Dysart has resigned the office of Ticket and Freight Agent of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Altoona, and John Shoemaker has been ap pointed to fill the vacancy. VERY tiny hats, with a large boquet of nearly every flower that blooms (all natural) and about two pounds of additional hair, (all artificial,) is the "morning promenade fash ion" in head dresses in Paris. THE York True Democrat understands that quite a number of recruits for the one year's service, who previous to the late election had intended to credit themselves to the town ships in which they reside, now positively re fuse to do so because those townships, by a majority, declared that the soldier had no right to vote. A Naw style of veil is coming into favor with young ladies. It is made in the fashion able black and white figured lace, with a fine elastic run through the upper part, which fits to the edge of the bonnet. A. second elastic runs through the lower part of the veil,a short' distance from the bottom, which fastens it un der the chin, giving the effect of a street mask, transparent, but very coquettish. ME= FATAL Accrortrr.—William Ullery, brake man on the emigrant train on the Pennsyl vania Railroad, was instantly killed on Satur day morning last. It appears that he was standing on top of the cars as the train ap proached Petersburg, and not observing the bridge which crosses the track at that point, his head was struck by the timbers with such force as to cause his almost instant death. I=l ALMOST A Bar.--'l'll bet a hundred dollars with any man that the nominee of the Chicago Convention will be elected," said a man in our streets the other day whose nose indicated most indubitably the presence of copper. "There are ten ten dollar greenbacks," said an earnest looking man, stepping forward. "Please to cover them." "I—ah! want to lose my vote," said kopurhead as he slunk away. OArruann limants.—The Hagerstown Torch of Wednesday says: On Saturday evening last, a squad of sixty-two rebels, with twenty-four wagons, which were captured by General Merin in a battle which took place near Bun ker Hill on Friday last, were brought into this place by a guard of Union soldiers. The prisoners were quartered in the market house durirrg the night, and were sent to Elmira, New York, by a special train of cars, on Sun day. 11:=1 NEW COITNTEIII,EITS greenback coun terfeits have made their appearance in Phil adelphia. A RABID DIBLOYLLIST.—ArrivaI of Prisoners. —The Chambersburg Repository of Wednes day says : A man named Eli Smith, from Taneytown, Md., was arrested in this place week before last. Smith on coming to town and reviewing the destruction around him, remarked, in the presence of some of our cit izens, that it was a great pity the rebels did not burn the entire place. He also acknowl edged that he was a rebel. He was taken before Provost Marshal M'Gowan, and suffi cient testimony being adduced he was - sent to jail, and afterwerds to Fort Mifflin. On Sunday last an extra train from Hagers town arrived in this place with 56 Rebel prisoners captured by Gen. Averill's command in the Shenandoah Valley. The prisoners were in charge of guards under the command of Lieut. W. W. Blaokmere. Of the number 51 were sent to Fort Delaware for exchange, and five to Fort Mifflin to take thioath of alle giance. A Bow) BURGLABL—On Saturday night, the cellar of Mr. Cottrell, on the corner of Dew berry alley and Third street, was entered and robbed a of large amount of butter, bread, &c., the usual stock of an ample larder. The bur glar must have been exceedingly stealthy in his operations, as the family occupied a por tion of the house where almost any noise could be heard. This is beginning early in the season to steal for the sake of eating, and it would be well for the police to be on the alert for this evidently newly organized band of burglars. 1=321: THE COPS IN COUNCIL A.T MIDDLETOWN. —The long expected torch-light procession and rati fication meeting, announced some time since to be held in the borough. of Middletown, came off on Saturday evening last. After a good deal of trouble some seventy-five to one hundred of the faithful were drummed in procession, and paraded the streets behind a few transparencies. The party halted.in the square, where they were addressed by our distinguished Congressman in his usual elo quent style. We understand that he told them that notwithstanding a large portion of the party did not like the Chicago platform, that they should not care a d---n for it, but vote for the man. The most remarkable thing, however, was the absence of the "black cow." r OPEUATIONS 01' TIM U. S. Ofboth gold and silver, $406,893 15. The gold coinage, confined almost entirely to double eagles, was $586,251 88, and the silver coinage, mostly half-dollars, dimes and half-dimes, was $20,253 80. There were coined during the month four millions and forty thousand cent pieces, and three millions one hundred and thirty thousand Iwo eent pieces, together of the value of $103,000. This im mense coinage Of cents has been going' on monthly at about the rate of the last month for more than two years, and yet they are so scarce in circulation as to render the change for a five cent note a great difficulty. I=l RAILROAD Accipmcr—Three Men Killed. —A frightful accident occurred on Friday evening near Latrobe, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, caused by the explosion of a locomotive at tached to the cattle train. The locomotive (No. 237) was blown to pieces, and the tender and six cars were destroyed. The engineer, Charles Garrigan, was instantly killed, and his body found about fifty yards from the track. Hs was mangled in a shocking man ner. He resided in Pittsburg, and leaves a family. William Walter, the conductor, is missing, and it is supposed his body was blown to pieces. He also resided in Pittsburg, and leaves a family. R. Jones, the fireman, must have been instantly killed. His remains were found about one hundred feet from the wreck of the engine, with his intestines, &c., strewn upon the earth. HORRIBLE 3111:11211Ea IN BRISTOL, BUCKS COUR TY. —On Friday afternoon one of the most horrible murders ever heard of was commit ted by a youth in Bristol, Bucks county. It appears that a boy named Charles Johnson, aged about eleven years, living in the above place, enticed a lad about seven years, named Joseph Fisher, into the garret of the house occupied by the former, and there deliberate ly shot him. After committing the horrible crime, the youthful offender dragged his vic tim down stairs and into the alley. Here he placed a heap of shavings, and in order to hide the deed he laid the body upon the shav ings and then set fire 'to them. The smoke arising from the shavings caused the citizens to inquire into the matter, when, to their as tonishment, they discovered_ the body of the lad; partly consumed. The Youthful murderer was - taken into custody, when he confessed his guilt, but gave no reason for his atrooious conduct. The murder caused no little excite ment in Bristol, and the conduct of the lad was the general theme of conversation. Notwithstanding the opposition, they have a very fine company, one of the finest in fact, in our city, or that has ever appeared here. The audiences have been very select; some of the first people in our city have attended this beautiful dramatic resort. We hope the man agers will be supported by the public, for they truly deserve it by their untiring efforts to please; and the stage department we must not pass by, being in the hands of that supe rior comedian and gentleman, Harry Gilbert: and Mr. Marble, whose task is so arduous, he has filled in a superb manner, both as a man ager and an actor. The part of Count Priuli in Retribution, was rendered in a manner which stamps him as an artist of rare merit; his gentlemanly deportment, both on and off the stage, has won for him many friends and a lasting esteem. Mr. W. H. Ferris is a very' fine actor, he being natural, easy and grace ful. Mrs. M. Day does very well. Miss Ef fie Warren is as fine a soubrette as we would wish to see; pretty, fascinating and sings well. Mrs. W. L. Ayling is as good an actress as ever appeared in our city, being always per fect, an artist of the first magnitude. The ever charming and beautiful Miss Minnie Lehman must not be forgotten; as an actress words would be useless to speak of her fine artistic acting; as a lady she is indeed one worthy of every one's esteem. This evening, the charming, beautiful and versatile actress, Miss BELLA GOLDEN, will ap pear in her great impersonation of CAmmrs, in th play of Camille, or, The Pate of a Coquette; in which oharacter she stands without a rival. The press of our metropolitan cities speak of her as a second Rachel. Miss Golden has been engaged for a limited number of nights only, and will appear durmg the week in some of her favorite pieces, songs and dances. We would advise all those who wish to see a good, creditable company, and a first class company, to call at the New National, where seats can be secured from 10 till 12 A. Sr. and 2 till 4 r. xi., without extra charge. Don't forgot to go and see the only legitimate star actress now traveling in the United States, who will ap pear at the New National this evening. Re me,mber New National Theatre, corner of North Second and South streets, the pretti est and neatest theatre and best company in the city. Go early and secure good seats. "Go one, go all, and give them a call At the Queen of Theatres—he National." * BUSINESS ITEMS. Card to the Public. Parrived here on last Saturday evening, pur suant to agreement, to fill an engagement with the managers of the New National Theatre, but to my disappointment I find the manage ment deficient in company, scenery and ap pointments, and not able to produce my pieces in a legitimate and satisfactory manner. Consequently I have declined the honor of appearing at the New National Theatre. Respectfully the public's obedient servant, BELLA GOLDEN. AN ADJOURNED MEETING of the Paxton Fire Company will be held at their room this (Mon day) evening, September 12th, at 7i- o'clock. Punctual, attendance of every member is de sired. THE TERMINATION OF THE WAR AND THE PRO BABLE EFFECT UPON THE PRICE OF DRY GOODS. The impressions of men largely engaged in the sale of dry goods hr our sea hoard cities, bear us out in saying that in the event of the termination of this much regretted war, that prices, instead of receding, will increase for a time, which can be accoturted for from natural causes. Want of space prevents us from enu merating the direct facts upon which these im pressions are founded. Speculation in the north, we will admit, has contributed much CO -the present high prices Will these specula tors, with money in their pockets to control the market, suffer loss ? And on the other hand we say, knowingly, that many particular makes of staple goods are out of the market entirely, and cannot bo bought at any price, no matter what you may be disposed to pay for them. We adopted some months since the idea, and put it into action, of purchasing all goods from those who had got tired or fright ened at future destruction, that in their minds must overtake those who continue in business. 'llirough this means we now have on hand some thirty thousand dollars in amount of dry goods, which we are selling lower by ten to fifteen per centum than they can be pur chased at wholesale in New York or Philadel phia, for the purpose.of giving us a chance to confirm what we have said. Please call at the cheap dry goods store of C. L. Bowman, No. 1, corner of Front and Marks:o streets, Harris burg, Pa. SELLING off the entire stock of dry goods at Brownold's cheap corner, Second and Market, opposite Jones House. seplo.lw Third Ward. A meeting of the Recruiting Committee of the Third ward will be held at the office of the chairman on Monday evening, September 12th, at 7 o'clock, to make final settlement of the business entrusted them. The collect ing committees are requested to make their final reports and hand over their subscription books at or before that time. Citizens who have not yet paid their subscriptions are no tified to pay the amount due from them with out further delay. J. M. WIESTLLNG, Chairman of Recruiting Committee.
