CITY Pemen.—John M'Cormick is a ladies' shoe
maker, and belongs to New York. The presump
tion is, that in these secession times the ladies of
New York retrench in that matter °taboos, in con
sequence of which John found his ocoupatien gone,
and started on a tramp, with his kit in a cotton
trunk. On Thursday he arrived in this place, and
being slightly on the genteel order, he went and
disguised himself with lager. In the afternoon
he called WWII the Mayor, and demanded a clean
shirt and a Glean pair of cotton socks. The Mayor
politely informed him that the appropriation made
by the city for the purchase of these articles, so it
dispensable to the comfort of the public in gene
ral, and ladies' shoemakers in particular, bad _run
out, but that be would give him a note to the trea
surer of the Wide Awakes. M'Cormick thereupon
became indignant, and charged the Mayor with
embezzling the city shirts and socks—in short, he.
became so abusive that the Mayor invited him to
his back parlor, until yesterday morning, when
they would debate the subject. In the morning,
however, M'Cormick wanted to hear nothing about
it. He was willing to let "bygones be bygones,"
and his special pleadings were for a release, which
was finally granted; when the ladies' shoemaker
shouldered his trunk, and again took up the line
of march. When he reaches the place .where they
furnish clean shirts and soaks we hope he will take
the same view on imparting Information as the
ohap did "whose sands of life were nearly run,"

originality. Re proposes, as a basis of- oomprc

from Maine to Cuba, and the establishment of the

This proposition may seem somewhat obscure ; but
