Lv Tors.—Mr. Harris, one of the Chicago de
tective officers, was in the city yesterday. Mr. H.

and has succeeded in bringing a great number of

“A CUING& OF MAKING MONST."-WO direct
the attention of oar readers to an advertisement
beaded as above. Mr . French's stand is an excel
lent one, and we know that it enjoys an excellent
ran of custom—but the proprietor wishes to engage
in another, and probably more congenial business.
An opportunity like this, where a man with small
eapital may walk into a business already estab
halted, does not offer but once in a great while.
JUST So.—A friend calls our attention to the
fast that books can be bought cheaper at Benjamin
F. French's bookstore, N 0.12 Market street, than
they oan be stolen from editors. We hope the chap
who stole our Sbakspearean Quotations will take
this matter into consideration.
We have no doubt that Mr. J. P. Beller, thd►

TON THUMB'S Eermauz.—The appearance of
Gen. Tom Thumb's equipage in the streets yester
day attracted a great deal of attention, and proved
a rare treat to the boys, some of whom followed it
with their school books under their arms all after

the ferrule on Monday morning.
The General held his first levee at Brant'a Hall

New Mosec.—By the kindness of the polite and
indefatigable Mr. 0. C. B. Carter, we are in re

Reportoire," by H. Alberki ; "Star Troupe Waltz,"
by A. H. Fernold; "Sig Ship Polka," by Gnert
Finn; and "Gems from European Composers."
Mr. C. is always up to time in the line of his busi

to remember the publishers of newspapers. He
deserves the most liberal patronage of the public.
lie has always on hand, at his store, in Market

to a jewsharp, the latest and beat manufacture,
which he sells at prices to suit the times. Give

deny its influenee, and as constantly wart its favor

than have ever been made otherwise by ability, en

A Work for Every Family.
Mitchell's new General Atlas for 1861, con
taining the maps of various countries in the
world, plans of cities, &c., embraced in forty
ttYon Quarto Maps, forming a series of seventy.
bir Maps and Plans, together with valuable
Statistical Tables, and sold only by agents.
This is Mitchell's latest and best attempt to
famish the American people with correct and
reliable geographical knowledge, and will bear
comparison with any similar work of the kind
heretofore projected; while its price places it
within the reach of persons of moderate means.
It is simply an Atlas with necessary Statis
tical Tables appended. lila gotten up in the best
style of map-working. The lettering is clear,
the boundaries of each division of countries
dietinotly marked, and the whole beautifully
colored.
There are two features in this Atlas which
are not met with in other works of the kind, to
pit: large plans of the principal cities in, and
a full list of the names and localities of post
Whets throughout, the United States. It is
needless to state the advantages to be derived
from the study of geography and the necessity
correct data, to aid us in acquiring such

THE RIGHT OF POTITION.—It is fortunate that
the Philadelphia members of the Opposition hate
a difference of opinion on some essential points,
inasmuch as the larious conflieting interests of the
party can thus be accommodated. For instance,
while Doctor Seltzer undertook to d-ny the right
of petition of white citizens of his district, Smith
of the Senate, and Sheppard of the House, rues's
slime this right in such a broad sense that both of
them presented remonstrances from the negroes of
Philadelphia against the repeal of any Personal
bihertv lawn. The right
of franchise is denied
negroes in the State by the Constitution, and the
Dred Scott decision renders it certain that they are
not citizens of the United States—they have
therefore no right to petition or remonstrate
against the passage or repeal of laws of any ttp,,
and it is sheer impudence on their part to send
any such dictatorial documents to the Legislature.
But, aside from this, the presentation of such
papers, emanating from negroes, as au offset to
the petitions signed by thy/los/HID upon thgguramic
of white men, is a gratuitous insult offered by
Smith and Sheppard to their constituents, atoi f r
which they will be held responsible, or we a e
much mistaken.
MR BENTON'S bill to aid iu the construction of
th Lake Oiitario, Auburn and New York railroad,
provides for thQ imposition of o-e-twsifih of a
mill tax for the years 1861 and 1862—550 000 of
the proceeds to be paid to the company when they
have constructed 22 miles of the road to Weedport
—550.000 when constricted to Annan], and ibe
batance of the moneys raised by the tea when the
balance of the road is .fiiiished.—Albany Argue.
There appears to be a vast difference bekween
New York and Pennsylvania in fostering and de
veloping public improvements. In that State they
tax the whole population to aid a local railroad
enterprise, while in this State, after private capital
has constructed a road and enhanced the value of
the entire State, the capitalists are compelled to
pay a tax for the risk they originally assumed !
Is it any wonder that New York is constantly in
advance of our State
GOOD ADVIOE.—GirIs, let us tell you a stubborn
truth. No young woman ever looked so well to a
sensible man, as when dressed in a plain, neat,
modest attire, without a single ornament about
her person. She looks then as though she pos
sessed w3rth in herself, and needed no artificial
rigging to enhance her value. If a young women
would spend as much time in cultivating her mind,
training her temper, and cherishing kindness,
meekness, mercy, and other good qualities, as most
of them do in extra dress and ornaments to in
crease her personal charms. she would, at a glance,
be known among a thousand—her character would
be read in her countenance, and there her beauty
will be found.
THE MERU OF LUNDY'S LANE.—General Scott is
one of the greatest men in the country at this mo
ment, and the eyes of all patriotic people are fluted
upon him in the present emergency in national af
fairs. The General has made all necessary ar
rangements to secure the safety of the Capital. On
the 4th of March be and President Buchanan will
ride together to the Capitol in an open barouche.
General Scott will not appear in military uniform
on the occasion, but he will wear an elegant imit of
civilian's garments from the Brown Stone Clothing
Hall of Rockhill & Wilson, Nos. 603 and 605 Ches
nut street, above Sixth, Philadelphia.
PERSONAL.—John Jones, as well as every other
citizen of the State, is informed that the best of
Cove Plant Oysters, linnet's Reading Ale and
linger Beer can be obtained at the Union Restau
rant, in Market near Third street.
AN INDLTENESiN —Our ft lead, John Pantie, will
have in market, on Saturday morning, a dressed
bear. Those of our citizens who are epicures, can
gratify their appetitei by calling at his stall The
bear will weigh three hundred pounds dressed.

and CAN SAY, IN CONFIDENCE AND TRUTH of it,
what we have never been able to say of any other medi

STANCE, TO EFFECT A CURE, when timely u.ed.
Never did we know an in,tance of dissatisfaction by any
one who used it. On the contrary, all are delighted with
its operations, and speak in terms of eommeudatim , of
its magical effects and medical virtue.. We speak in
this matter , 4 WHAT tVE DO KNOW," after ten y ari

This valuable preparation is the prescription of one .4
the most EXPERIENCED and SKILLFUL NURSES in
New England, and has been used with NEVER FAIL

THOUSANDS OF OASES.
It not only relieves the child from pain, hot invigo
