We notice that a few of our citizens permit
heir pavements to be covered with ice, thus
endangering the life awl limbs of persons
passing over them. Somebody may have to
pay damages to "somebody," if the ice is not
removed.

WE are informed that a shooting affair oc
curred at Shippensburg. a few days ago.
Capt. Baughman. (late of the Third Penna.
Cavalry,) attempted to arrest a number of
deserters, who endeavored to escape by mak
ing use of their limbs. The Captain fired at
them, and one of the party was "brought
down" by a bullet striking him in the rear.
The deserters were afterwards captured and
are now under guard in this city.

J. Walker Jackson, one of the most eminent
and eloquent pulpit orators in the country,
and withal a pure-minded Christian and an
earnest patriot, has consented to preach a
course of sermons to the young men of Har
risburg, the initiatory production to be de
livered on Sunday evening next, and to be
continued from Sabbath to Sabbath, until the
course is completed. The following are the

FALSE IrivoiuverioN --Individuals who con
oeive that the readiest and mostsimple method
of avoiding military duty is to furnish false
information to enrolling officers, are invited
by the Board of Enrollment to give special at
tention to the following order, paragraph 28,
revised regulations:
If a person, with intent to prevent the draft,
:oases to give his true name when lawfully
requested to do so, by an officer whose legal
duty it is o ascertain and enroll it, it is an
obstruction to that officer in the performance
Of one of his duties in relation to the draft.
So, also, of the giving of false names with
the same literal intent, and the offender will,
in either case, be subject to summary arrest
by the Provost Marshal.
Those who entertain the opinion that by
refusing to give information or by giving false
tatements, they can deceive the enrolling of
ficer are egregiously mistaken. It is very-sel
dom, indeed, that the officer is compelled to
rely for his knowledge of the civil status of
any individual upon the solo information of
the party concerned. The attempt to relieve

plea that the names drawn—furnished by
theraselves—Were fictitious or defective, has
Utterly failed, and if John Brown chooses to
give his name as John Smith to the enrolling
officer, he will simply subject himself to pun
ishment, without thereby escaping service if
drafted.
THE SPECIAL NCO= TAx.—This tax will
soon be demanded by the collectors, and the
Public should be in readiness to make proper
and prompt retains, under the penalties pre
acribed in the act. This tax, it will be re
membered, is the second one for 1863, and
amounts to an additional five per cent, on the
income. The first tar was but three per cent.,
and was paid some time ago. The intention
of the law is that, every man having an in
come over $6OO, shall pay in the aggregate
tor that year, eight per cent. No deductions
are allowed on the five per cent. assessment
for dividends or interests received from any
company . or associat oi. The fall amount of

A SPLENDID FLAG FOE THE SIXTY-FIRST PENN
SYLVANIA REGIMENT. —The 61st Pennsylvania
regiment, whose term of service has expired,
has organized themselves into a battalion, and
will shortly be again in the field. No regi
ment in the service has undergone more hard
ships or performed greater deeds of valor in
the field than the 61st Pennsylvania. Many
of the men belonged to the lamented Birney's
original regiment, the 23cl Pennsylvania. A
number of the citizens of Philadelphia have
had manufactured a magnificent flag for pre
sentation to the new battalion. It is made of
heavy blue silk; one side contains an elaborate
painting of the coat of arms of Pennsylva
nia, and the reverse a beautiful representation
of an American eagle. The flag contains the
following inscription: "Presented by the citi
zens of Philadelphia to the alst Pennsylva
nia volunteers, for gallant conduct throughout
the war." The names of the principal bat
tles in which the regiment took an active part
are inscribed on the flag; among them are
Marye's Heights, Fair Oaks, Washington, D.
C., Malvern Hal, Winchester, Antietam, Ce
dar Creek, Wilderness, and many o>hers.—
The flag is safe from dishonor in the'hands of
the 61st.
How TO CUT PORE.—The following direc;
tions may be found useful, at this season of
the year, to such of otir readers as are able to
"go the whole hog:" -
Have the hog laid on his back on a stout
table. Clean the carcass of the leaf fat. Take
off the feet at the ankle joints. Cut the head
off close to the shoulders, separate the jowl
from the skull, and open the skull length
wise on the outer side, so as to remove the
brains fully. Remove the back bone in its
whole length, and with a sharp knife cutoff
the skin—then the fat, leaving only about
one-half inch of fat on the spinal column.
The middlings or sides are now cut from be
tween the quarters, leaving the shoulders
square shaped, and the ham pointed, or it may
be rounded to suit your fancy. The ribs are
next removed, partially or entirely from the
sides. The trimmings of fat from the hams
and flabby parts of the sides are rendered up
with the backbone strip for lard. The sausage
meat is cut off from the leaf fat and ribs; any
other lean pieces are used for the same pur
pose. Tice thick part of the backbone that
lies between the shoulders is called the chine;
it is cut from the tapering bony end, and the
latter part called the backbone by way of dis
tinction. The backbones are used while
fresh; the chine is better after being smoked.

THE appearance of Miss Fanny B. Price at
Rouse's Theatre, last evening, was greeted by
one of the largest audiences of the season.
The play selected for the occasion was THE
CRICKET, in which Miss Price appeared in
her great character of FANCHON. The large
audience was charmed with her admirable
rendition of that difficult part; and fault•find
ers found no room for imfavorable criticism.
The beautiful play is exceedinly popular here,
and we trust that FANCHON will be repeated
ere the engagement of Miss Price closes.
To-night CANCILL.E will be placed before our
play-goers. Miss Price will appear in the lead
ing character, sustained by Rouse's star
Troupe. The numerous friends of the tal
ented tragedienne will be at the hall, in full
force. Mr. Hanchett, a very popular actor, is
also playing at the Theatre this week, and,
with Meeker, Rouse and a dozen others, form a
strong company. The present week is one of
unusual attractiveness at Brant's Hall, and that
spacious room will no doubt be crowded every
night. Secured seats should be obtained at
Banuvart's Drug Store during the day.
