Those dealers in human flesh, the Substitute Brokers, are driving a flourishing business, and prices have advanced considerably. As soon as the present demand is supplied, substitutes will again become cheap. =ME Am HOME. —Capt. Levi Weaver, of Co. G, 55th Penn's Vols., reached home, in this city, on Wednesday, having been discharged, after faithfully serving his country three years. Capt. W. has been a noble officer, never fal tering, but always among the foremost on the battle-field. He has numerous friends here, who extend him a hearty welcome home. GONE Hmsfr. —Lieut. W. W. Gibson, re cently acting Post Provost Marshal in this city, has been "mustered out," his term of service having expired. He left yesterday afternoon, for his home in New Castle, Law rence county. Lieut. Gibson is a gentleman, in every sense of the term, and during his so journ in this city he gained hosts of friends. He filled various positions, and discharged his duty faithfully. I=l RICHARD lII.—To-night Mr. 5. B. Roberts takes a benefit at the Theatre, on which occa sion he will appear as RICHARD 111, in Shak speare's grand historical tragedy of that name. The whole Star Troupe is cast in the bill—Mr. Meeker appearing in two characters, and the other members of the company in various parts--Miss Nellie Sprague as Queen Eliza beth, and Miss Fanny Denham, as Lady Anne, etc. In order to obtain reserved seats; it is necessary to purchase tickets at Bannvart's drug store, at an early hour. DEA.TH OF A, b'ormrsa.—Mr. Louis E. To mer, a soldier belonging to the Pittsburg Rifles (Capt. Hall,) died, this morning, at the house of Mrs. Freaner, on Mulberry street.-- His disease was chronic diarrhoea. Deceased was an exemplary young man, and a brave soldier. Since June last, he was chief clerk under Capt. Hall, at Camp . ,pnrtin, during which time he won a large circle of friends in our midst. His remains left here this after noon, en route for his late home, near Pitts burg. Pittsburg papers please copy. ASSAULT UPON A SOLDIER. —This morning we saw an old soldier who had just been mus tered out of service, after serving his country faithfully during a period of three years. Both eyes wero black, and his face and nose cut and scarred. The old veteran was dis charged and paid off yesterday, and was about to leave the city on one of the night trains for the West. When at or near the dopot, he was siezed by two young men who threw him upon the railroad track and then rifled his pockets. Fortunately the ruffians did not obtain much booty for their villainous as sault, as the soldier had placed nearly all his money in the hands of a friend for safe keep ing. This outrage cost the soldier great Tit tering, and did not benefit the rowdies who injured him. It is hoped they may be brought to justice and punished for their evil doing. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE ' CIDARD AND THE Man.—Major R. I. Dodge has received the following orders: WAIL DEPARTMENT, PROVOST MARSHAL GENE RAM'S OFF/OE, WASHINGTON, D. C.; Nov. 29, 1864.—T0 Major IL I. You are instructed to see that the orders of the President are strictly conformed to. I am, Major, very respectfully, your obedi ent servant. (Signed) JAS. B. FRY, Provost Marshal General "TICE THEATRE was thronged last evening with the elite of the city to witness Miss Fanny B. Price's impersonation of the charac ter of Fanchon, in which she has achieved a wide spread reputation. Curiosity was on tip toe to see how one who had, during the past week, grasped and mastered, with such power and dazzling brilliancy, the most tu multuous passions in the higher walks of tragedy, could adapt herself to the require ments of such a character as Fanchon. The transition, however, was complete, and per fect—we found her the intellectual, pure heartetwhild like and lovely cricket. From the moment she made her entrance till the close of the performance she enchained and subdued every heart present with the bright lustre of her remarkable genius. Her beau tiful and mobile features assumed every phase of passion from cloud to sunshine, from storm to stillness. In her scene with the rabble at St. Andoche's Festival she rose to the sublime. The great charm in her acting, however, is the tender and holy simplicity with which she envelopes the character. Every man, woman and child in the city should see Miss Price as Fanchon."—Evening Journal. The citizens of Harrisburg will rejoice to learn that Mr. Rouse has effected an engage ment with Miss Price, and that she will appear at Brant's gall in a few weeks. All who wit nessed her impersonation of Fandlion, during a former engagement, can vouch for the truth of the above article from the Evening Journal. BURNED. -A. child named Tillie Gibson, ot Duncansville, Blitir county, was so badly burned on Friday last, by her clothes taking fire, that she died on Saturday morning. THE term "bushwacker," often applied to the murderous operations of the Southern guerflllas, meant originally to pull a boat along by laying hold of the bushes on the shore. A NVELsu farmer, named Evan Davis, while under the influence of liquor, lay down in an alley in JOhnstown, on Tuesday night of last week, and was so badly frozen that he died the next morning. Happy juveniles I Clump BURNED To Dzkru.--Last evening a child belonging to a family named Reese, of this city, was burned to death. It was seated at a table, and during the temporary absence of its mother, the little one upset a lamp, the contents of which took fire, and, communica ting to the child's clothing, burned it so ter ribly that when discovered one of its arms was burned to a crisp. The little 'sufferer lived but a short time after the accident oc curred. Lirraas TO PRISONERS.—Letters to prison ers in the South should not exceed two pages of letter paper. When a regiment reaches Camp Curtin, the first deficiency experienced, is a lack sof barracks accommodation. Regiments leaving the field, on their way home to be mustered out, aban don their camp equippage, cooking utensils, &c., expecting, when they reach the post where such muster out is to be made, that arrangements have been made to afford them at least ordinary quarters and facilities for cooking rations. But in all this, the return ing soldier, when he reaches Camp Curtin, is most wofully disappointed. The Commissary at that camp is prepared to issue rations in kind, but the soldier having no facilities to cook them, must eat them raw or content himself on an empty stomach. Now, we sub mit in all candor, whether this is just or hu mane. Camp urtin should be furnished with at least ordinary barracks accommoda tions, where the private soldier could' find shelter and accommodation to cook his ra tions. Officers can afford to seek a hotel, but the men, in seven cases out of ten, can not do this, and are therefore subject to great hardships and injustice. Added to this fact, returning soldiers are frequently if not gen erally mustered out of service days before they are paid off. This adds to the burdens and the injustice suffered by the heroes, be cause as soon as men are mustered out all pay and rations stop. Thereafter the men must support themselves at their own ex pense. —Our attention has been called to this state of affairs by the condition of the men belong ing to the 76th Regiment P. V., who have been, or were, lingering at this post for sev eral days, without accommodation being afforded them at Camp Curtin, mustered out of service, while, at the same time, they have not been paid of; and are thus turned penniless on the streets of Harrisburg. Many of these poor fellows 'were wandering hungry and shelterless through our streets very lately. They imagine that the State authori ties are responsible for their suffering. But such is not the fact. Gov. Curtin, on the contrary, has been persistent in his efforts to secure a change in this business, and to inau gurate a system by which the accommodation of the returning heroes, at this post, would be at once complete and just. As it is, His Excellency is powerless. Won't the War De partment, if only on the score of humanity, do something to relieve these evils? It would cost very little to treat the soldier with decent fairness, while it is only fair that he should first be paid off, and then mustered out. The loosest equity known to justice would seem to demand this for the men who peril their lives for the safety of all we hold dear as a people. BUSINESS ITEMS.
