AFTERNOON SESSION.
TUESDAY, Ang. 23, 1864.
The Senate met at 3 o'clock.
Senate bill No. 804, an act to incorporate
the United States mining company, was on
motion of Mr. CONNELL, reconsidered,
amended and passed finally.
The bill making appropriations for the ex
penses of the extra session was taken up.
[Among the appropriations is one for renew',
ing the wooden pavement in the -capital
grounds.]
While the appropriation bill was pending,
the Senate being waited upon by a committeb
of the , Horise of Representatives, with an in
vitation to that effect, proceeded to the cham
ber of the House of Representatives and was
present during the counting of the votes on
the amedment to the Constitution.
After some time the Senate re-assembled,
and proceeded with the consideration of the
appropriation bill, which passed finally.
Adjourned till 8 P. M.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE
AFTERNOON SESSION.
TUESDAY, August 23, 1864.
Mr. COLEMAN offered a resolution, which
was adopted, restricting speeches hereafter to
five minutes.
Mr. WIMLEY offered a resolution, which
was adopted, relative to the binding of the
transactions of the State Agricultural Society.
Senate resolution relative to the Fifty-fifth
regiment of Pennaylvania - volunteers was
concurred in.
Mr. SEARIGHT offered a joint resolution,
which was adopted. relative to the Eighty
fifth regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers,
requesting the Governor to use his influence
to have them discharged at the expiration of
their term of enlistment:
At four o'clock the members of the Senate
were introduced, and the two Houses in joiat
convention proceeded to count the votes on
the constitutional amendments. The returns
were read and summed up, with the result
already published.

The Senate having re'ired, the, House, on
motion of Mr. BIGHAM, took up Senate bill
to regulate electiens.by the gtoldiersin actual
service. While the bill was under consided
tion the - House adjourned.

Generals Lee and Heath Killed
A special Washington despatch to the Cm
mercia/, says. that General Warren's corps
achieved a grand success on Sunday. The
rebels attacked under orders from Lee, that
we must be driven: from the Weldon railroad
at whatever sacrifice. The rebels were al
lowed to pass through a gap left in our lines
and suffered. severely while their purpose was
entirely defeated.
General A. P. Hill is reported mortally
wounded, and Generals Heath and Lee, son
of R. E. Lee, are said to have been killed.
The Colonel of the 16th Mississippi is a pris

Return of General Kilpatrick.
Authentic information received here shows
that Gen. Kilpatrick has returned from his
raid on the line of the Macon rail oad, with
out any serious loss, but he ha • had a fatigued
and hard time.: He. brought in one piece of
artillery and 70 prisoners. He effectually de
stroyed the road for :2 miles and injured the
track for ten miles in various places. The
official news from Atlanta is hopeful

city yesterday, and are- reported to have
driven off 400 head of cattle and mules. .They
are said to b 9 in considerable force near Elk
Horn. Business in town is entirely suspended,
andthe citizens are arming and forming com
panies for defense, and to go to the assist
ance of the settlers at Elk Horn.

The County : Volunteer Committee have re
ported to Governor Seymour and Major
Townsend, the Commissioner appointed, by
the Secretary of War, names of over X 26,000
naval recruits, obtained since the commence
ment of the War, which the Commission will
endeavor to have credited to New York. If
successful the city will be saved from . the
draft.

The Raleigh (N. C.) Confederate says that
Gen. S. D. Lee recently arrived at Atlanta,
from the Mississippi, with a large number of
reinforcementi, and participated in the late
battle.
Intelligence has been received here Mew
bern, ) stating that, since the sailing : of the
rebel pirate Tallahassee from Wilmington,
seven more steamers of like character had
arrived there, and are now receiving their
armaments with the view of running the block
ade to war on our commerce.
The North Carolina Times speaking of the
recent election, says the Holden men have a
majority in the Legislature.
Mr. Myers; of North Carolina, desired peace
notwithstanding the fact that rebel bayonets
were used to overawe the conservatiVe Tarty
who supported HOlden. In the extreme west
ern counties, we learn 'that Holden: obtains
some very heavy majorities, but these votes
are to be thrown out, on the ground that they
are not considered loyal to the Confederate
Government. At Kinston several men were
imprisoned for voting for Holden.

The Nashville Times publishes a r port that
Wheeler's forces bad crossed the river above
Chattanooga. The rumor. that he had gone
to East Tennessee is discredited. •
It is reported that a train from Knoxville to
Chattanooga was captured near Cleveland,
and an empty train from Chattanooga . to At
lanta, on Thursday.

The Knoxville fortifications can resist ef•
fectually five times Wheeler's force.
General Steadman's wound was slight,•be
ing only a slight scrateh under the eye. Ho
drove the rebels five miles, and returned to
Chattanooga. A discredited report - prevailed
that the rebel Buckner had been killed in a
recent engagement.
