EXCER We subjoin a tew striking paragraphs from the two elegant volumes, just from the press of 'Messrs_ Ticknor St Fields—" Elsie Venner, a Romance of Destiny," nee " The Professor's Story." The reader of the book will find that we have extracted only a fraction of the bril liant and suggestive thoughts it contains. —A scholar is, in a large proportion of cases, the son of scholars or scholarly persons. —Good ministers will tell you they have parishieners who beat them in the practice of the virtues. —An overworked woman is always a sad Might, sadder a great deal than an overworked man, because she is so much more fertile in capacities of suffering than a man. —lt is wonderful how men and women know their peers. If two strange queens, sole sur vivors of two shipwrecked vessels, were cast, half naked, on a rock together, each would at once address the other as " our royal sister." —Remember that nature makes every man love all women, and trusts the trivial matter of special choice to the commonest accident. —" Where's all the oranges gone to ?" said Mrs. Sprewle. I expected there'd be ever so many of 'em left. I didn't see many of the folks eatin' oranges. Where's the skins of 'em? There ought to be ga dozen orange skins round on the plates, and there a'n't one dozen. Has anybody counted the spoons ? Some of 'em got swallered, perhaps. I hope they was plated ones if they did !" —Rules worth remembering by those who attend Faneuil Hall dinners. Thus: Lobsters' °laws are always acceptable to children of all ages. Oranges and apples are to be taken one at a time, until the coat poektits begin to become inconveniently heavy. Cakes are injured by sitting upon them ; it is, therefore, well to carry a stout tin box of a size to hold as many pieces as there are children in the domestic circle. A very pleasant amusement, at the close of one of these banquets, is grabbing for the flowers with which the tabl?. is embellished. These will please the ladies at home very greatly, and, if the children are at the same time abundantly supplied with fruits, nuts, cakes and any little ornamental articles of con fectionery which are of a nature to be unosten tatiously removed, the kind-hearted parent will make a whale household happy, without any additional eitpense beyond the outlay for his ticket. —No man or woman can appropriate beauty without paying for it—in endowments, in for tune, in position, in self-surrender, or other - valuable stock ; and there are a great malty who are too poor, too ordinary, too humble, too busy, too proud, to pay any of these prices for it. So the unbeautiful get many more lovers than the beauties only, as there are more of them, their lovers are spread thinner, and do not make so much show. —When a New Englander has lost his self respect as a citizen and a man, he is demoral iz.ed, and cannot be trusted with the money to pay for a dinner. —Paleontologists will, by-and by, be exam ining the floors of our kitchens for tracks of the extinct native species of serving man. The female of the same race is fast dying out; in deed, the time is act distant when all the varieties of young women will have vanished from New England, as the dodo has perished in the Mauritius. The young lady is all that we shall have left, and the mop and duster of the lost Almira or Loizy will be stared at by generations of Bridgets and Noras, as that fa mous head and foot of the lost bird are stared at in the Ashmolean Museum. —When he [Abel Stebbins from New Hamp shire] came to live with the Doctor, he made up his mind he would dismiss the old gentle man if he did not behaTo according to his notions of propriety. —Wherever two natures have a great deal in common, the conditions of a first-rate quar rel are furnished ready made. Relations are very apt to hate each other just because they sae too much alike. It is so frightful to be in an atmosphere of family idiosyncracies ; to see all the hereditary uncomeliness or infirmity of body, all the defects of speech, all the failings of temper, intensified by concentrativir,-eo that every fault of our own finds itself multiplied by reflection, like our imam in a saloon lined with mirrors. Nature knnws what she is about. —I know the families that have a way of living through everything, and I know the other set that have the trick of dying without any kind of reason for it. I knew the years when the fevers and dysenteries are in earnest, and when theylre only making believe. I know the folks that think they're dying as soon as they're sick, and the folks that never find out they're sick till they're dead. —Some women unquestionably suggest the image of serpents ; men rarely or never. I have been struck, like many others, with the ophidian head and eye of the famous Rachel. —Keep your temper, if you can—for one angry man is as good as another. Treat bad men exactly as if they were insane_ —A man always loves a woman, and a wo man a man, unless some good reason exists to the contrary, —Certificates are, for the most part, like ostrich-eggs; the giver never knows what is hatched out of them. But once in a thousand times they act as curses are said to—come home to roost. —When you find a person a little better than his word, a little more liberal than his promise, a little more than borne out in his statements by his facts, a little larger in deed than in speech, you recognize a kind of eloquence in that person's utterance, not laid down in Blair or Campbell. —Deacon Shearer got hill Scripture teach ings out of the 46 Vinegar Bible," (the one where vineyard is misprinted vinegar, which a good many people seem. to have adopted as the true reading.) —There are no better maxims for ladies who give tea.parties than these: Cream is thicker than water. Large heart never loved little cream-pot. —Doctors are the beet natured people in the world, except when they get fighting with each other. —Men are tattooed with their special beliefs like so many South Sea Islanders; but a real human heart, with divine love in it, beats with the same glow under all earth's thousand tribes. —lt makes men imperious to sit on a horse; no luau governs his fellows so well as from this living throne. And so, from Marcus Aurelius in Roman bronze, down to the "man on horse back" in General Cushing's prophetic Speed', the saddle has always been the true seat of em pire- —.The great and good Itmrhaave used to say, as I remember very well, that the poor were his bast patients ; for God was their paymaster. But everybody is not as patient as Boorhaave, nor as deserving ; so that the rich, though not, perhaps, the best patients, are good enough for common practitioners. I suppose Boerhaave put up with them when he could not get poor anes, as he left his daughter two millions of boring when he died. —Oh, yes! country doctor—half a dollar a visit—ride, ride, ride, all day—ride again ten miles in a snow storm, shake powders out of two phials, (puts. gliscrrhir. pulv. gum, acac, as partes equales,) ride back again, if you don't happen to get stuck in a drift—no home, no peace, no continuous meals, no unbroken sleep, no Sunday, no holiday, no social intercourse, but one eternal jog, jog, jog, in a eulkey, until you feel like the mummy of an Indian who had been buried in a sitting posture, and was dug spa hundred years afterwards —A British captain was struck by a can non ball on the head, just as he was giving an order at the battle of the Nile. Fifteen months afterwards he was trepanned at Green w i c h Hospital, having been insensible all that time. Immediately after the operation his conscious ness returned, and be at once began carrying Out the order he was giving when the shot struck him OLDIES. —I have confidence in young men who believe in themselves, and are accustomed to rely on , their resources from an early period. When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the World, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it come off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away timid adventurers. I have seen young men more than once, who came to a great city without a single friend, support themselves and pay for their educatio n , lay up money in a few years, grow rich enough to travel, and establish themselves in life, without ever asking a dollar of any person which they had not earned. But these are exceptional eases. There are horse-tamers 'born so, we all know ; there are women-tamers who bewitch the Sex as the pied piper bedeviled the children of Hamelin; and there are world turners, who can make any community, even a Yankee one, get down and let them jump on its back as easily as Mr. Rarey saddled Cruiser.
