rid Paorrrs or C.UR FARM.—The operations of 1860 having been fairly closed, we are now enabled to give a full account of the affairs of our farm for the past year. The farm consists, at present, of 53f acres of upland, and 68 aeres of woods, salt meadows, etc. As the precise methods of culture, etc., pursued on our farm may be found throughout our pages, we give' without comment the report of our Superintendent, Mr. P. T. gainu, made in answer to the following :—Ed. Working Farmer. Mr. P. T. QUINN. Dear Sir :—You will oblige by furnishing me with an accurate statement of the operations of the farm for the year 1860, -with such remarks as you may consider neces sary to the full understanding of your report. Yours, respectfully, JAMES J. MATES. Prof. J. J. MAPES. Dear Sir 2—lri complianee with your request, I submit the following statement of receipts and disbursements, to gether with an account of the improvements made since the farm Caine into your possession, twelve years ago. The soil is a heavy, decom posed red kellis, with a sub-soil of similar material, nearly impervious to water, abound ing in springs, and until exposed for a time to atmospheric influences, quite rock-like in tex ture, resembling furruginous sand stone ; in its natural state nearly sterile, and seldom could be found a more unpromising field than the original 35 acres with which you commenced. These were -half covered with weeds, elders, blackberry bushes, stone fences, stretching like great serpents ; part effectually defying the approach of plow and cultivator, with large bowlders scattered on and through the sail. Any ordinary zeal would have been deterred from the attempt to turn this tract into a fertile and profitable garden. To rid the ground of these unprofitable denizens, who stubbornly maintained their rights, and to introduce desired vegetation, was a work which demanded lime, patience, and investment.— The depth of surface-plowing being gradually increased, accompanied by thorough sub-soil plowing, efficient manuring and judicious sur face culture, enabled the land to be effectually subdued. After a few experiments it was acertained that under-draining promised pro fitable results, and therefore the original farm, and at later periods the accessions, were nearly all so treated. By this means, combined with thorough snbsoiling, the soil is now in full and efficient filth, to a depth of eighteen inches, and disturbed to a still greater depth. All Vas has been produced at much less expense than was originally anticipated, owing to the introduction of improved and labor-saving machines. Daring the past ten years the farm has been gradually increased in value by the planting of war trees, until we now have 5000 in good condition, and with which we have met with the most encouraging success, attributable to the thorough preparation of the soil, and to the proper method of culture having been strictly pursued. TIL IS essential to the success of fruit trees, that the disintegration of the soil should be thorough before planting them, for the tree once in place, no ingenuity can plow beneath its roots, so as to permit the hungry fibres to de 3send ; this action cannot be insured without ander draining and sub-soil plowing. Both before and after putting the trees in place, there should be a plentiful application of inorganic manures, for fermentable manures should in no case be applied to any kind of fruit trees. The manures applied to the trees have;been always of the inorganic sorts; chiefly consisting of Mapes' Phosphates, and occasion ally slight dressings of unleached wood ashes. After fairtrial we have arrived at the con elusion, that our soil and climate are not fa vorable to the profitable culture of grapes, and are therefore removing, as agreed upon last year, the Vineyard, substituting pear trees in place of the vines. With the currant, however, our experience lias been far more encouraging. We of course commenced with the Red Dutch, which has be come much improved by extra culture, and we intend to plant more of this old kind during she coming year, notwithstanding the excel lence of the Versailles, which will, before many years, be propagated in sufficient quantities to take preeminence. The Cherry Currant was not at first very prolific but it bore better last year, and we hope to find it improve greatly by age. Our cultivation of the Raspberry has also been crowned with success. The Fastolf, Franconia, Red Antwerp,White Antwerp, being the best marketable varieties; but for imme diate use, the Brinkle's Orange is very desira ble, being fine flavored, melting, and prolific, though too soft for transportation. The Lawton Blackberry we have had for six years under cultivation, with great success. In cola, northern exposures, it is liable to be win ter-killed. When the fruit is fully ripe it is delicious; but from its extreme acidity, tasting ca if a "quart of berries has been sharpened to a pint," before its full maturity, the Lawton has met with some pretty keen rebuffs. Of Strawberries we have now fifty varieties on trial; of these we are at present inclined to advocate the long approved Hovey's, Wilson's, Hooker's Seedling, and Triomphe de Gand, as the most profitable for market, to which list we 'ill be glad to add others, after another year's We have thus far preferred to cultivate small fruits for the sake of the fruit itself, but the growing demand for reliable plants is fast per suading us to turn our attention to their pro pagation. The purpose of the farm has been steadily directed to the production of fruit and seed, but in order to accomplish this, the produce was at first chiefly that of the market garden. The yield per acre has been steadily upon the in crease for these crops; but little by little the favorite plants have encroached upon their en riched domain, until we are nearly confined to the cultivation of fruits and seeds. We have judged it strict economy to use in all cases the best labor saving implements, and the Nitrogen ised Super-phosphate of Lime, to which we have no hesitation in ascribing our most profitable neenits. Portions of the land now in grass, are main tained in good condition by top a dressing of two hundred pounds of phosphate per acre. If the grass should give any indication of running out. the subsoil plow is run through, in lines four feet apart. This loosens the soil, the grass im mediately begins to tiller, and the field is re stored. In connection with the fertilizers enu merated below, we have availed ourselves of all memo produced. upon the farm, The following is an account of the receipts and disbursements for the year 1861: BALKS OF IPIODUOT estakageg $778 19 _ 427 37 . 140 60 139 08 ~ 429 80 turnips . ....... 287 84 111/091 225 13 Iteeds • —2,346 86 Potatoes-- - • ........ 76 9 3.1. jtaipberrjes i lnacirberries, and Currant 510 45 Strawberry Plants and 266 73 Grapes/ 47 14 Pears, pear tram, and grafts Ms 27 Tomatoes - 97 80 Rhubarb and rhubarb plants 410 95 plum vegetables, etc., etc 158 87 Calves 112 50 1,800 00 fern fodder ... 60 00 95 00 Total sales— ....... • r • naranasti DISBURI3IIII .- $91610 07 11NTS.
