Tsars ABOUT "SAX PATOR."--HIS LAST
Ls/LT.—A correspondent of the Rochester (N.
Y.) Dermoavt takes exception to a statement
concerning the renowned Sam Patch which re
cently appeared in an English book, and gives
the correct version of the story of that indi
vidual's last leap. lie says :
"Sam Patche's last leap occurred on the af
ternoon of the 15th of November, 1829, on a
cold, cloudy, and dismal autumn day. The
heavens, as if in keeping with the melancholy
spectacle, were almost clothed in sackcloth.—
The sun refused to look upon the mournful
tragedy. But ten thousand human beings,
more thoughtless, lined the banks of the river
on Loth sides, perched also•upon the mills and
houses, and in trees, above and below the high
banks, to cheer and encourage thepoor drunken
suicide in his self-immolation. A scaffold was
erected thirty feet high, on the island above
the falls, as they then were, standing very
near where the saw mill upon the brow of the
cataract now is. From:that scaffold poor Sam
dropped into the deep water, as it then was,
below_
"Ten thousand eager eyes watched him as he
went like an arrow down against the dark
leige of rocks, a distance of one hundred and
twenty-six feet. Ten thousand eyes gazed
with breathless anxiety upon the place where
he fell, expecting to see him emerge from the
water, as he had done most gracefully.justone
week before, had jumped from the precipice
without the scaffold, a distance of 95 feet;
boats were put out below and sailed around
the spot, ready to pick him up. Ten thousand
people, like a great crowd of witnesses still
lining the cliffs, still straining their eyes to
catch the first glimpse of any dark speck on
the waters, no one daring to move or draw a
long breath, for near half an hour, until one
by one they began to turn away and give him
up, many with tearful eyes, many with - words
saddened and subdued upon their lips, 'Poor
Sam—it was his last leap. How fool-hardy 1—
How wicked!' And some were heard .to say
'How wicked to countenance a miserable man
in such suicide! If we hatt not been looking
on he would not have done it:"' • • •
"For two longhours, at least, until darkness
stopped their work, eager men hunted, all over
and through the waters below the Falls, to
find the poor remains of the miserable victim
of his own folly, but- found them not.- Next
day the search was renewed. Indeed it -was
kept up with more or less diligence for some
time; and yet all in vain for that season.—
Searching, fishing in the water day after day,
revealed nothing. But the next spring the
body was picked up by some unknown person
near the mouth of the river, seven miles below,
as it was floating out into the lake. It had laid
in the water all winter; had gone down over
the lower falls also, and still was in such a
state of preservation as to be readily identified.
It was taken up and decently buried in a spot
of ground near at hand?"
Novez Lew-Sum—We have just printed a
paper book for the supreme Court in a case,
the like of which has never occurred before in
this State, and from the fact that the counsel
on neither side have quoted any decisions of
the Courts on the point at issue, we presume
it has not yet been decided anywhere.
The ease is briefly this: Elisha Harris, of
Exeter, this county, died in July, 1858. For
some years he had lived alone, his wife being
dead, leading a solitary and secluded life.—
Letters of administration were granted upon
his estate, an inventory made and a vendue of
his personal estate advertised. It had been
supposed by his neighbors that he was pos
sessed of considerable money and notes, but
none of any consequence could be found by
his administrators. At the vendue, among
some rubbish in an unfinished room of the
house, was found a block of wood about three
feet long and one foot square, supported by
four legs, having on top a horizontal wheel and
a perpendicular spindle, apparently some kind
of unfinished machinery. This nondescript
machine was put up and sold to David M.
Huthmacher for the sum of fifteen cents, who
paid the bid and took it home. Concluding it
was of no use, Huthmacher took his axe and
split it open, intending to make firewood of it,
when he found a secret drawer nicely fitted in
the block containing $lOO in bank notes, $446
in gold, $41.34 in silver, two silver watches
valued at $6O. a pocket compass, and $3,106.89
in notes against persons in the vicinity, besides
the title papers to the land of Harris of con
siderable value. Huthmacher, though poor,
immediately gave notice of his discovery, and
entered into an amicable action of trover and
conversion to determine whether he should
hold the treasure or whether it should go back
to the estate. On the trial below, Judge Con
yngham. in an elaborate opinion, ordered
judgment to be entered against Huthmacher.
and it now goes to the Supreme Court for final
adjudication. When decided it will add a truly
novel case to the Reports of Pennsylvania. Col.
IL B. Wright for Huthmacher and Gen. E. L.
Dana for the estate.—Luzerne Union.
Ins Ilinroarry REGIME.—On the fourth of
March, for the first time in the history of our
government, was an administration installed
in power, in opposition to the wishes of all the
slave-holding States of the Confederacy, and a
large majority of the people of the United
States. Mr. Lincoln was elected to the high
office of Chief Magestrate upon a purely sec
tional issue, in opposition to the institutions
of fifteen sovereign States, divided by a geo
graphical line from the other States, and by a
party whose leading dogma is eternal warfare
upon slavery in every State and Territory of
the Union. Upon this dangerous issue, there-_
fore, a party has been borne into power whose
principles are antagonistic to the welfare and
perpetuity of the Republic, and that too by a
meagre mirority of the popular vote of the
nation. The aggregate vote for Mr. Lincoln,
ascertained by the returns, amounted to only
1,865,840; whilst the whole vete cast for all
the candidates was 4,739,982—making the
official vote cast against him and his party
2,874,142. If from those who voted for him
we deduct the old line Whigs and Conserva
tives, who merely desired a change in the gov
ernment, but did notiintend to endorse the Chi
cago platform, and who if they had the priva
lege of voting at this moment would oast their
suffrages in a very different direction, the
strictly Republican vote would not exceed one
million, against upwards of three million seven
hundred thousand opposed to the Chicago plat
form. Yet, in the face of all these facts and
figures it bra been claimed ever since the
Presidential election, that this small Republi
can minority have a right to enforce their odious
policy over the large and overwhelming major
ity of the American people, even should it even- '
'ware the overthrow of the Constitution, the
disruption of the Union, and all the horrors of
internecine strife and bloodshed.—Lanauter
Ate/Niemen.

BELIEF AND HEALTH TO YOUR INFANTS
We have put up and sold this article for over ten years,
and CAN SAY, IN CONFIDENCE AND TRUTH of it,
what we have never been able to say of any other medi
oine--NEVER HAS IT FAILED, IN A SINGLE IN
STANCE, TO EFFECT A CURE, when timely used
Never did we know an instance of dissatisfaction by any
one who used it. On the contraryiall are delighted with
its operations, and speak in terms of commendation of
its magical effects and medical virtues. We speak in
this matter st WHAT WE DO KNOW," after ten years ,
experience, AND PLEDGE OUR REPUTATION FOR
THE FULFILLMENT OF •WHAT WE HERE-DE
CLARE. In almost every instance where the infant is
suffering from pain and exhaustion, relief will be found
in fifteen or twenty minutes after the syrup is adminis
tered.
This valuable preparation is the prescription of one of
the most EXPERIENCED and SKILLFUL NURSES in
New England, and has been used with NEVER FAIL
ING SUCCESS in
THOUSANDS OF CASES.
It not only relieves the child from pain, but invigo
rates the stomach and bowels, corrects acidity, and
gives tone and energy to the whole system. It will al
most instantly relieve
GRIPING. IN THE BOWELS, AND WIND COLIC,
and overcome convulsions which, if not speedily reme
died, end in death. We believe it the BEST and SUREST
REMEDY IN THE WORLD, in all cases of DYSEN
TERY and DIARRIMA IN CHILDREN, whether it
arises from teething, or from any other cause. We would
say to every mother who has a child suffering from any
.of the foregoing complaints----DO NOT LET YOUR PRE
JUDICES, NOR THE PREJUDICES OF OTHERS, stand
between you and your suffering child, and the relief that
will be SURE—yes, ABSOLUTELY SURE—to follow the
use of this medicine, if timely used: Furl diredtions for
using will accompany each, bottle. _Nonegenuine unless

ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW Yoroc MERCHANT....
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there la
one place in our city where the physician, apothecary,
and country merchant, can go and purchase pun Wi nes
and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality,
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive business, although it will veil re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit lIDOLEHO 'Wolves
extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street,
and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of
Pcimapps on band ready for nhipment, could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1866; and ten
thousand eases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Winee,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Run;
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, k,..
in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling;
Mr. WoLFE'S sales of Schnapps last year amounted to
one hundred and eighty thoUsand dozen, and we hope in
less than two years he may be equally succeasf sick
his Brandies and Wines.
His business merits the patronage of every lover of
his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. WOLF; until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with Wor.vs's pure WINES and
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. Worms, for the accommodation or
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but but
tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
