rzn There died recently in Paris a gallant soldier, a Marshal of France, who may be taken as a fair type of the French officer of the present day. Pierre Francois Joseph Bosquet missed a singularly adventurous life—a life of camps, boudoirs and gambling tables. He was in his prime the handsomest man in the French army. He was the most reckless gambler, the moat profligate roue, one of the most skillful swords men in his regiment, and one of the bravest. He was always occupqa either by duels, fight ing Arabs or making love. Twenty campaigns endured in Africa gained him reputation and rank. From a Lieutenant of Artillery he rose, step by step and by force of merit, to the post of General. When the Crimean war broke out he was at the head of a division of infantry, and displayed talents and qualities which rendered him conspicuous among the host of French warrior chiefs... It was rumored that the Em peror feared his popularity and was jealous of it; for knowing him to be the most sagacious officer in his army he suffered Canrobert and Pelissier to be appointed over him. Bosquet was a laughing, good inimored fellow, and took his fate kindly. Adored by his soldiers, in favor with all his brother officers, and satisfied with the renown he was gaining, he could sub mit to a temporary mortification. The coarse, unprincipled and depraved St. Arnaud—that man of iron nerve, who almost died in his sad dle rather than yield to disease—loved Bosquet like a brother. The two were inseparable, and were members of the famous group of viveurs who, when Louis Napoleon was President, gathered around him for orgie and conspiracy. Bosquet lost his best friend when St. Arnaud died, though the battle of the Alma was a ex ploit more friendly to him than any Marshal, for it sent his name triumphantly to Paris, Where he was lauded as a hero. At Ink ermann he distinguished himself by his generalship and his courage. They say, regardless of his rank, he dashed into the fight with the ardor of a subaltern. His glittering sabre strewed the ground with corpses, and his men cheered in a frenzy of excitement at the daring of their chief. Bosquet's succor to Lord Raglan's troops in a moment of peril, rendered him a favorite with the English army. Parliament voted him formal thanks for this exploit, and the Sultan decorated him with the order of the Medjidie of the first class—an honor accorded before only to sovereigns and princes of the blood. - Bosquet was at the Mamelon 'Vert and at the taking of Malakoff, fighting always in the bloodiest manner. It was said of him, like St- Arnaud, that he grew crazy at the sight and smell of blood, and woe then to the man within reach of his sabre. When he went - Mick to France the Emperor could not avoid taking marked notice of him. He was succes eively made Senator, Marshal of France, Knight of the Bath (in England) and Knight of the Legion of Honor. His honors were rich and plenty. They gave him a royal income, and like a rollicking soldier he spent it. Bosquet's equipages, Bosquet's dinners and Bosquet's amours were the talk of all Paris. His bear ing was a fine one, the rough experience of camps had given him a manly grace, and in the prime of life he teemed determined to drain the cup of pleasure in the capilal to the dregs. There were rumors in the clubs of the sad and profligate revels which Bosquet, the Em. peror and the Count de Fleury held at St. Cloud palace. Bosquet's name was on every tongue. He was a vrai lion. One bright morning, how ever, his time came. He paid the penalty of his immorality, with his death wound. The bright eyes of the wife of a young inferior offi cer had attracted him, and his prestige, his chivalric, generous ways, his gallant, military presence proved a poor lady's ruin. Discov ered by the outraged husband, he was not al lowed time to defend himself, and, helpless and unarmed, he received the avenging sword blade deep in his breast. The warm blood nearly spurted forth the gay Marshal's life, but finally the wound was staunched, and a suffering, almost dying man, he was conveyed to his own residence. The story was hushed as winch as possible. A duel, &c., were given as the cause of his illness, but soon the entire ad venture became known, and the clubs chat tered. and gossiped freely about it. The Em peror protected the young officer at Bosquet's request. He went through a mock trial, and was acquitted. In the Italian war, recently, he served with distinction. All this time— nine weary months—Bosquet lingered on, day after day, his wound slowly killing him. Stretched on a sick hod, the once dashing offi cer must have indulged in sad reflections. They say he prayed, and prayed for death. Probably nobody thought of offering him the consolations of religion—how they sneer at those things there—though the woman for whom he was dying and an affectionate sister gave him every sympathy and care, Finally, the spirit fled, and at the age of 51, the hero Bosquet is honored by a gorgeous, imposing funeral. What a lamentable finale, and isn't the whole career peculiarly French?—Boston Post. ST-ea—The Paris papers publish a telegram from Constatinople, dated February 2, announ 7 cing that the European Commission at Beyrout had proposed to establish in Syria ono sole government for the Christian inhabitants, under the protection of the European Powers. Ac cording to the same telegram, the Porte had proposed the establishment of two Governments, with general councils composed of Christian and Mussulman members. A letter from Alexandria, dated the 12th of January, conveys important news from Syria. It states that a fresh massacre of Christians by Druses has been perpetrated. The number of victims is not given, nor the name of the village in which the alleged massacre took place. We are merely told that while the inhabitants of a village on Mount Lebanon were attending ser vice in a church, a band of Druses burst into the sacred edifice and horribly massacred them. On the receipt of the news, Fund Pacha, the letter adds, immediately dispatched a body of troops to the place, who surrounded the village and took some 950 of the Druses prisoners, and they . are sail. to be now under trial at Beyrout. A PROSPECTIVE STAMPEDE.—Private advices from different parts of the State inform us that a large number of our largest slaveholders are already making preparations for an exodus, which they consider may be rendered neces sary as well by the dilatory action of the con vention now assembled, as by final submission on the part of the convention. When this pros pective stampede shall once become present and actual, none can predict the extent to which it will be carried. Some opine that some of our largest and most flourishing agricultural dis tricts will be left as desolate as the wilderness of Jamaica. Even if it shall fall far short of this, it will still involve incalculable damage to our interests. These large slaveholders com prehend a large quota of the *Sty flower of our population—representing much of the wealth, talent, virtue and commanding influence of the State. They will carry away from tie what is far more valuable to the State than property— thousands and tens of thousands of busy hands, w hi c h now constitute the productive 1 44 r of the State.—Riehmomf Enquirer.
