PARDONIID BY Tan Govisasett.—On Saturday, a
pardon was received at the Western Penitentiary,
from Governer Packer, for John Diplom, sen
tenced, more than a year ago, to an imprisonment
of two years and six months for assault and bat
tery, with intent to kill, upon Christian Klein,
proprietor of a lager beer hall on Smithfield streeb
Pittsburg, in July, 1858. The young man was at
once released. On Monday pardons were received
for George M'Kee, confined for highway robbery,
and Theodore M'Farland, of Blair county, both of
whom were set at liberty.
A Ifixam—lf there ever was a demonstration
get up of which the originators bad cause to feel
ashamed, it was the Wide Awake fizzle on Tuesday
night. We looked for a turn-out at least equiva
lent to those made previous to the election, but
the whole force of torch-bearers did not exceed
thirty I—at least, so we are told, for we did not
see them. A portion of the State Capital Band
were out, but not all of them—some having re
fused to turn out in consequence of the non-pay
ment of a debt of forty-five dollars due them by
the Wide Awakes. As we have probably seen the
last of these fantastic parades, would it not be
honorable for the Wide Awakes to pay their honest
debts t
FATAL TKIIMINATION.—The little son of daeob
Walters, mentioned in our paper yesterday as ha
ving been injured by being run over by a sleigh,
we regret to say died yesterday morning. The
accident is the more deplorable because the boy
was Mr. Walters' only son, and a general favorite
in the neighborhood. The aceident was the re
sult of reckless driving at a time above all others
when people should be careful; and it is certainly
a matter of congratulation that more accidents of
a like nature did not occur, when we consider the
crowded state of the streets all day on Tuesday,
and the furious rate at which sleighs were driven
through the them.
A WNW Way To PAY Oro Dzars.—During the
campaign last sammer,it may be remembered that
the Wide Awake. indulged in numerous fancy
night parades and excursions to neighboring towns
and villages, which seemed to imply that they had
a great many spondulix at command ; but it ap
pears they did not always pay cash for the numer
ous liabilities they incurred. They went on "time"
With the State Capital Band to the hots of forty
five dollars, for which sum the Band has been
waiting patiently, until they had almost agreed to
place the amount to " profit and loss," when they
received notice that their services would be re
quired for a grand torch-light procession on TU6F.
day evening. They—that is the Band—held out
the inducement that they would be on hand, up to
the moment the procession of a score and a half of
patriotic Wide Awakes were ready to march,
whereupon the blowers of brass struck, or, in other
words, intimated that inasmuch as those who
danced always paid the fiddler, even so was it ne
smeary that those who marched ahould pay the
musicians. The gist of it was that they wanted
their forty-five dollars. As there was no money in
the Wide Awake Treasury, here was a dilemaa.
But there was one bead in the party equal to the
emergency, whoever was the owner of it, and that
head suggested that the old bill be added to that
due by the State for 'services rendered on the In
auguration day, and all would be paid together.
What will the tax-payers say to being taxed
forty-five dollars to pay for Wide Awake music
This we fear it a game of "forty-fives" that will
meet the most serious objection of some people,
although everything has evidently been done on
the square.
RE-PRODUCING ANCIENT Martusertirrs.--Tbe fol
lowing useful information on this subject is taken
from the able Paris correspondent of the London
Photographic News : One of the earliest applica
tions of photography consisted in the re-production
of ancient manuscripts; but this application has
never taken the development expected of it. By
the employment of Colonel Sir Henry James'
method of since -photography, a sphere of the great
est interest and usefulness is opened up, which we
hope to see extensively utilized. There are nu
merous rare historical manuscripts, /cc similes of
which would be desirable additions to public libra
ries in all parts of the world. These copies could
be produced by the process of sinco-photography,
at au almost insignificant cost. A very curious
fact has been recently brought to light, whic h
touches the question of photography of the invisi.
ble, viz : that the effaced or faded portion of the
writing of old manuscripts is restored in the pho
tographic re-production. Thus the copy becomes
more legible and perfect than the original. M.
Vincent, one of the members of the "Academie des
Inscriptions et Belles Lettres," recently presented
to that body the firetfac simile of a manageript re
produced photographically by M. Silvy. It was
the Sforza manuscript, the original of which is in
the possession of the Marquis d'Azelio. It is
scarcely necessary to remark that all the designs
and ornaments of this precious work are re-pro
duced with marvellous fidelity. But the circum
stance that deserves particular mention is, that
certain passages which could not be deciphered in
the original old parchment have actu ally been re
vived. This is particularly strikin g on the last
page, where a note, written in German, under the
signature, has not only become visible, but legible,
while not the slightest trace of it can be discov
ered in the original. This remarkable circum
stance is thus explained by M. Piguier: On old
parchments the ink, under the influence of time,
assumes a yellowish tint, which often becomes un
distinguishable from that of the parchment, so
that it cannot be read without the greatest diffi
culty. But, during the photographic process, the
brilliant and polished parts of the parchment re
flect light much better than those where the ink
has been deposited. However colorless it may ap
pear, the ink has not lost Its anti-photogenic qual
ities, opposed to the photographic ones of the
parchment, and, thanks to this opposition, black
characters may be obtained on the sensitive collo
dion in exchange for the muck paler ones of the
originaL
Poraca ITEMS.—John Swartz was introduced to
his Honor yesterday morning as a drunken and
disorderly individual. It appeared that John had
invested all his available funds in "blue ruin," and
could not pay his fine. Remanded to the look-up.
Jacob Book, drunk and disorderly, was fined $1
and COSLS.
Martin austwiler, ditto. Pinta $1 and eons
Martin being ont of funds left a breast-pin and
overcoat as collateral, and was permitted to elide.
Professor Dailey, drunk and abusing his family.
Committed for 30 days. Second appearance this
week.
Jos. Oliver, Henry Hash, Henry Sanders, Chas•
Weaver, Jacob Walters, John Fisher and John
Morny, all in search of those "homes for the home
less," were voluntary lodgers in the look-up. Dis
charged.
Daniel Myers, from Mechanicsburg, was pinked
up, at a late boor on Tuesday night in a helpless
condition. The Mayor Sued him $1 and costs; but
his propensity for lager had induced him to invest
all his funds in that beverage, and consequently be
(maid not "sock." Daniel promised to reform, and
the Mayor discharged him.
Complaint was made against Charles Sellers,
Augustus Seeger, Joseph Ogelspy, Charles A.
Deon and John Woodward, for causing the death
of the child of Jaeoh Walters, in North street yes
terday, by careless driving, &o. Upon a bearing
of the case before the Mayor, the evidence showed
that the sad occurrence was accidental, and the
parties were honorably discharged.
Bun Ross was up for fast, furious driving through
the streets yesterday. Fined .1.5 and cost, which
be paid.
Win. Thomas Finley was arrested and brought
before the Mayor, on complaint of his father, for
drunkenness. Committed for 30 days.
John Carson, arrested on Tuesday by officer
Radabaugh, and committed for a farther hearing,
on suspicion for being a professional pick-pocket,
was discharged, there being — no evidence to hold
him. Jenkins, alias Walter Price, and Witman,
alias Mysterious Jimmy, were also discharged upon
a writ of habeas corpus, before his Honor, Judge
Pearson.
How TO Fume Roons.—Bayard Taylor's opin
ion on this subject is thus expressed in the Ade
peace!. "Far the finishing of rooms there is
nothing equal to the native wood, simply oiled to
develop the beauty of the grain. Even the com
monest pine, treated in this way, has a warmth
and lustre, beside which the dreary white paint, so
common even in the best of houses, looks dull and
dead. Nothing gives a house such a cold, uncom
fortable air as white paint and plaster, This color
is fit only for the tropics. Our cheap, common
woods—pine, ash, chestnut, oak, maple, beech,
walnut, butternut—offer us a variety of exquisite
tints and fibrous patterns, which until recently
have beon wh3lly disregarded in building. Even
in furniture we are juitt beginning to discover how
much more chaste and elegant are oak and walnut
than mahogany. The beauty of a room is as de
pendent upon the harmony of its coloring as that
of a picture. Some of the egliest and most disa
greeable apartments I have ever seen were just
those which contained the moat expensive furni
ture and decorations. My experience shows that
a room finished with the best seasoned oak or wal
nut, costs actually less than one finished with pine,
painted and grained in imitation of those woods.
Two verandahs of yellow pine, treated to two coats
of boiled oil, have a richness and beauty of color
beyond the reach of piginent ; and my only regret
connected with the house is, that I was persuaded
by the representations of mechanics, to use any
paint at all."
Tart GA.LLYANT WALTMA.N.—" Waitman, Fourth
and Market"—formerly—at present Captain of the
Washington Rifles, of Mount Joy, bad a street
parade with his company in this city yesterday
morning. The gay Captain handled his cheese
knife—we beg pardon—his sword, with a degree
of skill and energy that convinces us that he is in
earnest in his desire to raise recruits to fight the
secessionists. It is one of the glorious provisions
of our law that the kind of gas steak owned by the
Captain is exempt from levy and sale, and leaves
him in the felicitious enjoyment of a competency
that nothing but testing his courage can deprive
him of. Bo long as there is no immediate prospect
of war, there need be no fear of the Captain beat
ing hie cheese-knife—we beg pardon—his sword
into a pruning-hook !
As we said, the Captain marched his men in Lin
coln green trimmed uniforms around our streets,
and he honored the Telegraph office and the resi
dence of Cattails Eyster with three cheers each,
but he passed our office without so much as eon
descending to look at the big yeller sign I .Cap
tale Blower—we beg pardon again—waved his
cheese-knife triumphantly and looked over at us
defiantly when at Captain Byster's. • It won't do,
Captain Bologna. We have traveled some, and it
does not take us long to take the measure of a man
--cheese-knife and all. _

Simon Rrorne.—The following graphic and
glowing account of a country sleigh ride we find
in an exchange uncredited, but whoever the author
may be, we are confident "he has been there and
spent the evening;"
What pleasure in a night sleigh ride ! Good
gracious! Six steaming, spanking horses and a
driver furry as a polar bear, his nose just visible
above the dasher. Two or three dozen merry
girls and boys, muffled to their eyes, stowed away
with the hot bricks under the buffaloes. The ami
cable fight of pairs of lovers for the coveted "back
seat," where are no curious eyes to overlook the
young man who, tying hie lady-love's tippet under
her chin, ties his heart in with it; or tucking the
buffalo-robe closer about her shoulders, forgets to
remove his arm after the operation. hat plea
sure, with the warm blood tingling in cheeks be
neath eyes that flash like diamonds; what plea
sure, when snow-powdered trees, fences and houeee
fly past like magic to the merry sound of musical
bells—spelt with and without an e. What plea
sure, when the country inn is reached, where your
supper was bespoke the day before, and rolling out
of your manifold wrappers, you lift to your lips
foaming glasses of hot "mulled wine. What
pleasure, when we gather round the table, laugh
ing at each other's rosy faces, and discuss oysters
and fowl, and more "mulled wine," till bones and
empty glasses alone remain; and the waiter hav
ing cleared away the table, we have a good old
fashioned "blindman's buff," or an unceremonious
dance in our comfortable winter dresses. What
pleasure, when after being deliciously warmed and
fed, we pile into the sleigh again, nestling close to
the one we like best, and telling the driver to go
the longest way home, look up at stars that never
gleamed so brightly, and defy fate ever to make us
shod a tear for anything.
