adv eAtegra,A q! A 1;1 12. B U F. Q. TUESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER B, TOWN AND COUNTRY. Meeting of Uniou Count Com mitree. 'he members of the Dauphin €ouuty Union Committee are requested to meet at the Frank lin *House, in the city of _Harrisburg, on Thursday, September 15th, at 2 o'clock, P. m. A full attendance is requested. By order of J. J. SHOEMAKER, Chairman. J. M. W/ESTLING, Secretary. Cw COZZI Local, matters are scarce. Nobody getting killed, no murders, no rights, no runaways. WORKIdEV are busily engaged in repairing the Herr House. It is to have a thorough overhauling. ===l THE late - rains have caused a rise of several feet in the river, but the water is not suffi ciently high for rafting. THE political parties are about entering upon the tall campaign. Look out for lively times from now until the first of November. POLICE affairs have been dull for some time past. Drunks and disorderlies are the prin cipal offenders brought before His Honor, the Mayor. Mae. Rusa, of Carlhde, or vicinity., had a portmonnaie, containing over thirty dollars, abstracted from her pocket, yesterday, while awaiting a train at the depot. THE farmers are now busily engaged—some plowing, some sowing grain, and others cut ting off their corn. In certain localities many have already finished sowing their fall grain. Acenmwr.-111r. H. D. Peeling, of Williams port, was knocked down by a train, and had one of his arms cut off, on Wednesday last. He was walking on the track at the time of the accident. it is thought he will recover. MOVED METE QUARTERS. —The 202 d regi ment, (Col. Albright,) which was encamped in the Fair Grounds at ehambersburg, has pulled up stakes and moved westward some four miles. it is. now in camp with the 201st keel. Awl.) SUGAR CANE.--The fanners of Franklin county are raising large quantities of cane, and say it is the most profitable production that can be cultivated.' One party realized eighty-seven gallons of syrup from cane grown upon one quarter of an acrd of wound, last season. At a time like the present, when syrups sell at forty cent% per quart, farmers should engage in the cultivation of cane, THE friends of Pennsylvania College, at Gettysburg, should not forget that a conven tion will be held in the First Lutheran Church in this city, on the 18th of October, for the purpose of adopting such mea-ures as will secure the endowment of the college, which is one of the oldest Lutheran institutions of learning in ourcountry. Rev. Dr. Hay is chair man of the, committees of arrangement for the convention. Liberal contributions have already been made. =:=l How . If any of our readers consider any of these suggestions personal, we advise them to ease their consciences at once. .Rnyonms.—We constantantly hear a vast deal said on the subject of reform—the last reformation being a recommendation to cease eating butter in order to pull down the present high price of that article. But sooner to reach such a desirable consummation, we have a much better and a more practicable suggestion to make It is as follows: Let every lady in the city of Harrisburg shorten the length of her dresses, so as not to act as a side-walk sweeper in the shape of a trail, and let every gentleman curtail his lager and tobacco account, and the price of butter will not be felt in the account current of the domestic expenses, simply be cause the expense of the luxury of trailing dresses, /lager and tobacco is a dreadful strain on the family exchequer. Try the experiment, neighbors. =I A GOOD HIT AT THE IMPUDENCE or "OUR CONGRESSIsIAN."—Our Congressman of Black Cow memory has not only taken the stump, but he is on the curb-stones of Harrisburg, laboring for his own election as well as that of M'Clellan. To show how he works, the following incident is an illustration: Meeting an intelligent young man the other day, Miller impertinently began to question him, when a rather pointed dia logue ensued. "So you intend to vote for Lincoln, do your quoth William Henry. "Certainly I do," replied the sturdy young Republican. "It is very strange to hear• a man of your intelligence make such n confession, because Lincoln is bound to be licked, as none but secessionists and abolitionists will vote for him." "Then," sarcastically retorted the Republi can, "Lincoln is bound to be unanimously elected, as there are but two classes concerned in this contest—secessionists and abolitionists —copperheads and Republicans--loyal men and traitors." Men who overheard this con versation say that Miller could not see the point—the black cow obscuring his vision. CHA3I:I3EBSBITRG. —Yesterday we we spent an hour among the ruins of this once beautiful town. The blackened walls of more than two hundred and fifty houses still stand to remind the passer-by of the infamous deeds commit ted by the rebel fiends. Here and there preparations are being made to reconstruct kitchens nd backbaildings for winter use, but the beautiful mansions which lately adorn ed the streets will not be rebuilt until the rebel hordes are whipped and peace is restor ed. The dwellings that escaped the fire are crowded, many of them containinr , two or three families, while 'he parlors have been converted into store-rooms. A• number of weather boarded shanties have been erected in the "burnt district" and business of various kinds resumed on a small scale- Many for trier residents of the place have left, to return no more. The county offices are in the upper story of an engine house. There is but one hotel of any consequence in the place, but bar rooms have been opened on the sites of most of the burnt inns. „ The citizens com plain bitterly of the high prices of produce of every description. In many instances they are higher than in this city—owing to the sup ply being somewhat limited. • A splendid oftioe has been flitted up in the lecture rooms of the Presbyterian church, by McClure & Stoner, of the Avnichn .Repositery. Hurry np your quotas. " THE CoNQUERING HERO COMES."—The " Immortal .7. N." is now sojourning at the State Capitol Hotel, in this city, and leaves for his western home in the morning, and if our citizens can resist the general prejudice that S. N. knows full well must exist against his theory of the war, and will assemble to night in front of the Court House, he will as sume all pressure on himself before he bids us adieu. IMIZEICE A Emu AFFAIR. —The members of the cop perhead convention met this morning in the Court House, and the proceedings of the same were conducted on the most boisterous principle. Ex-Governor Porter, who seemed to be the rulingipirit, offered a series of reso lutions of the most ultra copperhead and rebel order, which were adopted, notwith standing the earnest opposition of Dr. Seiler. The Ex-Governor displayed considerable ear nestness and feeling towards the "old warrior," Dr. Seiler, and the majority of the convention being on the Governor's side, he was triumphant. The convention adjourned till afternoon without nominating a ticket. TILE PEACE PaDrontsa AND FREEINTAI OP SPEECH PRACTICES Or THE COPPERHEADS. —At a copperhead meeting held in Middletown on Saturday evening last, and while Bill Miller was engaged in a fulsome laudation of lam, he was called to account by a soldier in the crowd, who denied that Nl'Clellan was the hero the speaker claimed him to be, and in sisted that he was unfit to be President. At this point, the peace Democracy rushed upon the soldier in a mass, knocked him down. trampled upon him, and after maltreating the defenceless and war-worn veteran, ejected him from the meeting. This is a specimen of the peace proclivities of the lily-livered cop perheads, and an illustration of tfie freedom of speech practices of the peace-men: , We learn that a number of she-secessionists: who infest Middletown, and who were present at the meeting, hugely applauded the brutal treatment of the soldier, and while he was being trampled upon cried out "give it; to the abolitionist—he is only one of Abe Lincoln's hirelings." At Home and Abroad. . . A babe of a week old was found, a clay or two ago, near the residence of one of the prominent citizens of Mercer. Lawrence county has filled its quota under the late call for 500.000. Good for Law rence! A. county fair will be held iu Newcastle, Pa., commencing on the 21st inst. The "Immortal S. N." says he will lecture in this city this evening. "He assumes all the pressure." This is the month for fruit, ague, fevers and rains. Look for the latter abui;tt the 20th. There is au abundant crop of apples in the Cumberland Valley. In Franklin and the upper end of Cumberland county, eider:can be purchased at $3 per barrel by consumers, but not at any price by speculators. The Presidential election takes place 'on the first day of November. A boiler in the sawmill of Cam eron & Co. ' at Williamsport, exploded, on Wednesday last, and three men were seriously injured. All the wards of Pittsburg, except o rte, are clear of the draft. The bankers and brokers of Pittsb tirg aro about organizing a Stock Board. C. GRAND, 112.1PSING AND INTEEESTLITG. —lf time, trouble, and liberal expenditures of money are conducive to the happiness - of any one, the patrons of Rouse's Theatre must be the happiest people in our city. Mr. Rouse, the gentlemanly manager, has re-eingaged Mr. Frank Drew, at great expense, and new plays, accompanied with all the grand sce nery necsssary to render them attractive, are being produced ea 2h st:;:o.essive evening. It is not asserting too much to state that the manager expends more "filthy lucre" to se cure star performers, than would pay the sal ary of any whole company that has ever at tempted to give theatrical entertainments in our city. To all who desire to see good acting by good actors, we would say, go to Brant's Hall. This evening will be per formed the celebrated drama of Rrr VAN WINKLE, or A legend of Catskill, and the great burlesque entitled MAZEPPA, or, The Wild Untamed Steed. Mr. Frank Drew, Mr. Rouse, Mr. Fisher, Miss Fanny Denham, and the whole troupe will appear im each piece. Seats can be secured at Bannvart's Drug Store at any time during the day. TEE BEDOUIN ARABS AND THE GREAT CIRCUS TROUPE.—Rivers &Derious, proprietors of the celebrated Equestrian Troupb under that title, have made arrangements by which the re cently arrived troupe of Arabian Acrobats will appear together in the same exhibition. This combination of the two greatest attractions now out in the show line, will be the grand excitement of the season. The thirteen wan dering Arabs of the Desert are in themselves a perfect exhibition, and one of the most novel and extraordinary of its kind. Their performances consist of those tremendous athletic feats which we see frequently illus trated upon the bills, but seldom, if ever, pre sented to the audience. In the case of the Arabs, however, the artist, with all his imag inative powers, has failed to do them justice. Their leapings, and vaultings, and aerial gym nastics—their prodigious muscular energy and flexibility, and their frightful pyramids of men piled six on the top of each other, are the most wonderful that can be conceived. The Circus Company of Rivers & Derious has always been composed not only of the very best artists, bat the most respectable members of the equestrian profession. But good wine needs no bush. The announce ment alone of Rivers & Derious, combined with the attractions of the Arabs, must insure them crowds wherever they ap. ear. BUSINESS ITEMS. We announced her night after night to our patrons, calculating that she would fill her engagement ; but 011 ar riving here on Saturday evening, her husband said, "at the eleventh hour," she could not play her pieces, and seemed inclbvd to make every objection to her appearance, notwith standing the fact that our stage manager had selected from her own list the pieces to open With. But from outside influence the lady has no doubt been prevailed upon to break her engager:bent with us, as two of•our com pany have had offers made to them which they can prove. `trusting that the citizens of Harrisburg will not think it is our intention to deceive, but to place before them attraction after attraction, our motto is, "Be just, and fear not." "We still live." We subscribe ourselves the public's mos obedient and humble servants. MARBLE & WELKER. The great play of CA]stir.LE will be repeated to-night, with Miss Day as " Camille." The impressions of men largely engaged in the sale of dry goods in our sea board cities, bear us out in saying that in the event of the termination of this much regretted war, that prices, instead of receding, will increase fora time, which can be accounted for from natural causes. Want of space prevents us from enu merating the direct facts upon which these im pressions are founded. Speculation in the north, we will admit, has contributed much to the present high prices Will those speoilla tors, with money in their pockets to control the market, suffer loss ? And on the other hand we say, knowingly, that many particular makes of staple goodsare out of the market entirely, and cannot be bought at any price, no matter what you may be disposed to pay for them. We adopted some months since the idea, and put it into action, of purchasing all goods front those who had got tired or fright ened at future destruction, that in their minds must overtake those who continue in business. through this means we now have on hand some thirty thousand dollars in amount of dry goods, which we are selling lower by ten to afteen per centum than they can be pur chased at wholesale in New York or Philadel phia, for the purpose of giving us a ohanoe to confirm what we have said: Please call at the cheap dry goods store of Ct L. I, Vavairant.larfsme, of Brandywine, Del., formerly of Old Chester, Del., do certify that, tor one year and a halt i suffered every thing but death from that awful disease called Dyspepsia. 31Iy whole system was prostrated with weakness and nervous debility; I could not digest my food; if I ate even a cracker or the smallest amount of food, it would return just as I swallowed it; I became so costive in my bowels that I -would not have a passage in less than from four and often eight days; un der this immense suffering, my mind seemed entirely to give way. I had a dreadful horror and evil torebodings. I thought everybody hated me, and I hated everybody; I could not bear my husband nor my own children, every thing appeared to be horror-stricken to me; I had no ambition to do anything; I lost all my love of family and home; I would ramble and wander from place to place, but could not bo contented; I felt that I was doomed to hell, and that there was no heaven for ins. and was often tempted to commit suicide. so near was my whole nervous system de stroyea, and also my mind from that awful complaint, Dyspepsia, that ray friends thought best to have ma placed in Dr. Rirkbride's hospital, West Philadelphia; I remained there nine weeks, and thought I was a little better, but in a few days my dreadful com plaint was raging as bad as ever. Hearing of the wonderful cures performed by Dr. Wis hart's Great American Dyspepsia Pills sand his treatment for Dyspepsia, my husband called on Dr. Wishart and stated: my case to him. He said he had no doubt he could cure me. So in three days after I called and placed myself under the Doctor's treatment, and in two weeks I began to digest my food, and felt that my disease was fast giving way, and I continued to recover for about three month:;, and at the present time I enjoy perfect health of body and mind, and I most sincerely return my thanks to a merciful God and Dr. Wis hart, and to his great American Dyspepsia Pills and Pine Tree Tar Cordial that saved me from an Insane Asylum and premature grave. All persons suffering with Dyspepsia are at liberty to call on me or write, as I am willing; to do all the good I eau for suffering hu manity.
