desert. An act of this description has just
come to our knowledge, and we give it !ib

dance. - Mr. David M'Cormick, one of out'
most'extensive and enterprising coal &perto:-
tors, 'desiring to show his regard for the clerk
in his employ, and to encourage to continued
faithfulness, this morning presented him with
the papers of a substitute for three years' sea
vice, for which he had paid a. fraction. less
than one thousand dollars. Mr. M'Cormick
was fully aware of the inability of his clerk to
stand a draft, and therefore this liberality re

ADJUTANT WITMAN, whose death was noticed
in a recent issue, has left a record which mer
its more than a passing notice. Serving . is
the ranks of the Lochiel Greys, he answered
the, first call of the President, and from the
first of the strife until discharged by death
his name has been upon the roll of the Army
of the Republic.
Upoh the mustering out of the three
Merit Men he joined the 40th regijinent as a
priWtl and obtained soon after thlit'p!:/sytion'
of Sergeant Major. In this capacity, miditir
CoL Knipe, he took part with the regiment 4
the engagements at y.f ddletown and Win
chester, in the Shenandoah Vitlley--May, the
24th and 25th, 1862. Under Gen. Bankethe
regiment partictipated . ,iii,•the,geyere engage
ment of Cedar Mountain, August 9th, 1862,
in which they lost heavily in prisoners,
among whom *as Sergeant Witmetn. After
a confinement of three months, during which
the battle of Antietam- was fought; Sergeant
Witman was promoted to the post of, Adjtr-,
taut. On the lst and 2d of May he was found' ,
with the 46th upon the field of Chancellors
vide; where he was agaideapb#o.44.,',,taken
to Riohmond, but released in time to take
part in the great battle of Gettysburg. Sep

Potomac, he was transferred to the West,

SUBSTITUTE BROKERS are required by the
revenue law to take out a license, but scores
of them-have not done so. These nun are
making immense profits, and they should at
once / secure their, license or be dealt with as
thelaw requires. We observe that in many
places the authorities are moving in the mat
ter, and brokers cannot put in their "sub".

the tastes of the public are not unappreciated.
A select audience of our most estimable citi
zens was present last evening to ivitnessthe
great thrilling drama of FANCEION, Tiaz,thucirsr,
which was presented in all its magnificence,
with the.tinevicenery andproperties necessary
to render it one of .the,most imposing plays
ever put upon the stage. The whole star
company was cast-in the piece, and each one
appeared in a character to which he or she
was peculiarly adapted. The great character
of Fanchon was sustained by the charming
tragedienne, -Miss' Fanny Frit*, who is with
out a rival in the part. Mrs. Rainford, and
Misses ! Sprague, Milton, Winans and Rainford
appeared to great advantage. Messrs. Rouse,
Fisher, Meeker, McAuley; and the other
Members of the company were' loudly ap
plauded. In a word, Partchgn is-the most in
teresting and attractive play over presented
for the patronage of our people.
To-night, (the last of 'the iSresent engage
tient of Miss Prieeythe same grand, thrilling
drama will be repeated for the last time.. We
