VOTE OF THE SOLDIERS IN CAMP CURTIN
HOSPITAL —Yesterday a vote was taken among
the soldiers in the 'Hospital at Camp Curtin,
with the following result:
For Lincoln 59
" McClellan 4
Majority for Lincoln
The soldiers will roll up a tremendous vote
for Father Abraham, on the Bth of November.
TEE following little fable contains a great
deal of truth, and is peculiarly adapted to the
present time :
A skunk once challenged a lion to single
combat. The lion promptly declined the
honor of such a meeting. "How," said the
skunk, " are you afraid ?" " Very much so,"
quoth the lion, "for you would only gain lame
by having the honor to fight a lion, while
every one who met me for a month to come
would know that I had been in company with
a skunk."
THE GREAT LEDGER STORY.-By particular

opportunity of doing so. Mr. Rouse, Miss
Fanny Denham, Messrs. Meeker, Fisher, and
the whole company will appear. The trained
dog Pluto will be ;introduced by Mr. Rouse.
Go to Brant's Hall, and see the Bidden Rand.
GAMBLING IN HARRISBURG. —However cau
tiously and skillfully the fact is attempted to
be concealed, it is nevertheless true, that
gambling is carried on to a fearful extent in
this city, and that the professional gamblers
have been reaping some rich harvests within
the last few years. And what is most singu
lar, is the fact that the existence of these
"gambling hells" is well known to every offi
cer in the city, who is under the obligation
of an oath to assist in their suppression. In
deed, we knew of what we write, when we
assert that some of the officers of the law are
the confidential friends of the most notorious
of these gamblers, conniving at their business,
and, very possibly, sharing their profits. In
calling attention to these fasts, we do not, of
course, expect at once to abate the evil. All we
desire is to apprise the moral sense of the com
munity of the existence of this evil, and, if
possible, pave the way for the election of men
to office in our municipal government, who
will attempt the abatement of these hells.
DEDICATION OF THE HALL OE THE REM:MI
CAH INVINCIBLES.—Last evening the hall occu
pied as the Headquarters of the Republican In
vincibles, was formally dedicated and taken
possession of by the club. In the absence of
the President elect, S. S. Child acted as Pres
ident pro tem.
On motion of Harry Uhler, a committee of
three were appointed to wait on A. J. Herr,
Esq., orator of the occasion, and conduct him
to the hall.
The Committee, consisting of Harry Uhler,
J. D. Boas, and J. M. Weistling, after a short
absence, appeared with and . introduced Mr.
Herr to the club.
Mr Herr was received very cordially. lie ex
pressed a warm sympathy in the objects of, the
organization, recognizing in the efforts which it
proposed to make, a harbinger of certain and
glorious victory. The combination of forces
was necessary to success, as well in the polio
cal as in the natural world. Without union,:
organization and action, men could accom
plish but little, and hence the union and the
organization and the action which the Repnb
liean Invincibles proposed to effect, were.
those by which we could alone succeed at the
polls. Mr. Herr then went into an able dis
cussion of the issues involved in the Presi
dential election, their identity with the hope
of armed success in crushing the slave-holders'
rebellion, and their absolute necessity in pro
curing the peace; prosperity and glory of the
nation. His speech was listened to with great
attention.
J• M. Wiestling followed in a few remarks,
when the club adjourned to meet again to
night.

!SOLDIER'S FUNERAL. —The funeral of Piavate
W. H. H. Smith, of the 55th Penna. .Regi
ment, took place this afternoon. It was at
tended by a number of his old compantions
in-arms, of Capt. Waterbury's company, and
the remains were interred with military hon
ors. Peace to his ashes !
A GOOD THUG. —One of the ladies, asslisted
by others, of the Second Presbyterian con
gregation, who felt deeply interested in. the
welfare of the sick and wounded soldiers at
Camp William Penn, at Philadelphia, and
other places, held an entertainment on last
Thursday evening, in the Masonic Hall,
(Tanner's alley,) and cleared $76, to be de
voted to their benefit.
VICE-PaESIDENT Han!LUX IN TUE HAIM Or
r HoUSE or REpIIESENTATSTES.—The Super
intendent of Public Buildings, Mr. Steen, has
gone to a great deal of trouble to prepare the
hall of the House of Representatives, tor the
accommodation of the ;Union meeting to
night. He has removed the desks, gathered
an immense number of chairs and bei
and so arranged them as to be able to wecom
modate at least a thousand people. Renee,
no one desirous of hearing an eloqUent speech
this evening, should absent herself or himself
from the Capitol for fear of the lack , Df ac
commodations.
THE W.llll DEIV.OO3.I.GY Or PENNSYLVALGIA.-
To the call of the War Democracy of New
York, for a grand mass meeting in that city,
in support of the re-election of Abrahan t Lin
coln, ure appended,
.among other nar nes of
citizens of Pennsylvania approving of the
movement, those of John L. Speel and John
Till, of this city. The opposition organ in
this city has seized upon this fact and made
it the pretext for a base and cowardly .attack
on those gentlemen, attempting not only their
misrepresentation politically, but assailing
them personally in the grossest, most :malig
nant and villainous manner. So far as these
gentlemen are concerned, we have mever
known them to be other than Democr.ats.—
Mr. Speel was elected Treasurer of Dariphin
county as an independent Democratic candi
date—while he and Mr. Till have been steady
and consistent supporters of the Democratic
organization for almostthirty years. But when
treason and rebellion showed themselves in
the Democratic party, these men refused to
sanction the one or fight in the cause of the
other. This did not impair their Democracy,
but it secured for both the - angry resentment
of traitors, as was exhibited in the attack
made on them yesterday.
—We did not intend to essay a political de
fence of Mr. Till or Mr. Speel. They are both
old enough to defend themselves on that score.
What we desire to offer for thest gentlemen is
a word personally, socially, and. as well erstab
fished and long respected business citizens of
Harrisburg, in answer to the slurs of tlaose
who are scarcely known to the people of our
city, and who are comparative strangers in
our midst. John L. Speel and John Till. are
good men and true. They are honegit men .and
generous men, above the sneers of mere ad
venturers, who seek our midst to make their
salt. They have not lived and labored in this
city keeping a fair business record, and main
taining an honorable social reputation, to be
thus attacked with impunity; and we are very
much mistaken if those who thus wantonly at
tempted their detraction, will not live to regret
their impunity. Indeed, there is not
Democrat in Harrisburg who has a heart
unstained by sympathy for his country's en
emies, that was not disgusted with the attack
to which we allude. It was low, uncalled
for and cowardly, and exhibits fully the lash
with which Democrats are to be whipped into
an opposition to the Government. It the cop
perheads desire to make votes against McClel
lan, let them repeat their attacks on such
men as Messrs. Speel and Till.
aaiiit college.
Ma. Enrros:—The grand subscriptions
made here, last week, to the above College,
by gentlemen in conference from various parts
of our country, have excited the admiration of
the whole land. They should stir the blood
of the Lutheran people like the blast of a
trumpet! And not only that denomination,
but other christians and benevolent people, in
behalf of that institution. Colleges, though
almost necessarily under denominational con
trol, are so far popular and undenomina
tional as regards the great and uni
versal desideratum—education.—that they.
appeal to the community at large, and espe
cially to those who have pecuniary means, for
the completeness and prosperity of educational.
influences. There are thousands of opulent
men outside of that denomination, who, if
they will sit down and think what would be
the condition of religion, and civilization,
and education if that grand old hero of mili
tant thinking, Luther, had not "fulmined it
over" Europe, will feel that Pennsylvania
College has a claim upon their liberality. We
trust that the gentlemen who have charge,
here and elsewhere, of the subscriptions, will
give a chance to the OUTSIDERS.

Dr. RAND'S SPECIFIC is exhibited in the
form of pills, made up entirely of substances
that have a specific effect upon the generative
organs. Most persons associate the idea of
operations upon the bowels from taking any
kind of pills. The SPECIFIC of Dr. Rand is
not intended as an evacuating medicine. Its
medicinal virtues are expended entirely upon
the impaired regenerative organs. The pills
are not unpleasant to the taste, and many
persons masticate them with impunity before
swallowing them ; which plan we would al

road Company are erecting an immense Locomotive
Round House, Repair Shops for Cars and Engines, Car
Building shop, Iron and Brass Furnaces, and 1/we'll/lets
for the Superintendent and other officers. A splendid
Hotel, with which are connected arrangements for feeding
passengers on the most extensive scale, has been com
menced. All these buildings are of the most permanent
and substantial character, of brick and iron, and are in
accordance with the immense business anticipated on the
completion of this great Railroad, so long anxiously
looked for, and now an accomplished fact—the last rail
connecting the Susquehanna river with Lake Eric having
been laid on Saturday, July 2d, 1864.
A Company halt been chartered by the Legislature for
supplying the town with gas and water, and the water
weeks are nearly completed. Churches will be erected
immediately. The situation of RENOVO is entirely
healthy, and as the dimensions of the town are limited
by nature, the value of the kits must appreciate greatly
in the course of a few years. .
EMPORIUM will certainly be the most important com
mercial point between Lock Haven and , Warren, a die
lance of 158 miles. It is near the eentre of the railroad,
47 miles west of Renovo; 159-miles from Sunbury and
141) miles from Erie It is near the Junctjon of the Drift
wood
Branch of the Sinnemahonieg, with West Creek,
Portage Creek and North Creek, the Valleys of which
streams make it the most accessible point on the Phila
delphla and Erie miiroad to a very extensive district of
country. The moment the projected railroad connecting
it with the city of Rochester, N. Y., shall be completed,
few interior towns in the State wilt surpass it iu business
capabilities. An excellent graded road now connects it
with Coudersport, the seat of Justice of Potter county.
It is also connected with Smethport, the seat of Justice of
McKean county. Emporium is the County seat of Cam
eron county; it lies a handsome Court Reese, and the
Land Ce_, nee) . hen jest completed a large net commo
dious Hotel, which will immediately be opened. to the
public. The Railroad Company are about to erect a hand
some and permanent Passsenger Station at a central point
near the Hotel and Court House. - The place is healthy,
and excellent water is abundant. It is in the midst of
one of the finest White Pine regions in Pennsylvania.
As a ma e ufacturipg wive it has groat advantages; coal,
lumbar, stone, berk far tanneries are abundant, and its
railroad' communications with the great lakes and all
points of importance in the seaboard are unsurpassed.
This place was selected thirty years ago as a-point of im
portance, and a town laid out with the prophetic name of
EMPORIUM, but the difficulty of access has prevented
its development so entirely that it is mainly known for
the excellence of hunting and. trout fishing in the vicinity.
The completion of the Philadelphia and Erie railroad
must soon make it a place of great importance as a distri
buting point for goods of all kinds, and it Offers great
advantages for persops of neeentrate capital who desire
to identify themselves with the early history of a thriv
ing town.
'Lithographic Maps of Digh towns are now ready, and
Mr. GIDEON J. HALL, General Superintendent, will
