SOUTHWEST CORNER OF FRONT AND NEaRIET STREETS.—Hare you examined those auction goods at Bowman's Cheap Dry Goode Store 9 I= THE school directors of Adams county met in Convention on Monday, and increased the salary of the County Superintendent from $5OO to $BOO. Cumit.--Our farmers continue to otter cider on the streets, at the rate of six dollars per barrel. Rather steep ! Apples have been un usually abundant. =CM= Runaways.--There were two or three run offs in the city yesterday, caused by horses becoming frightened. No serious damage re sulted in either case. Fon SALE. —A numbergof farms, building lots, improved property, &c., are advertised for sale, in our columns. Capitalists t.ftVo splendid opportunities afforded for profitable investment of their surplus funds. CHANGE OF Houns. --Attention is invited to the advertisement of the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad.. A change in the time of the arrivel and departure of trains has been made, and an additional train placed on the road. Tux First Free Baptist Church is receiving a beautiful coating of mastic on the outside. When finished, this will be one of the hand somest churches in the city, alike honorable to the congregation and the cause of religion. CM= PREPARE For. WlNTE.u.—Many of our citi zens are laying in their supply of coal for winter use. This is a sensible movement, as prices may advance; besides there is always a loss sustained by those who purchase in Winter, on account of dirt, snow, 4.-c. Tax leaves are dropping from the trees around the Capitol, and the finger-marks of King Frost are visible on every hand—re minding us that the year is rapidly :drawing to a close, and admonishing us that the au tumn of life is approaching. =ZMINI DEATH OF A SOLDIER.—Joseph nger, late a soldier in the 55th Pennsylvania: regiment, died at his residence, in this city, on Monday last. His disease was consumption, which he contracted in the army, during his three years' service. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss. I== THE FIAMEISSURG INVINCMLES. —The members of this organization will meet at their head cplarters, corner of Locust and Raspberry alley (formerly the house occupied by the Mount Vernon Truck Company,) for the purpose of completing their organization and the distri bution of equipments. It is hoped that all the enrolled members will be present; and a cordial invitation is extended to all loyal young men who desire to attach themselves to the club, to come forward and enroll them selves to-night. GLORIOUS!—The telegraph brings us the news of a glorious victory won by Sheridan. The loyal people are rejoicing, but the cop perheads mourn. It is rumored that the bar bers are about to charge the latter five cents itixtra per shave, on account of the great length of their faces. Union ballots at home and Union bullets in the army are doing a great work. Despair is visible in the countenances of the "peace" men. They do not think of firing a salute "up the river" in honor of Sheri dan's victory. The smell of powder is too much for them. Three cheers for "Little _NU!" Coßpnarravo MURDERER ADNITTED TO BAli. —The Bloomfield papers inform us that David Grove, the copperhead, who murdered Easter line in Landisbnrg, Perry county, on election night, severing the jugular vein and causing death in a few minutes, was brought before ;fudge Graham, in Bloomfield, on a writ of Ili hens Corpus on Tuesday, the 18th„tand after hearing testimony was admitted to bail in the sum of $2,000. From the testimony it would appear that Grove and Easterline had sepa rated, and afterwards Grove made the murder ous assault with a knife, which caused the death of Easterline. I=l HONORABLY ACQUITTED. —A day or two ago we published an account of what was sup posed to be a fraudulent transaction, on the part of Mr. James Martin, of Spruce Hill township, Juniata county, who had been ar rested on a charge of enlisting drafted men for the United States service. We are pleased to learn that at a hearing given him, Mr. Mar tin was honorably acquitted. It appears that Mr. Martin was not aware that Thomas Young (whom he had enlisted) was a drafted man until the fact was discovered by the military authorities here. Then, in order to save Young from being treated as a deserter, Martin ten dered the $3OO necessary to pay his commuta tion, under the old law. There being no evi dence to convict him of knowingly enlisting a a single drafted man, of course Mr. M. was released. Mr. Martin is one of the most influential citizens of Sprice Hill, highly esteemed, and has done good service in filling up the quotas of the township on various occasions. FROM AN OLD FRIEND IN 1E Barran Isrzs. --We have just received the Aberdare Times, published in Wales, sent to us by our ; young friend Harry Davis, who is on .a professional tour through the British Isles, with his pano rama of the great rebellion. Judging from the account contained in this sheet, Mr. Da vis is achieving great success, and his pano rama is regarded by the Welsh critics as a splendid achievement of art. The Ti77lfS, however, charges Harry with being prejudiced in favor of the Federals. We shouldn't won der if he was. SUBSCRIBERS to the bounty fund of the Third ward, city of Harrisburg, are hereby notified that a balance of about $2,200 is yet in the hands of the Treasurer. The committees will meet at the Franklin House on Friday evening, the 21st inst., at 7.i o'clock, and particularly desire and earnestly request that all the subscribers meet with them and join in making a proper settlement and distribution of the funds on hand. W. W. JENNINGS, President Third Ward Association ELEGANT INvEsTantrrs.—We would again call the attention of our readers to the valua ble Oil Stocks advertised in another column of our paper. It is certainly one of the very best paying investments for capital that has ever been offered to the American people. Large fortunes are being realized in a short time, on very small investments. The "Burn ing Spring" and the Rathbone Petroleum Oil Companies of Pennsylvania are safe and reli able companies, and will certainly open an immense field for permanent and profitable investments. These companies are under the manage ment of influential, responsible and promi nent business men and capitalists of the city of Philadelphia, and will be conducted in such a manner as will insure large dividends to those who invest in these stooks. We would, therefore, advise our friends not to allow these stocks to be sold without examin ing into the merits of these companies, there by losing an investment that will certainly pay immense profits. Our young friend, Major J. R. Muffiy, the superintendent and agent for these companies, can be found at all times in the law office of Robert Snodgrass, Esq., and Col. F. K. Boas, on Third street, three doors above Market. I=l THIRTEENTH PENN'A CAVALRY.-111 the en gagement on the 29th ultimo, the 13th Penn'a Cavalry acted a conspicuous part. CEIZZI A FIFAAANTr RE-UNION OF OW FREENDS.— One of those pleasant re-unions for which the inner circles of the respectable colored popu lation of this State is noted, has just come to our knowledge, the incidents of which we deem sufficiently interesting to form a local paragraph. It took place at the residence of Thomas Spence, one of our most respecta ble colored citizens, on Monday, the 17th inst., when seventeen men and, women sat down to a sumptuous repast, the feast being in honor of Thomas Greenly and Mrs. Susan Spence, mother and uncle of Mr. Thomas Spence. A coincidence of the occasion was that seventeen individuals sat down to dinner on the seventeenth day of the month. We give the names as follows : Thomas Greenly, born - August 9, 1777; aged 87 years. Elizabeth Mortis, born February 2, 1780; aged 84 years. Susan Spence, born April 30, 1781; aged 83 years. Daniel Williams, born March 15, 1783; aged 81 years. Rev. William Jones, born)/ebruary 2, 1793; aged 81 years. Margaret Armstrong, born May 29, 1790; aged 74 years. Hannah Kelly, born -- -, 1790; aged 74 years. James Pople, born October 18, 1791; aged 73 years. Joseph Pople, born January 21, 1794; aged 70 years. Margaret Pople, born July 12, 1797; aged 68 years. Lucinda Brown, born January 8, 1798; aged 66 years. itebecca Goanes, born October —, 1800; aged 64 years. Mary Jones, born ---, 1802; aged 62 years. Catharine McClintock, born December 13, 1803; aged 61 years. Mary Pople, born May 5, 1807; aged 57 years. Maria Williams, born May 11, 1811; aged 53 years. Elizabeth Chandler, born August 16, 1812; aged 52 years. The combined ages of these seventeen in dividuals amount to one thousand one hundred and ninety-eight years! These venerable men and women are all communicant members of different churches, the greater portion belong ing to the M: E. church. Those of the party who were born in the last century, were too infirm to proceed to the banquet, without the aid of a carriage, which was kindly furnished by the host, Mr. Spence. Before the'gnests took their seats at the ta ble, Mr. Thomas Greenly aske&a blessing, in the German language, of God. At the close of the repast, Rev. William Jones returned thanks to God for all the good he had already showered on those present. From what we have heard of this re union of literally old friends, we doubt if ever a more pleasant affair distinguished the hos pitality of more pretentious people. All but three of those participating were , relatives of Mr. Splurge-Lend the banqnet was given by Mr., Mrs. and Miss Spence, in honor of their old friends and relatives. - A McClellan Opiutittla ai a Tory Scribbler. Ma. Enitrort.—l was filled with perfect dis gust on reading, in the Patrict and Union of this evening,, a contemptible and scurrilous article on Mr. Lincoln's private life. My knowledge of the President—and I had many and good opportunities of studying his private character—makes me believe and condemn the article as malicious as it is false. I know he is a warm-hearted, noble•souled man, gen erous to a fault, and one upon whom the call for charity. mever fell unheeded; that unosten tatiously he has distributed with a liberal hand charities, and it would be in direct an tagonism to every impulse of his nature to act as he is represented as acting. The meaner attack upon Mrs. Lincoln is so vile, that tie fellow who penned it should be ashamed to showihis face in the light of day. If our cause has to be uphold by such means, it present, itself to my mind as being very weak. Per sonal attacks all honorable men shun, and no gentleman is known to engage in them--but such an attack as the one in question should debar the writer from being treated other than as a blackguard.
