The War in Kentucky and Ten-
Captain Bridgewater, with one hundred and
twenty-five men, went into New Castle and
drove out Jesse, with a loss to the latter of
thirteen killed and wounded. Captain Bridge
water chased them through Port Royal, and ,
was only eight hours behind at that place. It
is thought the rebels . would be captured by.
Bridgewater's forces.
Colonel - Johnson telegraphs that the rebel
General Lyon's advance 18 moving on Russell
ville; His main force, twenty-five hundred
strong, is at Elkton.
The Yournes special Nashville dispatch of
the 13th says: "The weather has considerably
moderated. All our forts did more or less
firing to-day, but apparently with little dam
age to the enemy. Skirmishing between the
lines was renewed to=day with greater earnest
ness than for some time past. The enemy
yesterday fell back to his main line, but. to
day has reinstated the force in his outer
lines."
Dispatches fully confirm the success of
Rousseau's troops under Gen. Milroy.
Gen: Dates' Division is within two miles of
Murfreesboro'
Nothing has been heard from the rebel bri
gade that crossed yesterday at Cumberland
City.
A dispatch received from Rousseau says
Murfreesboro' is all right, and he expressed
confidence to hold the place against any force
the enemy has at his command.
The Democrat says: We are inforlhed that
Generhl Lyon's rebel forces burned the depot
and several sheds at Hadensville, on theMetn
phis Branch railroad, yesterday. A lot of
bacon stored in the depot, and a large lot of
tobacco under sheds awaiting shipment to this
city, was destroyed. The rebels aae conscript
ing everybody they can find.
Nasamms,Dee, 14, r. sa,--Yesterday after
noon a reconnoissance was, made by the regi
ments from Steadmares Corps, near the
Murfreesboro pike. Sharp skirmishing en
sued during the afternoon, with- no loss on the
Federal side except some half dozen wounded.
Deserters who came in yesterday report
that Hood had altered his lines somewhat.—
Later and more reliable information, how
ever, asserts that the rebel forces are still in
their former position. Hood has been re
ported sick at Franklin, with typhus fever,
but the reports are not credited. He is un
dOubtedly with his troops 'within a few miles
of Nashville.
A lot of Government wood was destroyed
by a party of Confederates, ten miles up the
river yesterday. -
A portion of the Rebel General Lyon's com
mand are reported to have burned some trestle

twelve miles above Springfield, Tennessee.
The weather is raodemtilag, and ,a heavy
rain fell last night. The river is eight feet,
and is rapidly rising. •

Mr. Sumner (Mass.) offered 'the following,
which, was adopted: That the President of the
United States be requested, if not inconsistent
with the • public interests, to furnish to the
Senate any information on the file of the de
partment of State, concerning the paper pnb
lished in the volume of treaties, and entitled,
"An arrangement between the United States
and Great Britain, between Richard Rush
Esq., acting as Secretary of State, and Cha%
B. Agat, his Brittanic Majesty's Envoy Extfa
ordinary, relating to the naval force to be
Maintained upon the American lakes."
Mr. Lane (Kansas) offered the following:
Resolvtd, That the Committee on the Con
duct of the Wax be instructed to inquire as . to
the truth of the alleged charges that large
numbers of disloyal persons are in the em
ployment of the Government in the navy
yards, quartermaster's and ordnance °depart
ments, Sce., of the country, to the exclusion
of loyal men, with power to send for persons
'and papers.
Mr. Lane : (Kansas.) I desire to make a
statement that was made in my presence last
night, before a large • assembly of gentlemen,
in a public speech, that a few days ago the
son of• a soldier Who died 'of starvation in a
rebel prison, applied at the Philadelphia navy
yard for employment, which was necessary
for the maintenance of the family of this sol
•dier who had died of starvation. He was re
fused, while at the moment of his refusal
there were thousands of disloyal men in the
employment of that navy yard. I make that
statement in the hearing of the Chairman of
the Committee on Naval Affairs, and call his
attention to it. • I ask for the passage of the
resolution.
Mr. Chandler (Mich.) suggested that as the
Committee on the Conduct of the War had as
much before it as it could possibly do, be
tween November and the 4th of March.
The resolution bad better be referred to a
special committee.
Mr. Lane said his object was to have the
investigation made, and the report upon Übe
fore the installation of the new administration.
It there was such an evil as spoken of, it
should be made known, and the policy of the
Administration should be chaisged in its in
stallation. He was one of the men who be
lieved that no government could be success
fully administered unless it surrounded itself
with office holders in sympathy with it. He
wanted the report before the 4th of March
next.
Mr. Johnson (Md.) did not know that he
had any more confidence in the Administra
tion than the Senator from Kansas, but he
had no doubt, the President would see to it
that the offices were filled by loyalmen. What,
ever might be saicLas to the loyalty, of„ the
navy yard employees, it was a fact that they
all voted for Mr. Lincoln. He did not be
lieve the Senate had any right to interfere in
this matter, which he thought was one per
taining to the. Executive department of the
Govenunent. Suppose the investigation
turned out as the Senator from Kansas antici
pated,, whit could the senate do? Nothing
but expOss an} Ppiuiuy which could have no
legal binding whatever "upon the, President,
and he might, or_ might not disregard it, either
because he 'thought it his interest to do so or

HOUSE OF -REPRESENTATIVES
Mr. Holman (Dad.) introduced a resolution
directing the Secretary of War to furnish a
copy of the order issued Dec. Is% 1863, in
regard to troops enlisted on condition that
they should be discharged when the regiments
were mustered out of service; also, the order
dated December, 1863, addressed to the Gov
ernor of Massachusetts, in regard to troops
to fill up old regiments; and, also, .inform the
House whether the prin.ciplestherein.an
nounced have been applied to soldiers mus
tered to fill up old regiments. '
Mr. Schenck (0.) objected to the consider
ation of the resolution, unless it was referred
to the Committee on Military Affairs. which
he said had that subject under consideration,
and had already obtained information on the
subject. •
Mr. Holman's resolution was referred to the,
Committee on Military Affairs. 1 •
Mr. Mallory (Ky.) asked leave to Offer
resolution requesting the President to C,Oril
wan loge all papers bearing on the arrest and
imprisonment of Lieut. Gov. Jacobs and Col.
',Watford, the latter one of the Presidential
electors of Kentucky; by whose order arrested
and where they are imprisoned.
Mr. Stevens (Pa.) objected.
On motion of Mr. Orth, (Ind.,) the House
took up and passed the Senate bill providing
for a speacial term of the Court for the Dis
trict of Indiana.
On motion of Mr. Griswald, (N. Y.,) a reso
lution was passed directing an investigation
of all the facts as to the practical operationof
the pension laws, a system of permanent re
lief, and to'inquire into the actual constitu-
tion of the present invalids, and what mea,
Sures should be passed to secure to them em
ployment independent of pensions.
Mr. Cox (0.). offered a resolution, which
was adopted:
Resolved, That the Secretary of State, if
not Mcompatible with the public service,
communicate to this House all communica
tions on file in his office with reference to the
diffculties upon the northern borders, and
which have been referred to the Committee
on Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Cox said this information was desired
with kyiew to some action of the Committee,
on Foreign Affairs, and for the elucidation of
the questions committed to them. ,
Mr. Blaine (Me.) moved that the Committee'
on Ways and Means be instructed to inquire
into the expediency of exempting sailing ves
sels of 500 tons, and upwards, from the two
per cent. tax imposed in the 94th section of
the internal revenue act of 1861. Adopted.

GEN. SHERMAN'S ADVANCE-CONSTERNATION AT
CHARLESTON-THE EXCHANGE OF PRISONERG.

The steamship Arago, Captain Gadsdin,
arrived here last evening. having in tow the.
United States gunboat Augusta, which broke ,
riovin while on the way from Port Royal. The
Ara& has mails, passengers and important
dispatches from General Foster, cpmmanding,
the Department of the South.
The latest advic from Sherman' at the'
time the Arago left—n the Bth instant—we're
that his advance troops, coropriSing mostly
cavalry and light artillery, had reached :a
point only forty miles from Savannah._ and
were steadily feeling their way towards that
city, with every prospect of capturing it with
very little loss td'his army. He had succeeded
in severing the railway communication lead
ing to and from Savannah, and had cut off the,.
most important routes of supplies for the
troops that were hastily assembling in the de
fence of the city.
The bombardment of Charleston has been
suspended, and Colonel John E. Mulford was
rapidly pushing forward his arrangements for
the exchange of the residue of the Union pris
oners in the hands of the Rebels at that city.
The most intense consternation is said, by
our men recently exchanged, to be prevail
ing, not only in Savannah, where the author
ities are hourly expecting to hear the • boom
ing of the guns of Sherman's vanguard, but
also in Charleston, it being with difficulty
that the excited feelings of the populace can
be allayed, ski' great is their dread that Sher
man may yet make the capture of this latter •
city the. object of his- grand campaign. The
exchange of prisoners is progressing very
favorably, considering the state of affairs in
Charleston, and no doubt is entertained but
that'Colonel Mulford will succeed in tibtaining
a sufficient,number of our men as will load
the remaining vessels of the exchange fleet.
