DROWNED, —The body ,of Patrick McCarty, a resident of Millville bor.ougb, Cambria county, was found in the First Dam, below Johnstown, on Tuesday afternoon /wt. The deceased has been missing for several days. A NEW croasing has been laid from the Jones House to liryeth's corner. It supplies a want that has been felt by all of our citizens who are in the habit of crossing Market street at that point. There are other places in town where the crossings have almost disappeared. I=l Tow remains of Mr. James Irwin were taken to Palkesburg, to-day, for interment. The Ponesylvania Railroad Company furnish ed several spe, eial cars free of charge, to con vey the friends to and from Parkesburg. Mr. I. was recently an employee of the company. THE great drama of THE CCHIL43/GAN BROTH wiII be repeated this evening, at the The atre. A large audience was present Mat night, and an were delighted. The manager has been very fortunate during the present season, as the hall has been well filled every night. The entertainment of this evening will be the one hundred and third of the season. THE ladies engaged in getting up the Thihnksgiving Dinner for the sick and wound ed soLdiers at Camp Curtin Hospital, hereby tender their sincere thanks to all those who so kindly end liberally aided them in their efforts to cheer and comfort those suffering men, and made them • feel that though tar from home and loved ones, they still had friends who honored the brave defenders of the "Dear old Flag." PROTRACTED Marrrim.—A protracted meet ing is in progress in the Ridge Avenue M. E. Church. Rev. Mr. Hilinger is pester of the congregation. He is a young man of great ability, and his labors promise to be crowned with success. A number of penitents have presented themselves at the altar of prayer since the meeting commenced, and there is every indication that an extensive revival will take place. %toma GRAPES. —Some of the 2 ory Organs an Ws vicinity are indulging themselves in -advance, with flings at the approaching Legis lature, boLdly declaring that for all the good that is done by this body, "they (tories) would not care if the session were postponed until 1966." Sour grapes The Legislature in Loth its branches, is against the cops; hence, of course, it can do no "good "-for Southern treason or Northern sympathizers. =EC= THE steam cracker bakery of Jacob P. Haehnlen, at the corner . of Cherry and River 411eys, is well worth a visit. The work is .done with a rapidity that is astonishing. The machinery runs as regularly as clock-work.-- A large number of workmen are employed, and business is conducted on an extensive male. The attention of our readers is di rected to Mr. Haehnlen's card in another ncolumn. VoLItriROAD ACCIDENTS.—On Thursday after moon last, a man named Super, was killed at White Hall. A car loaded with lumber pass ed over hie breast, and nearly severed his right arm from his body, killing him in stantly. Jonathan flare, a brakesman on a freight train, was killed at the Gap, Lancaster coun ty, on the same day. From some unknown cause he fell from the bumper of his car, and a portion et' the train passed over him. OEN. BAETILea A. SZEAFEEE died at his residence, in Lancaster, yesterday. Deceased was well known here and throughout the State. He was a prominent member of the Whig party, And in 1851-2 was elected to the State Legislature. In 1857 he was sent to the State Senate. Daring the early part of the rebellion he was on General Keim's stall, and was with General Patterson's command in the Shenandoah. During that campaign his health suffered, and never fully recovered. 1:==:E1 GIUMBEESBITECF. —Letters have been receiv ed from some ladies in Chambersburg, who have been looking into the wants of the col ored population there, and they say their des titution is "appalling," in view of the ap proaching severe weather. We beg the in habitants of this city to continue their kind ness to Chambersburg, by sending to Dr. DeWitt's, Front street, between Pine and south, any old clothing or bedding which will be suitable to the poor people, and it will be forwarded immediately. "CITY" PASSENGER RAILWAY fl WILLIAMS POET.—The citizens of Williamsport, Pa., are certainly an enterprising people. We learn that railroad tracks are being laid through the principal streets of the town, and oars, similar to those used in Philadelphia and elsewhere, are to be placed upon these tracks as soon as completed. Williamsport is far in advance of Harrisburg in this particular, and bids fair to become a city at an early day. Harrisburg should have street railroads, and if they are not soon introduced the State Capital will be added to the list of "old fogy", TEE Secretary of War has fixed the mini mum height far the liiihmteer service at five feet, instead of five feet three inches, as here, tofore established. OF* THE Truck.:—The mail train from Pitts burg, due here at noon to-day, had not ar rived at the time we put our paper to press. We are informed that it was off the track, but would probably arrive here by six o'clock. ALMOST A FATAL CASE OF POISONING.—The family of A. J. Koller, an employee of the Northern Central Railway, residing in Shrews bury, Xprk- county, consisting of wife patd,th;ee children, were poisoned froth eatingcheese at tea on Sunday evening, the 20th ult. The cases would have proved fatal in a very short time had not medical aid been promptly ap plied. They are now considered out of dan ger. , A GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOP:BUCKWHEAT CAKES. To three pints of warm water add a dessert spoonful of salt, three table spoonfuls of good yeast, and stir in middlings (course flour) to the consistency of a thick batter: let it stand over night, and if a little sour in the morning, add a little soda dissolved in warm water, and make as you would any other pan-cakes.' They are a nice, healthy dish for breakfast and not so' injurious as buckwheat. Give them a trial and be convinced of it. Tan LETTER N.—lt is to be wondered at, after examining the list of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and finding there the names of Baldwin, Dayton, Dickinson, Franklin, Gilman, Hamilton, Johnson, Lang don, Livingston, Madison, Mifflin, Paterson and Wilson; and then turning to the Constitution and reading there the names of Braxton, Franklin, Hopkinson, Huntington, Harrison; Jefferson, Livingston, Morton, Middleton, Mc- Kean, Nelson, Penn, Sherman, Stockton, Thornton, Walton, Wilson and Witherspoon; and then looking at the names of those who have filled the Presidential 'chair, embracing Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Van Buren, Harrison, Buchanan and Lincoln, that the contest should now have been between Lin coln and Johnson on the one side, and M'Clel 7 hin and Pendleton on the other. CONDENSED APPLE SuTcr.,—The juice of itP ples, or sweet cider, before it has undergone anyfiermentation, may be boiled down to one; seventh of its original bulk, without losing its flavor or any good quality. It has no taste of boiled cider, but is a beautiful amber col ored jelly, pleasant to eat in its simple state, particularlY. ea a tart sauce, with poultry, game, or other meek.. It makes excellent pies and tarts, and may, in fact, he applied to all those uses to which dried apples or boiled cider are employed, and is much supe rior. Beside this, by the addition of six times its bulk of whter(the quantity originally with drawn) wemay have sweet cider again, which will undergo fermentation, as it would have. done .I.g first, but more slowly, and, like other: cider, go ti.l.r,quel all the changes, until it ultimately becomes 49. F 4 eider. AGRIMILMIIILAL STATISTICS. —From the cen sus returns for 1860, which have just bean printed, it appears that the State of Illinois produced the largest quantity of wheat and Indian corn of any State in the Union, viz: 23,837,023 bushels of wheat, and 115,174,777 busJo)e of Indian corn. I=3:=l CORNER LOUNGING.—We are pleased to learn that the police have determined to break up the crowds which every evening congregate on some of the street corners of our city. The practice has become intolerable, and should be abated. Persons doing busines in the vicinity of these assemblages, are greatly annoyed by them. Their windows are bid from view, and the entrance to their stores crowded so much as to prevent the free ingress and egress of customers. Every man who has a wife, a daughter, or sister, is interested in having these crowds broken np. Insulting remarks are frequently made within the hear ing of persons going by, and women, and chil dren cannot' pass without being offended by blasphemy end obscenity. Some of the men who are in the habit of standing on the cor ners make pretensions to respectability, and would be ashamed to be arrested for nuisance. All such are informed that if they persist in their course, they will be made examples of. Every lover of order and decency will be pleased to learn that the police are about to disperse these crowds of blackguards which nightly occupy the street corners to the annoy ance and inconvenience of business persons and pedestrians.—Lancaster Repress. We hope our Mayor will give similar in struction to his police. The corner lounging nuisance is just as bad here as it is-MLitt:mas ter, and the Mayor has it in his power to abolish the same. If the Mayoi knew how troublesome these corner loafers are he would not hesitate to abolish it at once. PROFESSOR SIBBET. —We understand that Professor Sibbet has already recoiled a large number of calls for WHair Restorative.. The Professor's method Of9feating the hair is, in our judgment, founded.upon scientific princi ples. Mr. S. has been in our State, for more than a year, during which time he has visited most of our large towns and cities, and has treat ed thousands of cases; and he claims to have been successful in every case. We see no reason why the scalp ca of be treated as successfully as any other part of the body; and it is fo,the scalp that the Professor direpts his efforts, for if the scalp can be made heality, a vigorous growth of hair must bathe result: This Ile- . storative can be obtained from no one but*. S., as his mode of practice makes it necessary. for him to see the party. He can be found for a short time at the Jones House. BUSINESS . ITEMS. Da.
