Union to make money out of this festival, as it is

A Vsurasu ron IRON Wong.—To make a good

asphaltum,.and fame it in an iron kettle, then add
five gallons of boiled linseed oil, one pound of lith

slowly, or it will fame over,) and boil them for
about three hours. Now add one and a half
pounds of dark gum-amber, and boil for two hours
longer, or until the mass will become quite thick
when col, after which it should be thinned with
turpentine to due constancy.
OriumFartsc.—One of the curious facts revealed
by the publication of Custom House tables is, that
there was imported into the country last year,
300,000 pounds of opium. Of this amourit, it is
estimated, from reliable data, that not MM. tho 4
one-tenth is used for medical purposes. The hribit
of eating opium is known to be spreading rapidly
among lawyers, doctors, clergymen, and literary
mon, and enormous quantities .are used by the
manufacturers of those poisonous liquids which are
dealt out in drinks in the saloons and groceries that
Infest every city and village in the country.
ARREST Or AN ALLEGED WIFE MURDERER.—On
Wednesday a man named William Weaver, from
Bloomfield, Perry county, but residing near Chris.

December 24 his wife died suddenly. Three days
after the federal, be suddenly left Bloomfield, and
a girl mysteriously disappeared at the same time.
Other circumstances have since been developed,
which aroused suspicion of foul play. By means
of a post mark on a letter, Weaver's residence was
discovered. He was arrested near Christiana,
while attending a vendee, taken to Lancaster, and
placed in the couuty prison for a few hours. At 1
o'clock on Thursday morning, he was taken to

THOUGHTS FOR Wiwran.—The 'oldest spell of
winter is upon us, and there are dark days before
us, ere the summer, with its glowing skies and
golden harvest shall again gladden us by its rosy
presence. The bleak. February winds are yet
sighing summer's sad requiem through the boughs
of the moaning pine trees—even the holiday sea
son has fled, and we have come to the dark hours
of mid-winter, when not a bit of blue sky is dis
cernable overhead from the large piles of fleecy
clouds that hang their cold fronts low down upon
the horison, until they seem to girdle the hill-tops.
The season is to many, one of gaiety and pleasure,
and to many,-very many, most dark and cheerless,
entailing suffering and want. Let those blessed
with every surrounding comfort, and who live to
eijoy it, not be forgetfu lof those to whom the pre
sent dark days are, hours of fear, peril, want and
pain. It should be the season of charity, and love
and benevolenee. Those who have an *bandanas
of the world's goods, will find ample scope for the
exercise of all the generosity, mf which-they may.
be pesgessed. Gaunt want stalks around every
where, while the present deplorable state, of our
country is not such as to increase canfidence.or in
sure indemnity againt "hard times." There are
thousands who linter from the want of food to eat,
garments to wear and fire to warm. We may
strive to shut our eyes to the fact—we may strug
gle to convince ourselves that few, if any, suffer
we may reason ourselves into the belief that, there
is plenty of food and raiment for all that need it—
and there are plenty of places where they may be
got for the asking: But if we do all this we
.de
ceive ourselves, do violence to our better nature,
and wrong others out of the benefit of that benevo
.
lence which they. so much need, and which they
might otherwise obtain. The poor we always
have with us, and their necessities should not be
overlooked. This is the very Acuson when their
poverty brings with it its most acute suffering, and
calls for most active . sympathy. Let

Tan PazsmatEr's ROIITZ.—It appears by the
published programme that the President elect is
not to take Harrisbirg in his route to Washington.
This will be a sad disappointment to the public
generally, and to the office-hunters in particular . ;
who had hoped to get a favorable oppiirtun Ity to
present their claims without • the expense of going
to Washington. One W. S. Wood . , who appears to
be master of ceremonies, or bead committee.man,
publishes the route of the triumphal march to the
White Houseofter which it is announced that Mr.
Wood has made such arrangements as will insure
both the comfort and safety of those under his
charge. He has provided special trains, to be pre
ceded by pilot engines, all the way through.
Cards of invitation will be issued by him to all
participants on the journey from point to point,
and only holders will be found on the train.
State and local authorities and prominent per
sons without destinetion of party, will be invited.
To avoid crowding and annoyance to Mr. Lin

will be admitted in the different stopping places.
The Presidential party will be under the charge
of the local committees, and no partY coloring

has it that "a•prudent woman is!a pine of jewels,"
and, like many other Oriental. Sayings, this is •
l4antiful for the truth it embodies. A wasteful
