NI CHINESE LIBRARIES.—The Zeitsehrift fur Allgemeine Erdkunde gives the following curious details respecting libraries in China al The Chinese have no public libraries, in the sense we attribute to the word, and even the estab lishments expressly intendei by the founder for the use of the public (as that in the palace of gienhing, at Hang Chau) are only accessible to persons provided with special permission from the authorities, and are, consequently, very little frequented. There are, however, a great many private libraries, the most impor tant perhaps being that belonging to the Fau family at Ningpo, which, according to its catalogue, contains four thousand and ninety four works, comprised in fifty-three thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine kicuen, or small volumes. When Kienhing, in 1774, determined to complete the collectioa of the imperial li brary, he appealed to the literati throughout the empire for the loan or purchase of all rare or curious works, and the Fau family supplied six hundred and ninety-six valuable 'books.— For that service they received a complete copy of the Ku-kin-tu-shu-chi-ting, or encyclopedia of books, ancient and modern; which was printed with moveable copper types by order of the Emperor Kanghi. It contains notices of ten thousand works on astronomy and other Sciences. This library of the Feu family is guarded with as much jealousy as the fabled garden of the Hesperides. It is situated in the southern quarter of Ningpo, in the center of a large garden, decorated with all the re sources of Chinese art. Every member of the family has a lock to the library, of which he keeps the key, so that all the family must be present when the library is entered. The same -regulation prevails in other family libraries.— The Zeitschrift thinks that these extensive col lections of books may contain unexplored tree flares of information, and earnestly advises the geographical society, recently established at Shanghai, to study them and extract whatever may concern the science of geography, ancient or modern. It is somewhat remarkable that geographical works are scarce in these libraries, but very numerous in general circulation. They are called Tachi, and are mostly historical and topographical sketches of particular districts. For the province Tsche-Siang alone they form a collection of seven hundred volumes, and for the whole empire, the number can hardly be less that ten thousand." BSVOLT OP CONVICTS. —On Monday, 11 th ult., the convicts in the Chatham prison, (England,) numbering eleven hundred men, succeeded in overpowering their keepers, and for the space of a few hours held undisturbed sway of the prison. - Upon being ordered to return to work after dinner, a gang of about fifty turned upon their keepers in the yard, whom they soon overpowered and drove before them. Other gangs of convicts then joined the mutineers, and the keepers on duty, to the number of about one hundred and fifty, were driven out of the prison by the infuriated convicts. The prisoners in the cells were then liberated, and a scene of the utmost confusion ensued. After gaining their liberty, the convicts immediately commenced a wholesele work of destruction in the interior of the prison. A large number of them rushed into the office of Captain Powell, where they commenced destroying the books and papers, and every other available article on which they could lay their hands—desks, tables, chairs, and everything which could be broken up being quickly destroyed. They then endeavored to set the prison on fire, and the building was actually fired in two or three places, from which the flames began to pour forth, but were extinguished from the outside. Information of the revolt was sent to the garri son, and one thousand troops were soon on the ground. The convicts were driven into their cells at the point of the bayonet, and order once more restored. The next day punishment Was ordered on about ninety of the mutineers. DISCOVERY Or A NEW SUBSTANCE IN TRH ATMOSPHEILE.—A, writer in the National In telligencer states that the theory of Mr. Clem son, head of the agricultural department of the Patent Office, of living organisms in the at mosphere, which he made public in 1859, has been adopted by a French chemist, named Bar ral, and announced to the French Academy. Mr, Clemson's theory is that the air, like water, teems with minute living organisms; that there is phosphoric acid in the air, derived from the successive generation after generation of my lads of these organisms produced, living and dying in the atmosphere; that such organisms exist and are at work, assimilating from one to another, preparing food for more perfect organisms, from the microscopic point of life up to the most perfect animal existence. It is expected that this discovery will explain why the earth is increased in fertility by being bro ken up and exposed tu the air. It contains meteorology with agriculture, and will, when fully developed, open a new page to the learned of the relation of the spots on the sun, the de gree of fertility of the earth, and electrical changes of the atmosphere and magnetical con dition of the earth • NO COMMUNION WITH SILANSHOLDERS.—Har per's Weekly contains a cutting carricature upon Beecher. There is a picture of the sanctuary, the brethren at prayer, Beecher at the table with cup in hand to administer the sacrament. Washington is kneeling and reaches out his hand for the cup while Beecher turns from him and bids him begone, and old John Brown stands behind with lance in hand point ing to a motto " The Higher Law—no commu nion with slaveholders." The brethren and sisters hang their heads with shame as Wash ington, upon his knees at the altar, with one hand upon his heart and the other reaching forth to the pastor. is denied the privilege Of touching his lips to the cup which even the negro is not refused if he be a Christian. Mr. Beecher was in Dewey's News Room last evening, and his attention was called to this picture. He looked at it for some time— long enough to comprehend its full purpose and meaning and then laid it down, saying "that is hard."—.Rochester INCREASE OF TIM FRENCH ARMY TO A MILLION Man.—The long threatened ministerial decree by which the French army is to be raised to the efficient but not numerical strength of 1,000,000 has appeared. The French army is annually recruited by 100,000 men, who serve for seven years. All of these 100,000 recruits, obtained by the lottery conscriptions, are not drafted Into the army ; but only as many as may be required to fill the vacancies arising from the discharge of men whose term of service has expired, of invalids, and by death. The remainder, "the reserve," have heretofore, even during the Crimean and Italian wars, been allowed to remain at home. Hereafter, sithe reserve" is to be called into active service, that is, to be drilled and barracked for three months the first year of their service, two months the second year of their service, one month the third year of their service, and •quarterly" every remaining year of their service. COAL IlitA/1 T,—AMOllg the inTeutions of later years. the existence of which is not gen erally known as it might be, is coal brandy. A weekly paper states that, owing to the mould and rottin g of the grape French brandy-ma kers have adopted bituminous coalas a substi tute. They distil potent spirit from this sub stance, which is thus made available for the production of two kinds of fire—one for the comfort of man and the other far the destruc tion of his health. Large quantities of alcohol distilled from coal, and "doctored" with cer tain wiemicals to give it the "Cognac flavor," e re now exported from France to England. Coal brandy is the latest adaptation of the good gift of Providence to the purpose of poi son-mongers that comes to our knowledg-.= Coal tar has long been used for flavoring wi l l s . key. ASHTON No. 832 Market street, Philadelphia Sae Agent for Philadglpkia Read the following from the New York Courier: ENORMOUS BUSINESS FOR ONE NEW YORE IitROHAIIT.-- We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens thatthere is one place in our city where the physician, apothecary and country merchant, can go and purchase pure - wines and Liquors, as pure as imported, and of the best quality, We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this merchant's extensive business, although it will well re. pay any stranger or citizen to visit UDOLPRO WOLlt's extensive warehouse, Nos. 18, 20 and 22, Beaver street, and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Marketfield street. His stock of Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not h ave been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, same ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1838 to 1858; and tee thousand- cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines, Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix tam; some very old and equal to any in this country. Be also had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &e. in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling: idr..Wozra'a sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope is less than two years be may be equally success( wilt his Brabdies and Wines. His business merits the patronage of every lover et his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and Liqtio w for medical use should send their orders direct to Mr. W.sLRs , until every Apothecary in the Insdinnke up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their shelves, and replace it with WoLou'a pure WINES and LIQUORS. _ _ We understand Mr. WOLIFE, for the accommodation of small dealers in the country, puts up assorted eases of Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant, should be sustained against his tens of thousands of ay. ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but inn tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
