This in early; but we scarcely need look for another hard freeze this winter. We may look for rafts next week. Enasx GROCERIES.—The attention of the reader is invited to the advertisement of Win. Dock, Jr. it Co., in another column. Mr. Dock's great 'busi ness experience is a sure guarantee that all articles offered for sale at his establishment are A No. 1. ThewM.usic.—Mr. Carter, the enterprising dealer in landed instruments, from a double grand:action piano to a flageolet, has placed us under renewed obligations by furnishing us with the latest pieces of popular music, to wit: "Through Life's Desert Lone and Weary," a ballad, by E. Clark, the cele brated trio, from Verdi's opera o f "Attila ;" "Sunny South Polka," and the old air of the "Blue Bells of Scotland," arranged for the piano. Mr. Carter receives every new piece of music worth offering to a discriminating public as soon as published. A Novel, Veratrnws.—We were shown, yester day, a novel valentine, which a witty young lady had prepared to send to her lover. After telling the story of how earnestly she reciprocated the fondness of her Adonis, she assures him that the only way to secure her love in perpetuity is to con tinue to wear the elegant garments made at the Brown Stono Clothing Hall of Roekhill dr. Wilson, NOS. 603 and 605 Chesnut street, above Sixth, Philadelphia. A New Jonneni—The proprietors have just purchased a new and splendid job press known as the "Improved Adams," acknowledged to be the tut piedit la use far hook and job work. By the aid of steam power, our workmen are now pre pared to turn out book and job work in the quick est possible time, and in a style of.relegance not surpassed any where. All we can say is, bring on your work, and give us a trial. Ilow TO dEr Riclt.-1f you wish to get rich, get married. When was ever honey made with one bee in the hive ?—Exchange. True ! But who ever heard of persona getting married to make honey 7 That article is manufac tured before the nuptial knot is tied. And again, who ever heard of honey accumulating in a hive where there were mote young than old bees ? Now, if some one will tell us how too keep little bees out of the hive, then we will admit that, to get rich, pt, mauled, and not until Wen, METHODS OF PRESERVING POOD.-0110 of the most remarkable discoveries of modern times is that of compressing vegetables for their preserva tion. According to this process, the most bulky, soft and succulent vegetables, are reduced to a frac tion of their volume, and are preserved in a dry, indestructible state. After boiling for a rather longer time than usual, they are restored to some thing of their original form and consistence, re taining all their nutritotto principles And much of their flavor. According to a statement published in the Comptus Rendus, as read before the Paris Academy, the vegetables are reduced seven-eighbts in weight, and proportionally in bulk. They re quire to be heated one hour and a half to one and three quarters, and on cooling are found to have rtgained nearly all their evaporated juices. RAILROAD AeorDEsrr.—We noticed several days ag o that a young man named Samuel West, brake man of a freight train on the Pennsylvania rail road, was killed last week between Conemaugh and Altoona. The Eveniag Gazette of Tuesday gives the following particulars of the accident : lie bad just prepared for taking his train, which was then being made up. While crossing the track, in com pany with a fellow-workman, an engine was heard coming spot; them, when West's companion cried out to him to leave the track. He must have heard this warning; but he did not seem to mind it, and ill en instant the engine hit him. Both logs wore taken off, or tattier the body was out in two at the pelvis. He was Conveyed to his lodging place, and stran g e to say, he survived several hours,-appa rently suffering but little pain: A short time be fore he died, be took' his watch from rhis•,pogket, and looking at it, remarked that - he ,Irad half in . hour yet to live 1 The engine was backing at the time, and was in charge of a brother-in-law of the deceased, who. is a " dispatcher" on the road, and had taken the place of the regular engineer, who was late coining on .duty that morning. The deceased was unmarried, and resided near Lock port. MAD DOG EXCITEMENT.—Every winter our citi zens are annoyed by a mad dog excitement; and we are in the midst of one now, which amounts to a panic in the upper end of the city. It is alleged that several days ago a dog laboring under unmis takable symptoms of madness took refuge under a building on the Ridge road, where he was shot.— Immediately afterwards, it was ascertained that he Lad bitten quite a number of dogs in the neigh borhood, which leaves a reasonable conjecture that ll° may have bitten others not known of. This creates well-grounded fear, that justifies every man in penning up his dogs or destroying them. But, rm twithstanding this, the very cry of " mad dog" raises a Panic that makes people fearful of walk ing the streets, and cautious about sending their children abroad. By careful attention, anything serious may be avoided; hut we say, once for all, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." One human lire is worth all the dogs that ever were Permitted to run at large, and we give this hint to those who do not wish to pnt.their own and their . eladdgen's lives in jeopardy—let Meal Make WM of it. No man who permits a dog to run at large du ring a mad dog excitement can blame anybody bat himself if the dog is killed. Self-preservation and public safety justify prompt action in matters tf this kind. MIDDLETOWN ITEMS.—From the Dauphin Jour nal of yesterday : Rcatival.—There is now a very interesting revi val in progress in the Methodist Church of this place. The house is crowded every night, and quite a number present themselves as mourners every evening. _Middletown Lreuna.—This association met at the N. W. school house, on Tuesday evening, at the usual hour. After the usual exercises, the fol lowing was offered by one of themembers: Resolved, That in the withdrawal of Messrs. Benj. Whitman and S. C. May, this Ideeum loses two valuable members, and it is with heartfelt re gret that we give them the parting hand, and that the best wishes of the society accompany them. The resolution was unanimously adopted. The question for next Tuesday evening is as fol lows: Resolved, That the Bible should be need as a text book in our common schools. Protracted Meeting.—Rov. A. Snyder, of this place, intends holding a series of meetings in the Bethel at Highspiro, to commence on Saturday eve in g; the 23d inst. flew Down.—Tho stack of Mr. Campbell's ma chine shop, on Union street, was blown down du ring the storm of Thursday. It fell on the roof of that building, and completely crushed it. Several persons were on the second floor when it fell, who narrowly escaped. A Regular Smash-up.—The lee on the Susque hanna commenced to break on Sunday morning, causing quite a noise and commotion in the stream. The ice on both streams is disappearing rapidly, and as it was broken into small pieces, it floats off easily, doing no damage to timber along the shores. Fire.—Several slight fires occurred in our bor ough on last Thursday, A building on Ann street, the property of Mr. Sheets, caught fire, but was im mediately discovered and extinguished before any serious damage was done. The chimney of a building on Main street, also caught fire, and threw out a heavy flame, which alarmed the occupants, and those persona residing in the immediate neigh. r , borhood, considerably. The fire did no damage. Son!ouely Injured.—Daring the storm of last Thursday, a man by the name of Laird, residing on Spring street, was seriously injured , by. the fall ing of a wood-shed. Late in the evening, while the storm was raging in great fury, he went into the shed, and when about to return, it fell upon him, breaking his arm, and crushing his nose in a shocking manner. He also sustained internal in jury; but he le MIT doing well, sod it is thought he will recover. The Fisherville correspondent, under date of the 12th, says: Yesterday, while some children belonging to G. Enders ' near Jacksonville, were playing, one of them, about five years old fell eff a step and dislo cated elbow joint and broke one of the bones in the arm. Next Sabbath the English Methodist Church re cently erected in this place will be dedicated.— Some clergyman from Harrisburg will preach the dedicatory sermon. Notwithstanding the warm weather, the ice still continues firm on the Susquehanna. Yesterday I crossed below Millersburg with a horse. Laet Week we experienced a terrible storm. It swept fences, barn roofs, trees, &c. We learn that in the vicinity of Georgetown, Sorthumberland county, it blew down several houses and barns Died.—On the 6th inst" Mrs. Nancy Strouse, of the S. W. of this borough, aged about 54 years. On the 27th ult., Elizabeth, daughter of Nancy Strouse, aged about 31 years. On the 11th inst., Jonathan Fisher, of Swatara township, aged 65 years, 11 months and 11 days. On the 10th ult., at the residence of his parents, in Falmouth, Lancaster county, Pa., Jacob H., son of David and Elizabeth - Boyer, after a short illness of severe cold and inflammation of the lungs, aged 15 years, 1 month and 24 days. LONGEVITY OF TH2 BRITISH PEERAGE.—It is not 0 little remarkable that the members of the peer. age who have died since the year commenced, 24 in number, have exactly completed, on the ave rage, the full measure of the 'allotted span of hu man life, the " three score years and ten." They are as follows : Viscount Arbuthnott, 82; Lord Lon desborough, 54; Viscount South well, 83 ; Vis count Gormanston, 84; Lord Oranmore, 72 . ; Bishop of Rochester, 84; Earl of Longford, 42 ; Baroness Stratheden, 63; Lord Fitzgerald, 60; Viscount Gnillamore, 27 ; . Baroness Wentworth, 67; Earl of Strafford, 82; Archbishop of York, 71; Lord San dys, 68; Lord Elphinetone, 53 ; Bishop of Wor cester, 77 ; Earl of Lauderdale, 76; Earl of Caw dor, 70; Lord French, 74.; Earl of Levin and Mel ville, 75; Duke of Richmond, 69 ; Earl of Man vent, 82; Earl of Dandonalci, 85. Total united ages, 1,880 years, which being divided by 24, gives exactly 70 years to each. This result, says the Times, it is to be believed, could not be shown among any other class of men in any rank of life. Mr. Joseph Allen, however, writes to that journal : "Permit me to enclose you the following ages of some of the deemed members of the Society of Friends, during the present year, taken from the obituary of the Friend, a monthly journal pub lished by that body- They are as follow, 84, 84, 80, 85, 80, 80, 87, 87, 89, 88, 89, 89, 91, 01, *l, 91, 91, 92, 92, 93, 93—making a total of 2,128 years, with an average for each life of rather more than 88i years. Fifty lives in the ISM period give 4,258 years, with an average of 85 per life."— Having seen the longevity of peers and Quakers recently noticed, a corr, epondent of the Times thinks it might not be uninteresting to add that of paupers:—" There• are at present in the Ratcliff and Wapping workhouses of the Stepney Union 69 inmates, whose collective ages amount to 5,538 years, giving an average of 80 years for each in mate; and 292 persons in the above-named work house:: of the Stepney Union whose average ages are 70 years." A FREIGHT CAR ON A SPREE—SingEtaT On Friday morning an accident of an unusual character happened to a freight train on the Penn sylvania Railroad, while ascending the western slope of the Allegheny mountains. At Lilly's station the coupling of the rear ear in tho train gave way, and being heavily laden with coal, it began to descend the slope, the speed gradually increasing with the distance. The car continued its flight without interruption to Wilmer° station, a distance of seven miles At this point an engine was standing on the track, heading eastwardly. Two railroad men were quietly seated upon the sow catcher, discussing the news of the day, when ther attention was attracted by the rapid approach of the car. They hardly know what to make of this singular visitor, but it did not take them long to make up their minds about leaving their com fortable seats. When they got out of harm's way, they quietly watched the collision, which was de. scribed as one of the hardest bumps they ever heard. The car was making at least forty miles an hour, and both the car and the front of the en gine were badly damaged. Tan WAY TO INCREASE BUSINESS.—We have never used any extraneous means to persuade business men that ther interests should lead them to advertise liberally, but happening to find the - following paragraph in an exchange, we cannot refrain from copying it. Those who keep an eye to the main chance always do advertise their wares and fabrics, and it is for those who don't that the following hint is intended : " The day has arrived when those who expect to do a profitable business must employ the papers to help them. Publicity must, be obtained, cost what it will, and the news papers offer the cheapest and most effectual way of walking into the pockets of neighbors and stran gers_ People with wall filled purses are not very apt to remember the petition, 'Lead us not into temptation,' when they read a well gotten up ad vertisement. They are more apt to rush to the store of the advertiser and buy. Customers, like sheep, are gregarious—catch one, and a long file of them come running along for their share. Ad vertise till you catch the bell-wether, and try it. In the name of the Profits—advertise." Tics latest invention is a sleeping car cap. I consists of a small velvet or cloth skull cap, or namented according to the taste of the wearer, with a couple of long straps attached to each side of the cap. When the traveler becomes wearied or. sleepy, he or she puts on the cap and attaches the straps, by means of brass hooks, to the back of the seat next forward of the traveler, and then leans back composedly, the head supported by the cap and braces, and sleeps comfortably as if reposing in bed. A MAN FROZEN To DEATH.—On Thursday night last a man named' Christina Rosenberger, who lived in the neighborhood .of Jackson Hall, in Franklin county, while returning home from 'a visit to town was frozen on the road near. Now Franklin. The man was seen passing through New Franklin late in the evening, apparently under the influence of liquor, and the next morn ing as Mr. John A. Shank, of Quiney township, was coming to town be found the dead body of Rosenberger laying in the middle of the road. H. B. Davison, Rsq , of Chambersbnrg, summoned a jury to inquire into the cause of the man's death, who found thathe had died from exposure to cold. Rosenberger was a widower and resided with a relative near Jackson Hall. • LABOR ARRIVAL OF Naw Gtoons—rhe Olteopes Goods Offered Yet.-2,000 yards Canton flannel at 10 cents, worth 12 cents. 2,000 yards bleached 4.4 muslin at 10 cents, worth 12 cents. 100 Pe beautiful new style print at 10 'tents, worth 12 cents. 50 Pe print at 7 and 8 cents, worth 12 cents, warranted fast color. 1,500 yards of un bleached muslin at 10 cents, the best ever made for the price. 1,000 undershirts and drawers at 50, 62 and 75 cents.
