won the admiration of the large crowd assem

Ho, FOE MIDDLETOWN' I—A special train will
leave the depot, at.six o'clock this evening, to
convey passengers to the Union Mass Meeting
at Middletown. The Invincibles and a large
crowd of our citizens will be there.
SALE OF CAPTURED STOCK.—There will be
an extensive sale of captured cattle, in this
city, on Tuesday, 15th inst. Six hundred head
will be sold. Special attention is directed to
the advertisement, in our columns.
ST. PArL's Episcopal Church, corner of
Ridge road and Reservoir. The Bev. A. J.
Barrow will deliver a discourse to-morrow
evening on "Isaiah and the Prophets." Service
to commence at half-past six o'clock.

The first afternoon and evening market held
in the new house in West Harrisburg, com
menced at three o'clock this afternoon, and
will continue until eight o'clock this evening.

MORE COPPERHEAD LIES.--The Copperheads
were busily engaged ih circulating the most
infamous lies among the farmers, at market,
this morning. They stated that Grant had
been defeated, with a loss of thirty thbusand
men, and that another draft was to take place,
etc. A cause that requires such infamous
lying to bolster it up, is unworthy the sup
port of any honest man. '
DIR. THOMAS. STEWART MILLER met with
an accident, at Gulden's Station, on the Get
tysburg Railroad, on the 4th inst., which
produced instant death. He was alighting
from a buggy, and in taking out his gun the
hammer of his gun caught and exploded the
cap, discharging the gun into his breast. He
leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.
His age was 27 years, 6 months and 16 days.
THE ATTITUDE OF THE REV. JOHN WALKER
,lACKSON.-A gentleman informed us this
morning that it is reported, and to some ex
tent believed, that in the oration delivered in
this city a few weeks Since, by the Rev. J.
Walker Jackson, he had declared that thatoord
Constitution did not ocettr in the Chicago plat. ,
form. After referring to our notes of .that
oration, and taxing our memory to its fullest
extent,, we are satisfied that Rev. J. never
made this •mistake; and if he did, it was a slip
of the tongue, in the excitement of public
.peaking, for, after having read the Chicago
platform in the bearing of the audience, such
a statement would have been a simple ab
surdity. -
Rev. Jackson's argument was this :---that
the platform, analyzed in the light of the
teachings of its authors, as' to the theory of
our government, contained no purpose to re
store the Union on the basis of the Constitution
as it is ; that the Govermitent, in its legisla
tive, executive and judicial departments, had
always taught, not only the right, but the duty
of the coercion of rebels ; that the theory of
modern Democracy being that the Federal
Government had no power of coercion, their
theory of reconstruction, if possible, implied
Union, 'with the right of secession guaranteed to
the States composing it! He did say that the
word Rebellion nowhere occurred in the plat
form—thafits words of condemnation were
for the President of the United States, and
not for. Jefferson Davis.

en. Confederacy, in a letter published sinoe
Rev. Jaokson's oration in this city, takes pre.
oisely the same view of the Chicago Platfcirm
taken by Rev. J. Vice President Stephens

Wno KILLED CAMPRELL?--The copperhead
papers have sent up a howl in regard to the
murder of James Campbell, who was killed
in Philadelphia, on Saturday night last, while
the copperhead procession was passing
throUgh the streets of that city. They alleged
that he had been killed by the "Linoolnites,"
but the verdict of the coroner's jury, rendered
after a full investigation of the case, shows
that Campbell was killed by a member of his
own party. The following is the verdict:
"That the deceased, James Campbell, came
to his death on Saturday night, the 29th of
October, 1864, in front of the Commonwealth
Buildings, from a blow received from a club,
or other heavy blunt instrument, at tike hands
of some person unknown, who came from the
Seventeenth Ward Association, parading in
the Democratic torchlight procession."
DEATHS Es CAPTAIN' FENN'S COMPANT.—We
learn that two members of Captain Penn's
company, (C,) 201st Pennsylvania Regiment,
are dead.
Private George J. Cram died, at Alexandria,
Va., on %he 22d of October, after an illness of
three weeks.
Private William A. Hippie died on the ftlith
of October, at Second Division hospital, Alex
andria, after an illness of two weeks.
The disease, in both cases, was typhoid
fever. Mr. Crum, previous to Volunteering,
resided near this city, and Mr. Hippie On
Carroll township, Perry county. Captain
Fenn writes that better soldiers never ware
the badge of the 201st Regiment.

Urn principal of the Inland Revenue De
partment of England has just examined twenty
six sample's of beer, of which twenty wow
adulterated. In fourteen of these samples; lie'
found the prohibited articles called grains
paradise—grains which, however, fit for Edeik ,
are by law unfit for beer. In one of the fou*-:
teen he found, beside the prohibited grains,*
portion of tobacco; in two others, cocculus in
dium was present in large and dangerous
quantities; two samples contained capsicum;
and two others proto-sulphate of iron.
H.F.ANY STOM—Last Friday a heavy storm
passed over Mahonoy city, Schuylkill county,
causing considerable damage. Two new

lic and the other Methodist, were blown
