Gen. Krum—By reference to our tele-'

WE notice that the express wagons are
crowded, daily, with boxes en route for the
army. The boxes are filled with articles suit
able for holiday dinners, which the brave
boys will doubtless enjoy to the fullest ex
tent. Let the boys know that their friends
at home care for them.
THE GOOD Worm CONTINUES.—The revivals
in the Ridge Road M. E. Church, and Salem
Church on North street, are still in progress,
and are increasing in interest. Many per
sons have professed conversion. May the
good work continue. It was needed, and its
continuance would accomplish a great amount
of good.
GRAND DISPLAY. —Among the business
items will be found the card of Mrs. Mayer,
who announces that she will sell goods at city
wholesale rates until the first of January,
when an inventory will be taken, as usual.
The assortment of furs is one of the most ele
gant in the city, and the variety of bonnets,
cloaks, circulars, trimmings, etc., for the la
thes cannot be surpassed. Great bargains
may be had, and those desiring to purchase
should go to Mayer's.
FIRING 0* THE SENTINEL AT THE ARSENAL.--
Early yesterday morning, as one of the sentries
at the arsenal was making his usual round, and
w hen at the northeast corner he observed a
man crouching along side of the fence of the
public grounds. The sentry challenged him,
when the individual responded by discharging
a rev olver at him, firing two shots in quick
succession. The sentry re turned the fire,
and charged at his assailant, who sprang over
the fence and escaped.

CHRISTMAS IS APPROACHING with all its plea
sant associations, and many persons are look
ing out for suitable presents. For our part,,
we have always been an, admirer of usefdt and
instructive gifts, amongst which we would
especially class books, musical instruments,
and all things which help to elevate the mind.
Song and music in a household hare a purify
ing influence upon the mind of the young, and
therefore every family should try to cultivate
this art amongst its members. We are led to
these remarks by having spent a short time in.
Mr. Knoche's establishment, in Market street,
where we saw a magnificent assortment of
Cabinet Organs, Pianos,Melodeona and smaller
musical instruments ; also, musical works,
which should be in the hand of every Pianist.
Besides these, he keeps a splendid assortment
of Photographic Albums, Paintings, Pictures
and oval and square frames, and we advise
our readers who are in want of any of these
articles for gifts, to give Mr. K. a call. He
surely can suit them.
LITTLE BAREFOOT. —This beautiful domestic
drama, one of the best ever placed upon the
stage, will be performed this evening, at
House's Theatre. The occasion has been set
apart for the farewell benefit of Miss Fanny
B Price, who will appear in her personation
of AMR'. We think it is the perfection of
acting to see this young lady in this charac
ter, because she has brought it so near to nu- .
tore that she loses her own identity and be
comes imbued with the true and pure attri
butes of the part as depicted so faithfully by
the dramatist.
Mr. Rouse will appear as Little Jimmy, and
Mr. Meeker as William Peace. This is one
of the best bills of the season, and worthy of
patronage.
.Saturday Matinee.—A grand afternoon per
formance will be given to-morrow, for the
accommodation of ladies and children who
cannot attend in the evening. One of the
best bills of the season will be presented.
Families, take notice and attend.
IMPORTANT TO PARENTS AND CEILDERN.-By
the following correspondence it will be seen
that a list of truant scholars will be furnished
regularly to the Mayor, by our teachers, in
order that measures may be taken to put an
end to the practice. Truants may find them
selves in the hands of the authorities if they
persist in idly spending their time when they
should be at school. Parents would do well
to see that their children attend school regu
larly. Read the correspondence:
MAYOR'S OFFICE,

To the President and Members of the Teachers'
Institute:
In view of the fact that our city is infested
with truant-playing boys, who vagabondize
during the day and depredate at night, I
would respectfully request that each teacher,
having the names of such upon their rolls,
furnish a weekly or semi-monthly list of their
names and residences, to be kept at this of
fice, in order that the authorities may assist,
as far as possible, in suppressing the perni
cious practice, and its consequent evils to so
city at large. Yours, respectfully,
A. L. ROUXFORT, Mayor.
To the Hon. A. L. Biumfort, Mayor of the

U Vi HUM IT MAN CONCERN.
Owing to the constantly increasing demand
for his Hair Restorative, Prof. Sibbet.has been
induced to remain in Harrisburg until Tues
day noon of next week; positively no longer. —
There are now a great many of our citizens
who have been using the Professor's Restora
tive for some time, and they unite in one
common testimonial, as to its efficiency in
cleansing the scalp from dandruff, enlivening
the hair and arresting it from falling off.—
This result secured, the hair must rapidly grow
and thicken; it cannot be otherwise. Persons
who have not as yet called on Mr. S., can still
have this further opportunity. He saye that
he can convince the judgment of any one by
a process of reasoning, whose correctness all
will acknowledge, that the hair can be restored
when the glands of the scalp are not entirely
disorganized. This Restorative as a dressing
for the hair is pronounced to be superior to
anything now before the public, being entirely
free from oil or any other injurious property,
and as a Restorative it speaks for itself. It
has never been known to fail. decls-d2t

HARRISBURG, Feb. Bth, 1864.
C.A. Bannvkuz-Dear Sir: I have used Brown's
Bronchial Troches, Wistar's Lozenges, and
other preparations for hoarseness and throat
troubles, and, in comparisen with them all,
can cheerfully commend your own as a most
admirable specific for public speakers and
singers, in cases of hoarseness, coughs and
colds. I have found them serving in time of
need, most effectually.
Yours truly, T. H. ROBINSON,

To 0. A. BaNsvAsr—Dear Sir: In the habit
of speaking very frequently, and in places
where the vocal organs are very much taxed,
I have found the need of some gentle expdc
torant, and that want has been supplied in
your excellent Troches.
I consider them very far superior to any
Lozenges that I have ever used, in removing
speedily that huskiness of the voice arising
from its too frequent use, and impairing the
effectiveness of the delivery of public addres
ses. Yours, &c.
JNO. WALKER JACKSON,
Pastor of the Locust St. Methodist Church.
To C. A. Hilolv..sirr—Dear Sir : Having used
your Troches, I am free to say they are the
best I have over tried, and take great pleasure
in recommending them to all persons afflicted
with sore throat or huskiness of voice, arising
from public speaking or singing.

Dr. RAND'S SPECIFIC is exhibited in the
form of pills, made up entirely of substances
that have a specific effect upon the generative
organs. Most persons associate the idea of
operations upon the bowels from taking any
kind of pills. The SPECIFIC of Dr. Rand is
not intended as an evacuating medicine. Its
medicinal virtues are expended entirely upon
the impaired regenerative or g ans. The pills
are not unpleasant to the taste, and many
persons masticate them with impunity before
swallowing them ; which plan we would al
ways recommend, as affording the speediest
way to get the effect of the remedy.
