WHY DIGGEST THOU?—The following amu
sing caricature was written for an Eastern pa
per by a physician who wandered away to the
Pike's Peak. country and turned miner. It is
pretty good:
"Why Wilt Ye Dig?" Son of man: for the
light of whose presence my spirit yearueth and
my bowels grumbleth. (lost thou ask SIC 'why ?'
is it not written that fortune smiles upon foots?
And for the sake of all these smiles bath net
thy Servaut, been nr,king- a fool, yes, an ass of
himself, in vain ? For five years and ten days
he has sojourned in this place—he has dived
into the water—he has torn ancient rocks from
their resting places, and removed them afar eff
—he has likewise torn his breeches in parts
sot to be spoken of?—he has rooted into the
mud like unto a swine. Ms beard has grown
long—the skin upon his hands and his face
hash changed its color until he is now like
unto a wild beast. and his garments are red
and soiled, so that "sackcloth and ashes"
would be as fine linen and purple to him, Ile
who in time past was wont to fare sumptuously,
and to grumble over great delicacies which
were then piled upon the table of Dives, now
snuffs with gladness the fragments of pork and
beans, and gnashes his teeth impatiently over
a frying slap-jack. He bolteth a raw onion
with unspeakable avidity. Potatoe skins fear
his presence, beef vanishes from before him,
and dogs look in vain for the bones. In his
sleep, nevertheless, the good angel of the past
deigns to visit him, and delightful visions are
opened to his recollections, for a delicious bill
of fare floats before the mind of the dreamer,
and he orders oysters and terrapin for six, only
to wake up to get his infernal slap jacks and
molasses_
All this bath thy servant endured. Is be not
then a fool, an abomination in the very sight
of wisdom ? I must secrete myself in fortune's
path, and seize her unawares. But she glideth
off, so though I had caught a hog by his
greased tail. Sie transit, I exclaim, as with a
sick heart I revile poverty and curse fortune.
Surely he hath not sinned as other men sin
neth. He had not coveted his neighbor's ox,
nor his ass, nor his man servant ; nor his maid
servant—for be it known unto thee, that there
are no maid servants here. He hath abided
by the Law and the Prophets, but the profits
have not abided with him.
Now, therefore, I renounce these diggings—
I abequatulate the premises—l vemose the
ranch—l depart without scrip or provender,
taking no care for the morrow, for the morrow
takes no ears of me. Ere five days shall have
passed, the shirt tail of thy servant will be
waving in the breezes of the Nevada.
A remnant of it will be nailed upon the
highest mountain that he crosses, as an emblem
of the extremity to which a man may be re
duced in the land of Ophir. Yet think not, oh,
Elisha ! that I would rend my garment for this
alone. Verily I say Tinto thee, an evil genius
lath long pursued me. She has followed so
close upon my footsteps that every thread and
fibre of my old shirt are familiar to her eye.—
And if, in her pursuit of me, she should gaze
tarn fill this relic in the solitary fastness of
tie high mountain, she will at once recognize
it, and believing me to have been torn and des
troyed by wild beasts, she will retrace her
steps, and thus will I escape her.
As Moses reared the serpent in the wilder
ness, for the Children of Israel to look upon
and be cured of their infirmities, so will I
elevate my tin among the Gentiles, that they
may look upon and be made as whole. The
offerings of gold and silver will be acceptable
unto rue, and if they live not afterwards per.
adventure they may find a treasure in Heaven.
THE LANDLORD'S APPRECIATION OP MUSK.—
gentleman and lady were traveling in Michi
gan, and having missed the stage, were com
pelled to take a private conveyance front the
town of Seuderi to Thomastown • The lady
had with her a beautiful tap dog, which she
carried in her lap on an embroidered mat.—
During the ride the hutband diSOYered that
he had no handkerchief, when the lady lynt
him her's, which was fashionably scented with
musk. About half way between the two towns
the carriage broke down, in the midst of a hard
rain, axi they were obliged to take refuge in the
half way hoeste—a imne horse" log tavern,
consisting of two rooms—a bar room and
lodging room. The lady laid her lap dog on
its mat before the fire, and herself and husband
took Stal.S. ID a short time the gentleman had
occasion to use his handkerchief, and took it
out, I. aving it on his knee when he got through
with it. In a few moments the landlord opened
the door, put his head in, looked around, went
out, Came in, gazed at the dog—his nostrils ail
the time up-turned in intense disgust. Ile
finally appeared satisfied, went to the outside
door, opened it, came hack with a hound, seized
the lap dog by the tail, and burled him howling
through the open door full ten rode into the
forest. The wife fainted; the husband rose to
his feet, terribly enraged, and wanted to know
what he did that for?
" That's my dog, " continued he, furiously.
"Dont care a cuss whose dog it is," said the
man gruffly and impetuously; I ain't going
to have no such bluoted omolliAg varmint
that's been fighting with a skunk—around my
tavern!"
The husband and wife vacated the house
instantly, and proceeded on their way in the
rain, with the fragments of their ill-used dog,
who had got. into such "bad odor."
ABORIGINAL RELIGION—Burning the Dead.—
The Indians of California burn their dead.—
They do this from religious convictions, They
believe in a vast and pleasant camping ground
somewhere westward, where Indians live to
gether in perpetual ease and plenty, and which
is presided over by a great spirit of unspeaka
ble goodness. They believe, also, in an evil
spirit, who is Constantly watching every oppor
tunity to injure them, and who, having the
power to keep them out of Heaven, it is their
duty, by conciliation or stratagem, to thwart.
They believe, also, that the heart is immortal;
that while the body is burning, the heart leaps
out, and if by noises or motions they can at
tract the evil spirit's attention, the heart es
capes to its heaven of rest, and is forever safe ;
but if the body is buried, the evil one keeps
continual guard over the grave ; and when the
heart would escape, it is made prisoner, and
it is thenceforth employed to annoy tho living
relatives.
When an Indian is known to be dying, his
head is lifted gently upon the lap of some rela
tive, and his eyes softly closed ; while those
who are standing around, recite in a low mo•
notorious chant the virtues of the dying. The
moment his heart has ceased to beat, the sad
tidings are conveyed to his relatives, and the
low chant is changed to mournful wailing, and
beating upon their chests, with streaming eyes,
they apostrophize the spirit of the departed.
A Drsennumoisc, CoLaxm..—When the Uni
ted States army started for Utah there was a
scarcity of transportation, or, in other words,
there were too few baggage wagons_ Now every
soldier knows how like the apple of one's eye
are these same baggage wagons, drawn as they
are by six mules, on the long marches across
the plains.
A colonel of dragoons. who had command of
Ofle of the columns, restricted the officers very
much in their allowance of baggage. and was
Blest bitter if any one tried to exceed the just
Amount.
One morning the colonel met one of hie cop-
WWI (a dragoon, of count) when he burst out
as follows:
" Captain, do you know what these artillery
officers want to take across the plains ?"
"No, Colonel, I do not.," said the Captain,
with an inquiring look.
4 , Well," said he, "if you'll believe ins,
there's one of 'eat wants to take across a box
of books."
"Naar exclaimed the captain; is what
next I wonder r Now, colonel, I have but little
to take across myself—nothing, in fact, but a
barrel of whisky."
"Of course, captain, of course; anythingin
reason; but the idea of carrying a parcel of
books across the stretch is a little more than I
can stand."

pression of spirits or acerbity of temper. In most instan •
ces the pain is in the front of the bead, over one or both
eyes, and sometimes provoking vomiting; under this class
may also be named Neuralgia.

attempted not only to imitate his restorative, but pro
fen to have discovered something that would produce
results - identical; but they have all come awl g.irie, be
ing carried away by the wonderful results of Professor
Wood's preparation, and have been forced to leave the
field to its resistless sway. Read the following :

PROF. 0. J. WooD & Co.: Gents :,-.The letter I wrote
you in 1856 concerning your valuable Nair Restorative,
and which you have published in this vicinity , and else
where, has given rise to numerous enquiries touching
the facts in the case. The enquiries are,
first, is it a
fact of my habitation and name, as stated in the com
munication; second, is it true of all therein contained;
third, does my hair still continue to be in good order and
of natural color? To all I can and do answer invariably
yea. My hair ill even better than in any stage of my life
for 40 years past, more soft, thrifty, and better colored;
the same is true of my whiskers, and the only cause why
it is not generally true, is that the substance is washed

used by wiping the face in close connection with the
whiskers, the same result will follow as the hair. I
have been in the receipt of a greet nareber of letters from
all parts Of New England, asking me if my hair still
continues to be good ; as there is so much fraud in the
manufacture and sale of various compounds as well as
this, it has, no doubt, been basely imitated, and been
used, not only without any good effect but to absolute
injury. I have not used any of your Restorative of any
account for tome months, and yet my hair is as
, good as
ever, and hundreds Have examined it with surprise, as I
am now 61 years old and act a gray hair in my head or on
my face; and to prove this fact, I send you a lock of my
hair tiken off the past week. I received your favor of
two quart bottles last summer, for which I am very
