrects acidity, and
gives tone and energy to the whole system. It will al
most instantly relieve
GRIPING IN THE BOWELS, AND WIND COLIC,
and overcome convulsions, which, if not speedily reme
died, end in death. We believe it the BEST and SUREST
REMEDY IN THE WORLD, in all cases of DYSEN
TERY and DIARRHCEA IN CHILDREN, whether it
arises from teething, or from any other cause. We would
say to every mother who has a child suffering from any
of the foregoing complaints—DO NOT LET YOUR PRE
JUDICES, NOR THE PREJUDICES OF OTHERS, stand
between you and your suffering child, and the relief that
will be SURE—yes, ABSOLUTELY SURE—to follow the
mit of this medicine, if timely used. Full directions for
using will accompany each bottle. None genuine unless
the fan-simile of CURTIS & PERKINS, New York, is
on the outside wrapper.

Read the following from the New York Conner :
ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE New YORK MERCHANT...
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there is
one place in our city where the physician, apotts•eary
and country merchant, can go and purchase pure wi n d
and Liquors, as purees imported, and of the best qualitr
We do not intend to give an elaborate description o f 1 1;i
merchant's extensive business, although it will well re.
pay any stranger or citizen to visit UDOLYI/0 IVOISE . 4
extensive warehouse, Nos, 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos . 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. Hie stodcof
Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not hare
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, RHO)
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1838 to 1836; and tea
thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Pert Winea,
Scotch and 'lrish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Ruin;
some very old and equal to any in this country. lie also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &-n,.
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling;
Mr. WoLvE's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and sre hope in
less than two years he may be equally success( with
his Brandies and Wines.
Ilia business merits the patronage of every lover of
his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. WOLFE, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with WoLFR's cure Wnas and
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. WOLF; for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op.
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi
tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
