Will' Ma. LINCOLN WENT TO WASHINGTON ON
FRIDAY NIGHT.—We have it in our power to state
positively why Mr. Lincoln went off so suddenly to
Washington from Harrisburg. The stories of the
Peace Conference, of anticipated assassination, and
of desiring to avoid the fatigue of receptions, &c.,
are all bosh. His real object was to get to the
White House early on Saturday morning, so as to
have an opportunity of privately assuring Mr. .Bu
chanan that, in his opinion, the most elegant gar
ments in the world are those made at the Brown
Stone Clothing Hall of Rockhill it Wilson, Nos.
603 and 605 Chesnut street, above Sixth, Philadel
phia.
REMAINS OF A MASTODON.—Last September, in
quarrying limestone, in a gorge, about 16 feet from
the surface, on the land of Mr. - Eli Blackburn, in
St. Clair township, Bedford county, nearly the
wlicle skeleton of what was supposed to be a mas
todon, were discovered by Mr. John CaMean. The
leg bones were about fifteen or eighteen inches in
circumference, and the others were about in the
same proportion. After being exposed to the air,
the bones all crumbled to dust, except the teeth,
three of which were discovered. The enamel on
these grinders is about ona-fonrth of an inch in
thickness, and in an excellent state of preserva
tion; the balance of the tooth is petrified, and
much like soapstone.
MASON AND Ducon's Liss.—ln conventional
usage, "Mason an Dixon's line" is the boundary
line between the free and the slave States. Con
cerning the origin of that line, and its actual ex
tent, the following are the historical facts :
On the 4th of Anguat,l793, Thomas and Richard
Penn, and Lord Baltimore, being together in Lon
don, agreed with Charles Mason and Jeremiah
Dixon, two mathematicians or surveyors, to mark,
run out, settle, and fix a boundary line between
Maryland on one hand, and Delaware and Penn
sylvania on the other. Mason and Dixon landed
in Philadelphia on the 16th of November follow
lag, and began their work at once. They adopted
the peninsular lines, and the radius and tangent
point of the circular of their predecessors. They
next ascertained the north-eastern coast of Mary
land, and proceeded to run the dividing parallel of
latitude. They pursued this parallel a distance of
23 miles, 18 chains and 21 links, from the place of
beginning at the N. E. corner of Maryland to the
bottom of a valley on the Dunkirk creek, where an
Indian war-path crossed their route, and here, en
the 19th of November, 1767—ninety-three years
ago, their Indian escort told them it was the will
of the Sioux Nation that the surveys should cease,
and they terminated accordingly, leaving 30 miles,
6 chains and 50 links as the exact distance remain
ing to be run west and south-west angle of Penn
sylvania, not far from the Broad Tree tunnel on
the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Dixon died at
Durham, England, 1777; Mason died in Pennsyl
vania,l.7B7.
QUININE As A REMEDY you HEADACHE.—Dr. J.
A. Symonds, a well known English medical wri
ter, my§ that in respect to %km me di c i nes which
are at once tonic, anti-periodic and anti-neuralgic,
quinine appears to be, of all remedies, that which
is most extensively and constantly serviceable in
headaches, whether strictly nervous or neuralgic.
It at one time helps to remeve that irritable con
dition of the nerves, which makes them take of
fence at anything unusual in the degree or kind of
cerebral action, or at what is occurring in distant
organs, and at another time it proves subversive of
that very condition of nerves in which the parox
ysm of pain consists.
Dr. S. expresses the belief that quinine would be
lees frequently produetive of disappointment were
it given more liberally and more unflinchingly;
small doses will not avail. If the case be of re
cent origin, thee grains of quinine thrice daily
Will usually be a sufficient dose; but if it has
been of long standing, this quantity must be dou
bled, and, ill ems instances, ten-grain doses must
be administered thrice in the day. Many sub
stances may be advantageously combined with the
quinine in Order to render it more agreeable to the
Stomach, especially sedatives, such as extract of
hemlock and of hope.

POST MASTER IN HARRISBURG.—A few days after
the Presidential election, George Bergner, one
of the proprietors of the Republican organ is
this city, made an announcement that his name
had been mentioned in connection with the Poet
Office appointment, but that, under no considera
tion, would he be an applicant for that position.--
We regret that we did not save the paper contain
ing this emphatic declaration, at the time, for we
hf!!d a presentiment that the statement was false.
Meta, however, Were misled by the bombastic
ebullition of that patriotism which prompted Mr.
Bergner to announce himself as a private in the
ranks, without ambition to hold the Post Office ;
and many were induced to Asir the ehanee of get
ting it for themselves. While these things were
going on, Mr. Bergner did not come out openly,
and a c knowledge that he lied for the purpose of
deceiving his own party friends, and throwing
them off their guard, but, in a sneaking, covert
and ungentlemanly manner, circulated his peti
tion for signatures among strangers, who have no
interest in the appointment of a Post Master in
this city I He confines his operations to strangers
because the people of Harrisburg could not be pre
vailed upon to sign any recommendation in his
behalf. Of this we shall take an early opportu
nity to inform the powers at Washington, and we
shall do it in such a manner as to leave no doubt
as to the estimation in which Bergner is held in
this city. In justice to Messrs. Jones, Fenn, Ott,
Shoemaker and Harris, we are now making ar
rangements for a full, fair and unmistakable ex
pression of the Republicans of Harrisburg, through
the medium of ballots, in the same way the ques
tion has been decided in all the large Western, and
some of the Eastern towns.
Mr. Bergner has had his arms in the State Trea
suary up to the elbows for several yoßrs past, and
an audit of his accounts will show that he is sell
ing a great deal of stationery to the State at pretty
much whatever he pleases to ask for it, to say no.
thing of the printing of the Record, furnishing
Pardon's Digest, manuals, &c., 16c. Is it possible
that other, and more deserving Republicans, are to
stand back to shower additional favors upon a man
who has already made $40,000 by partisan fealty ?
KANT REPUBLICANS.
THE LAST OF THE SONS OF MALTA.--This order,
invested with such a deep and impenetrable mys
tery to many, appears to be "drying up" in some
places. In the New ,York Post of Friday, "it is
recorded" that the "ancient and honorable order
of the Sons of Malta," which is represented as be.
ing "ancient because the memory of man knoweth
not its origin, and honorable because the great
and wise of every age have been numbered with
its firm friends and steadfast supporters," came to
a complete if not inglorious end this forenoon.—
The furniture of Pro Pairia Lodge, the largest,
most thoroughly equipped, and most famous in
the United States, was sold at auction, under
mortgage, at eleven o'clock, together with all the
regalia and warlike implements which Mkt to have
entered largely into the initiatory services of this
mystic brotherhood.
The sale occurred in the lodge room, a spaoious
ball at 814 Broadway, the first floor from the roof
and the fifth from the earth. The hall was fitted
up in a peculiar style of elegance. The floor was
richly carpeted, and the room was surrounded by
long sofas, while the walls were decorated with 24
knights In armor, with tapestry, and with the red
cross of St. John, which appears to have been the
symbol of the Order.
The articles Sold wore elassihed as follows!
the useful; 2d, the instrumental; 3d, the orna
mental and mystical. Under the first head were
sold the sofas, chairs, ttc., one of the carpets con
taining three hundred yards, and selling for 75
cents per yard, half what it cost. Under the se
cond head were sold an Aletandre organ, which
was started at $5O and sold at $9O. Also, a Chi
nese gong, which, the "brothers" assert, was for
merly owned by the Emperor Chow Chow, and
which brought $ll. An immense tin trumpet and
a quantity of horns were also sold for a trifle.
Varier the third head were sold five "bloodless
swords." When the auctioneer reached these arti
eke, one of the initiated called out at the top of his
voice : "Now, let the etrenger feel the weight of
the sword! Now, stranger, be strong and brave,
and leap with all your might, for this will put your
courage to the teat I"—whereopon, those who ap
peared to understand it laughed heartily, and out
siders concluded that this must have been a part
of the initiation ceremonies.
According to the handbill, thee* swords were
"made of Damascus steel, and used in the terrible
wars of the Knights of Malta, with roast beef and
plum pudding, eighteen hundred yore Were the
Deluge ;" and'"were presented to Pro Patria Lodge
by Alexander the Great." Among them was said
to be the celebrated sword which was suspended by
a single thread. The purchasers, however, did not
seem to be impressed with their great value, for
the five swords only brought $5.
Then there were five terrible tin spears, which
were sold in a lot, for four shillings. Then seven
helmets, said to have descended from the Crusaders
under Peter the Hermit, with vizors complete,
were also sold in a lot, for the same amount. Then
came the mail and armor, which went on like easy
terms, five or six shillings paying for the whale.
Next were sold eight rusty muskets, with fixed
bayonets, for four shillings each. Several hundred
dominoes, with cowls, black and white, were sold
at twelve and fifteen cents apiece. "The Rugged
Path" was not sold, but, judging from its appear
ance, the "strangers" who passed over it must
have had a rough journey over the rollers.
After the furniture and other articles named had
been sold, the auetioneer withdrew to the back
room, and proceeded to sell regalia, which he said
must not be exposed to the gaze of the uninitiated.
The mystic volume, said to be a large octavo work,
was sold unseen.
The "sacred bath," however, was displayed to
the crowd. It sold for $1.50, and appeared to be
nothing more nor less than a large punch-bowl.
In conclusion, the "brothers" joined in a song,
to the time of "Auld Lang Syne," beginning—
"When old Maltesia first was born."
The crowd dispersed ; and thus ends the mystic
brotherhood of the L 0. S. M.
LOCAL BlLL.—Yesterday Mr. Boughter read a
bill in place in the Senate to change the place of
holding the election in the Fifth ward. There is
no school house in the ward, and, if the bill pro
poses changing the place to a tavern, we, as a resi
dent of the ward, shall object; and we have no
doubt but two-thirds of the voters would sign are
monstrance against such a change. We never
heard of any petition asking for the change.

PROF. WOOD'S RESTORATIVE CORDIAL is recorded
in the Classics that Psyche was once sent to a climate
warmer than the West Indies, to procure a sample of the
beauty if Prosperine in a box. After some delay the
men senger returned, and as soon as the lid of the b9x
was removed, out flew all the ills that flesh is heir to.—
Fortunatily, hope was found in the bottom of the box.
Prof. WOOD'S Restorative Cordial revives the recoil - c

organs of digestion, imparts strength to the nervous sys

LOOK TO YOUBSELF LV TIME.—HOW many, in conse
quence of a false delicacy, suffer from suppressed, pain
fat or obstructed menstruation, and think because they
are young that bye-and-bye nature will work itself clear
from obstructions, and all come right in the end, little
dreaming that the seeds of death are already germinating
in the system because the vital energies are" impaired,
and the entire animal economy deranged, debilitated,
and yet, careless of themselves as they are, if aremedy
were set before them which would restore all the func
tions of the system, and re-invigorate the body, they
would take it, and thuslie in time to save their lives.—
Parents think of thia, and at once give them a bottle of
goof. Wood's Restorative Cordial and Blood Renovator.
