APPOIRTRBRT.---WO are gratifica to learn that
Dr. William H. igle hes been appointed a clerk in
the post-office to fill the vacancy occasioned by the
resignation of Walter Whitman. The Doctor is
not only a sound Democrat, but be is fully qualified
To discharge the duties of the office. The only re
gret with us, and doubtless hundreds of others, is,
that his Democracy will prevent him from holding
the office after the "ides of March." No matter
who may be selected to fill his place, be will be no

Raawaaw AN A FAST AMERICA:4%—A large pic
ture in a recent number of Punch, is entitled" La
test from America," and represents the Prince of
Wales on his return home after hia American tour.
The royal youth bas suffered a change daring his
absence. He has became Americanized, and now
sits before the grate with his legs resting on the
plant.-1 piece, a cigar in his month and a pocket
pistol in his band, while a boa of fragrant Ha
manes is on a table near by. A sherry cobbler,
with its characteristic straws, is on the mantel
piece. The young prince wears a shocking bad
hat, tipped over on one side, sports a goatee, and
really loots like "one of the boys." In the back
ground stands Prince Albert, gazing on his son
with an expression of amazement, not unmingled
with fear.
LOOK OUT FOR Swnemarts.—There is nothing of
a general public nature ever takes place that the
sharpers do not turn to advantage. A few days
ago a doleful amount was published in the Phila
delphia papers of a compositor who had been em
ployed upon the Charleston Mercury, who had been
driven North penniless, on suspicion of being an
Abolitionist. He succeeded in creating some sym
pathy, and alto in raising the wind wherever he
made a statement of the wrongs he endured. The
thing was working well, and the fellow would, no
doubt, have enlarged his operations, but, fortu
nately for the sympathizing public, it was discov
ered that he had never been at Charleston at all.
The case of this rascal is not without its lesson.
We do not believe that a single individual was
ever driven out of South Carolina, or any other
Southern States, MOM fog uttering sentiments
both offensive and dangerous to the people. We
know enough of the southern people to justify us
in this belief, and yet we venture to predict that
within a few weeks a horde of swindlers will be
traveling through the Northern States, with plau
sible tales of wrongs suffered in the South for
opinion sake, and all testified to by certificates
from men of good standing We take this early
opportunity to put the people on their guard against
these pretended sufferers by Southern outrages.—
They are all arrant knaves.
" To Anus ! To ARMS ! Yn Baava !"—The Wide
Awakes being played out pretty mach over the
country, those who reside in this place have re
solved to change their organization into a military
company. We should have supposed that a more
appropriate and less expensive cnange could have
been made by turning the organization into a fire
company. The capes and torches would be to
hand, and we presutne a "mersheen" could be had
withont'much difficulty—Much less than the pur
chase of uniforms. The organ of these valiant
fellows claims that there are sixty of them. Be
fore the election it was claimed that there were
one hundred and fifty, so that we presume by a ju
dicious system of prunmg, the array of torch-bear
ers has been thinned out, and we doubt whether
all of the sixty—especially that portion of them
not born to command, are qualified to bear arms.
There is a material difference between carrying a
musket and a torch.
We long for the day when these valiant "bum-a.
biddies" - will grace the street 4 of Harrisburg by a
parade. They have doubtless given due consider
ation to the admonition of Hudibras—
•
• 4 tAti me, what dangers do environ,
Men who meddle with cold iron."
So they pays their money, and they takes their
chance. But, if we could only get a note discounted
for a thousand, payable on the first parade of the
Wide Awakes, armed and equipped as the law di
rects, we should feel easy for the winter.
MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCIL—Our eotemporary
of the Valley Spirit has a felicitous way of doing
up a local occasionally when the material is a
hand- In the following, while we cannot but pity
the credulous Frenchman, we find a vein of humor
which smacks of genuine "attic salt:"
About ten days ago a dapper little Frenchman
made his appearance in this place and formed the
acquaintance of a well known resident named Al
exander Kovilaski, a polish Jew. The twain seemed
to be well pleasel with each other and when the
timer forthe departure of the Frenchman arrived
Kovilaski's heart warmed so affectionately towards
him, that he could not think of parting with his
new-made acipSaintertee, and proposed accompany_
ing him to New York where the Frenchman was to
obtain the snug sum of six thousand dollars. The
Frenchman did not understand the language and
customs of the country, and Kovilaski tendered his
invaluable services to see that he got his draft all
right, in current funds, and that the pickpockets
and garroters of Gotham did not get him or his
money into their clutches. The parties had a very
agreeable journey to New York, obtained the money
and deposited it in a carpet bag, which was handed
over by the unsuspecting Frenchman to the sole
keeirin, of Kerilaski. They then sauntered around
the city- to see the sights, when Kovilaski, at a cer
tain point in theirjourneyings suddenly recollected
that be had some important business to transact a
few miles out of the city. Ile parted with his
French friend, and as a token of remembrance, in
case they should never meet again, he took the
carpet bag along, promising to return and meet the
Frenchman at their lodgings in a few hours. The
Prenehman'wilited a few days, but Kovilaski did
so t yeti:ma Re then posted back to this plane in
great per t u rbs** of mind to fled the misting man,
presuming that be bed returned to the bosom of
his family, bat he was doomed to sad disappoint

at all imprebible the rhe will keep so. The French
man la not so much concerned about th e money as

HORRIBLE CONDITION OF WRITE MARC—What
would an abolitionist, or indeed most pro-slavery
men say, if negro slaves were as badly binned as
are the white men who aro described, together
with their charmingly fragant and wholesome
residences, by a New York correspondent of a
Boston paper, in the following letter
What with the Five Points, Rotton Row, Meek
erelville and the Rook, our city has her fair share
of the plague spots inseparable from a closely
crowded population. There is one social ulcer,
however, whose name, " Rag Picker's ROW," "I'
dom gets into the papers, and whose nauseating
nastiness needs most thorough ventilation. Per
haps no locality in New York so urgently requires
purification, even though it be by fire. "Rog
Picker's Row" is a line of wooden buildings, two
stories high, with basements end attics!, running
along the rear of lots numbored 84, 86, 88, 90,92,
94 and 96 Sheriff street, on the east side of town.
The inhabitable rooms and tenements are occupied
by the lowest order of German gutterals, whose
pride and cleanly notions have long ago been ut.
terly squelched by close contact with sinks, sewers
and kennels, in their hunt for rags and bones.
In the attics are deposited the fetid bones and
filthy rags, in a reeking, putrescent mass, while
the yards are filled with dirty rags, hung up to
dry, whine stench is emitted, in truly emetic style,
for the benefit of the neighborhood around. No
great stretch of the imagination is required to re
lieve the visitor of his last meal; and few persons
of refined taste can conclude their explorations
without leaving behind them some souvenir which
shall be literally ventriloquial. The tenants are
of the dirtiest description ; their beds are as foul as
the floors they tread upon; their bodies bear the
marks of disease gendered by the miasma in which
they rot away their lives. About a hundred dogs
and cats divide with these biped pigs the miserable
existence thus dragged Out; the yards are 115 small
as they are filthy, and the sinks which overflow
into them are traceable even by a man without a
nose.
There are, in all, thirty-two apartments occu
pied by twenty-eight famll,es, comprising about a
hundred and twenty souls, about half of them chil
dren. The proportion of children is noticeably
small, from the fact that little folks do not, as a
rule, thrive on poisoned air. The ownership of
this eligible and palatial property is vested in two
men named Henry Greffelman and Christopher
Sneider, the latter of whom, although a rich man
and owner of the front building, resides with his
tenants in one of tho cesspool like apartments in
the rear. lie is a chiffonier, buying and selling
rags, along with his tattered tenantry.
It may be added, as an item of interest to those
investigating the subject of moral lodging houses,
that the larger rooms in "Rag kicker's Row" are
only six feet wide by ten feet long, and the bed
rooms less than six feet square. The rent of these
little dens is, however, high enough to make up
for any deficit in their size—the average monthly
rent being three dollars and a half per room. Not
to pursue the theme further I will merely say that
if there is a place in New York which might be
permitted to "seeesh" and "dissolute," without
provoking the least coercion, it seems to me that
it is this little colony of bone-sCraPers aid rag
pickers in Sheriff street.'
MEN OF GENIUS AND CONDON iTONESlTY.—Black
wood's Magazine has the following sensible ob
servations :
Genius may prevent a man from becoming rich ;
it does not prevent his being scrupulously honest.
Absorption in ideas, the pursuit of objects not in
themselves marketable, must of course limit the .
income of any man who earns his income by labor
of brain
.; but it does not screen from him the plain
facts of his position. If he is so absorbed as not
to be perfectly: aware that he has not earned the
money to pay for the sherry and mutton on his
table, he ought to be shut up in an asylum; and if
be is aware of it, but disregards it, either because
it vexes him, or because his sanguine disposition
leads hirtito believe that the money will be forth
coming "somehow," then we must lay the blame
on his feeble conscientiousness, not on his in
tense intellectual absorption. It is true that a
concentration of the intellect on any subject in
disposout if it dues nut unfit, 4 Mon for attending
closely to many other matters; though one may
note in passing, that mathematicians end poets who
could find no time to look after the small matters
of finance in their own families, found ample time
to look after the finance of India and the means of
defraying the National Debt.
But granting that genius incapacitates a man
from attending to domestic matters, we must still
assert that it by no means absolves him from taking
care that those matters are properly seen to ; he
may resign them into other bands ; and only 1)e
careful that no sophistication misleads his agent.
Ghirlandajo bade his brother manage the house;
for himself he would do his utmost to find the
money for it by painting. The same principle ap
plies even to men too poor " to live like a gentle
maii." It le but imperative on a Wait to lire like
a gentleman ; only imperative on him to live
honestly. If his genius will not procure him • the
"common necessaries," (which too often include a
host of superfluities, and sacrifices to mere show,)
let him earn those necessaries by some other labor,
like other men_ Spinosa lived by polishing glasses;
and small as the pittance was which this secured
him, it was enough for his necessities, and it pre
served his indspendence. When a pension was
offered to him if he would dedicate his work - to
Louis XIV., he declined, " having no:intention of
dedicating anything to that monarch ." It was as
eertained after his death that he had sometimes
lived on two-pence half-penny a day. This was
interpreting the necessities very rigidly; and al
though it is highly probable that, had he been an
Englishman, his " position in society" would not
have been very brilliant on triton terms, it le cer
tain Oar be would have troubled himself little
about his position in society, finding in philosophy
enough to satisfy his soul.
WOMEN KEEPING SZORNTB.—A new doctrine is
.being promulgated by All the Year Round. Hear
it: We laugh at the woman's tongue, and wonder
when a woman keeps a secret; but every true wo
man keeps a box of choice preserves for her own
private indolence. The man's mysteries are not
hers; if he cannot keep them to himself, letlim
expect theni to be blown abroad. Her own secrets
of love, of loss, of self-denial, of unspected suffer
ing, no woman exposes altogether, even to her
nearest friend. There never lived a husband happy
in the true love of his wife, who fairly knew all
the depths of her mind about him. Every man
profits stupidly by the wise little pexceptions except
in deeds, of which we vaguely ascribe the fitness to
a epecial faculty' called woman's tact. Women, in
short, keep to themselves four-fifths of the secrets
of society, and do it with a winning air of frank
ness all their own. A man with a secret will be
stony or portentoes, or provokingly suggestive
he will keep his mouth shut ostentatiously. A
woman is too absolutely secret to set up a public
sign over whatever may lie buried in her m ind.—
She gossips, prattles, pours out what she does nut
care to hide, with such an air of unreserved sim
plicity, that all mankind is mystified, and says, in
friendly jest, "a woman only hides what she don't
know." Among the uneducated poor this difference
between the Mullett and the wan is most conspicu
ous. The innate powers of her sex place her at
once upon an eminence which man can only reach
by education. She must often be tied to one in
whom there is often net the grain of understand
ing requisite to the formation of true sympathy.—
By far the greater number of the wives of unskilled
laborers and mechanics live more or less happily,
and more or less conscious of the hidden life within
them, having such a seal upon their minds and
heart.
CIIRMISTRY IS WAR:—Chloride of nitrogen will,
it is said, soon be utilised as an implement of war.
Its employment would be likely, we should con=
jectnre, to put an end to all war. Mr. Latent Bagge,
of England', in anionnoing his discovery, makes
mention of a system of ballooning advocated by
Kr, Sw um Kr., Bann proposer -to• carry up hie
composition in' ballooning, and drop it from the
air in the midst of armies and fortresses`, " The
very mention of the compotmd,"-he goes on, to. say,
"as a proposed element in modern worfaxes may
'-possibly provoke a, smile- 'siniong ohreml.th, rho

yet not ono of those chemists will be bold enough
to deny that, with two or three chemically clean
car-boys of this terrible compound present in a
city or fortress, homover strong, the slightest cut
tings of phosphorus, or a single drop of olive oil,
coming into contact with it, would in one instant,
decide the fate of the place and its inhabitants."
Mr. Baggy then proceeds to affirm that he "can
manufacture this deadly material with perfect
safety, and in any required quantity, and that it
may be safely conveyed to its destination by
James' system of balloons."

OIL IN SOMERSET COUNTT.—The Somerset Herald
ie informed on reliable authority, that oil has been
discovered at Ashtola, in Paint township, in that
county. Some persons engaged in sinking a well
had penetrated to the depth of about sixteen feet,
when water eoinnaeneoti coining in upon them.--
Leaving their work over night, they were surprised
to find in the morning a coating of oil covering the
surface of the water that had accumulated during
the night. A gentleman conversant with the oil
region in Venni) county has since examined the
premises, and pronounces the oil the same as that
obtained in the neighborhood of Franklin, and the
geological formation of the country the same.
