MI A NICE Swinuns.—On Friday evening, a neatly dressed woman of lady-like address, vis ited a lady proprietor of a well known ladies' clothing store on Camp street. She said she was the wife of an overseer on Mr. Monroe's plantation, up the Opelousas Railroad ; that Mr. Monroe was absent from the State ; that a few days since the overseer's house was de stroyed by fire, and she lost all her clothing, except what she had on ; that she came to get help from Mr. Monroe's brother, Mayor Mon roe ; and that this gentleman had given her an order on this store for whatever goods she might chooseto select. She submitted a carte blanche signed "Mayor Monroe ;" the lady orekeeper looked at it, and took it for good. The visiting lady then selected some $lB worth of cheap undergarments and other necessary ar ti c l e s. She was in a sad state of mind, and did not wish to take any of the finer or costlier articles that Mrs.—laid before her ; she would not abuse the kindness of the Mayor, who had so generously assisted her on his brother's account. She could have taken $lOO worth of goods as easily as $lB worth.— As she left, with the bundle in her arm, she took up one of the store cards, saying that when she got money from her husband, she would return and select a nicer and larger lot of goods. The lady storekeeper's husband called on the Mayor next morning with the order, and the bill, and asked for the "spondulicks." The Mayor, after examining both documents, said be wouldn't pay, for four reasons: firstly, his brother's plantation was not on the Opelousas railroad; secondly, his brother never owned a plantation; thirdly, he had no brother; and fourthly, and lastly, he never wrote the order. The collector's eyebrows went up on his head so forcibly that his hat fell off. He whistled one long note ; laughed ; exclaimed, "sold again, by —, " and traveled.—N. 0. Crescent. A PHANTOM CARPENTNR.—Certain odd noises have perplexed the worshippers of St. John's Church in Detroit for some time past. The Free Pram tells this story of the cause :—These sounds were abundant at night, and caused great :perplexity among the neighbors, who through wonder and other sentiments, were unable to sleep. An investigating committee was the consequence, which, after arduous ser vice, principally expended in breakneck ex cursions on the ridge of the roof, and perilous slides down inclined planes and scaffold poles, discovered the cause. A loose board in the roofing was the source of it all. It was a very peculiar board. It hung in such a way that the wind whistled through the building "sit night itpounded like a hammer and squeaked like a saw, and thus made a very good phantom carpenter. Then it made eccentric sorties this way and that, and produced other sounds such as might have emanated from a posse of stone masons in full blast, and was even accused by imaginative people of having articulated in good English the words "more mort," as though the ghostly hod-carriers might have been dila tory. In this and in other ways, entirely at variance with the proprieties of the place, it managed to make a great deal of noise and create no little talk. FATAL EFFECT OF FORTIINS Teirawa—A few days ago in Cincinnati an inquest was held on the body of Conrad Walter, a young man twenty years of age, who committed suicide by delibe rately shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Deceased lived with his parents, and was al ways considered a sober, steady and industrious boy. It was given in evidence before the jury yesterday, that some years ago he went to a fortune-teller in the city to consult his fate.— The sybil informed him gravely that as soon as he arrived at the age of twenty he would die or be 'aka—that he could not possibly live to the age of twenty-one except in misery and woe, to which he would prefer death. Walter was twenty years of age a couple of weeks since. Happening to be out of employment at the time, he believed the prediction of the for tune-teller was about to be verified, if not as regarded his death, at least with regard to the misery of his life. This, it is thought, induced him to commit the act of self-destruction, as no other reason can be assigned, and such was in part the verdict of the jury. The case is certainly a sad comment on the amount of faith which young people too often place At the say ings of the unprincipled class alluded to.—Cin cinnati Commercial. THE NEGRO PATRIOT.--SenatOr Wilson, in a recent speech, said that the first martyr of the revolution was a negro named Crispus Attucks. The Boston Courier thus disposes of that claim to honorable mention in his tory: " History and tradition both are sadly at fault, if Crispns was a patriot, or the son of a patriot. According to the most reliable infor mation from these sources, he was neither more nor less than a turbulent, rowdy black man, temporarily in Boston at the time, being a sailor or cook, attached to a coasting vessel, then in the harbor, and bound for North Caro lina. He went into State street, not dreaming of being a patriot., or entertaining the remotest idea of becoming a hero; but because there was a row, and for the mere fun of the thing. He possessed the moral qualities of a patriot in the ratio of his physical capacities as a mob ocrat and bully. Fortunately for his memory he was killed. If he had survived that ren centre, he would not have lived another day, and to die in a less glorious manner. As it happened, accident made him a hero, but poli tics can never make him a patriot." A plausible English lad, Charles A. Thor oyison, who pretended to have untold wealth and rich uncles, was recently sent to jail in Itochestor for swindling. He aroused the sym pathy of Darius Perrin, Esq., banker, who believing that he was a neophyte in crime, and reclaimable by the use of proper measures, became his security, had him released from jail, took him home, and supplied him with every comfort as a member of his family. The dastardly young scamp behaved so well that he won the esteem of his benefactor and his fam ily. Early on Wednesday morning, however, he stole to young Perrin's room, picked his pocket of the office and safe keys, and decamped with $154 50. The astonished and indignant family did not discover the yourg rascal's dis appearance till breakfast time, when he was telegraphed in all directions, and arrested at Utica, on the arrival of the early morning train. In September 1805, a penniless young me chanic, lately arrived from England, encoun tered a pleasant faced gentleman, in his wan dering about New York, standing in the door way of his house. He was made welcome to stop there till he could gat employment and a home. Twenty-five years after, that same me *hank was employed by Major Noah, then surveyor of•the port, to put together a machine, then in the Custom-House, and take models of it. This was done; improvements were made, and he died in 1833. The son succeeded his father in the business and further improved it to what it is to-day ; the machine is Hoe's 10 cylinder press ; the penniless Engligh lad was Robert Hoe; the good samaritan was Grant Thorburn. Tara Pis ABOLITIONIST.-A Southern cler gyman says that in all his reading of the Bible, 'he never succeeded in finding any account of an Abolitionist in it. We beg to differ with him, for we believe there is one referred to fre quently—we mean Satan. He is the genuine, original, Simon Pure Abolitionist. He has always been in favor of abotithing every thing that was good. lie was the first to advocate the "higher law." lie tried the experiment in hetiven, and got kicked out for his audacity, and then undertook to contentlimself with the reflection that it was "better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." ALL IN BOTTLES, I beg leave to call the attention of the citizens of the United States to the above WINES and LIQUORS lie. ported by lIDOLPHO WOLFS, of New York Whose name is familiar in every part of this country for the Purity of his celebrated SORUEDAM Scrum. Mr. Notre. in his letter to me, speaking of the purity of his Wi n and LIQUORS, says: " will stake my reputation 811 e man, my standing as a merchant of thirty years' reel. dente in the City of New York, that all the IMAxrcr and Wilms which I bottle are pore as imported, and of the best quality, and can be re li ed . upon by every purchaser): Every bottle has the proprietor's name on the wax, and a fat simile of his signature on the certificate. We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that therein one place in our city where the physician, apotheca r y, and country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wins and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality. We do not intend to give an elaborate description of Thi s merchant's extensive business, although it will well re. pay any stranger or- citizen to visit BDOLPIIO Wotren extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Marketffeld street. His sto e hj Schnapps on band ready for shipment could not hate been less than thirty thousand cases ; the Brandy, some ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1838 to 1856; and ten thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines, Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Roe; some very old and equal to any in this country. He MN had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &e, in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling: Mr. Wormi's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less than two years he may be equally succeed' with his Brandies and Wines. His business merits the patronage of every lover of his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct to Mr. Wor.ric, until every Apothecary in the land make up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their shelves, and replace it with WoLvit's Dure Wins and LIQUORS. We understand Mr. WOLFS, for the accommodation of small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant, should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imi tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
