Vali TO CHAMBERSBURG. —Both Houses have agreed to pay a visit to Chambersburg, and will leave for that place to-morrow morn ing at eight o'clock. ROT WEATHER. —The present " spell of weather" is the hottest that has been ex perienced here for several years. With the therniometcr at 100 degrees in the shade, u people are sweltering, and wishing for the speedy advent of autumn. NOTICO TO lIEN BELONGING CAPT SAN NO'S CAVALRY COMPANY. —The Provost Mar shal has received notice to arrest all men be longing to Captain Sanno's company, as deserters, who do not report at Captain J. M. Opdyeke's office within twenty-fonr hours, THE Philadelphia Ledger of yesterday says that the Mayor is absent, and has not signed the bill to pay four hundred dollars for one year's service, and that "the matter must re main uncertain." The •'big bounty" may yet fizzle out in Philadelphia. I=l H. Romsox, of Company 13, 9th Pennsyl vania Cavalry, was, on Friday last, found dead in the middle of Salt River Road, seven miles from Louisville, Ky. The body was divested of clothing, and bore marks of violence. There is no doubt but that he was foully roar. dered. I=ll A ieAN named Keyser, a shoemaker, who re sided near Rider's switch, on the Northern Central railroad, was killed, a day or two ago, by a passenger train. Keyser NVIIS standing on the track, and persisted in remaining there on, until the cow-catcher in front of the loco motive caught and threw him several feet in the aii,"with the above stated result. 1=1:21 A LETTER from the 46th Pennsylvania regi naent informs us that the losses in its ranks have been very severe. On the 28th of April the regiment numbered eleven hundred men —now it can muster but three hundred. It -has participated in all of Sherman's battles since the above date, and has reflected great honor upon the old Keystone State. I=l Tux people of Reading have made applica tion to the State authorities, for one thousand stand of arms for the use of the citizens. The idea, it seems, is to raise a regiment for home defence, which would also be useful in case the rebels should threaten Harrisburg, Co lumbia, York or Lancaster, as it would take but a few hours to transport a regiment to either of those points. °annumEs.—We publish, to-day, three or dinances passcd by the city council, and ap proved by the Mayor. One of them provides for the payment of night policemen on duty in June and July ; another authorizes the money borrowed for the erection of a truck house for the Mount Vernon Hook and Ladder Compa- ny, to be used for the payment of the debt on the Good Will Engine, which was assumed by council ; the third ordinance imposes a fine for blowing off steam from the cylinders of locomotive engines in certain parts of the city. Otn Crry is infested with recruiting agents from other counties, who are endeavoring to entice our citizens to enlist, to the credit of the counties to which the respective agents belong. We would caution our people against being led away by any of those strangers, even if they oar higher bounties than are paid here. All who enlist to the credit of any place in Dauphin county will have their fami lies provided for to a considerable extent, by the relief paid by our commissioners. This item alone will more than equal the extra bounties offered by any other counties or cities. Yesterday the agent of a certain county en tered one of our business establishments, and endeavored to obtain recruits. Being some what of a "gassy" nature, he was subjected to a sprinkling from those at Itand, an 4 had to leave instantir. Served him right. Lonarro SPRINGS.—This delightful resort, located on the Allegheny mountain, in Cam bria county, one mile from the village of Lo retto, and four miles from CressOn station on the Pennsylvania railroad, is open for the re ception of visitors. As a resort. front_, the summer's heat, Loretto Springs are s not stir ;passed. Every convenience necessary to the comfort of visitors, has been provided. The table and bar are provided with the 'best in the market. The bath houses are in fine con dition. The water of the springs possess rare medicinal qualities, and contain'in large pro portions valuable mineral prciperties. A splendid band of music is in attendance. There is a daily mail to and from Loretto. Half-price tickets are issued by the Pennsyl vania railroad company to Crosson, at which place coaches are always in readiness to con vey passengers to the Springs. Full particu lars can be obtained by addressing F. A. Gib , bons, proprietor, Loretto P. 0-, Cambria oblintY, Pa. Ttlialfwere 'l . !mismrtil cases before the Mayor since yesterday morning. Four drunken sol diers were handed over to the military author ities.. Susan Demas, a colored woman, found on the streets at a very late hour, went up for 30 days. Julia B. Taylor, colored vagrant, was sent up for 10 days. Ssnrous CRAWL—A colored men, named James Brown, was arrested yesterday by offi cer Campbell, on a charge of "assault and attempt to ravish"—his intended victim being a respectable white girl of but fourteen years of age. Brewn was committed to prison for trial at court, in default of $l,OOO bail. There seems to be sufficient evidence to prove him guilty, and if convicted he should receive the extreme punishment allowed by law. The outrage is too horrible to contemplate, and unless such evil characters are properly dis posed of, our wives, daughters, sisters and mothers are not safe even in the vicinity of their own homes: CONKESPONDENTA AND TEEM LABOB.—Every raid brings an avalanche of this busy, indus trious corps. The appearance of any one of them upon our streets is a sure indication that there is something in the wind. Those in power, and who are supposed to have supe rior information in regard to the movements of the enemy, are generally far behind the specials in their facts. We have been amused, time and time again, in listening bo them re count their amusing incidents, and in witness ing the rapidity with which they grasp and interpret a point. Some military minds are so obtuse that they do not realise the fast of the foe's intention in his feints and flank movements. Not so the live special; he has it all down to dots, when he intends or will make his new base, and in nine cases tad of ten their conjectures prove cor rect. These men are never idle.' While others are wasting hours in slothful repose, they make night serve a purpose, and in crowded railway cars, they will accomplish distance, take their rest and return to the point from which they started without being missed. The topography of the country they have at their finger ends, and but a few days ago, we saw two of them lying on their face, full length of the typeet, tracking the enemy upon one of Barns' new maps, which they de clare to be excellent. What wo ile? our read ers think of traveling to Philadelphia and back in a day, and make an extra trip to Lan caster and return, and do this three days in succession? Yet this was done by one whom we know, and nothing was thought of it. The reply to an interrogatory about its being severe work, was, "Oh ! that's nothing ; my paper Sado the hit." We wish this spirit could be engendered in WNW tof our military rulers. Like birds in autumn, the specials have flown back to Washington and the Po tomac. They put in practice daily the zeal we have here faintly describeft. _._ A VEJIDANT VICTIM-- -Who Philadelphia Press gives the following statement of how a countryman was "taken in" in that city, the (Alter day: A tall countryuan from the romantic region of West Chester, Pennsylvania, called at the Central Station yesterday and related how he was duped out of $2O. He had arrived in town on the previous night, and while walk ing around yesterday morning "seeing sights"' he was accosted by a courteous young man, who offered to walk around with him for a short "spell." He entered into conversation with the representative of unsophisticated rural felicity; was decidedly courteous and un remitting in his attention. The neighbor hood of Third and Chestnut street was reached and just at this moment a man came from a store near by and asked the man who was ac companying the countryman if he could let him have the amount of the bill of $2O, as he had promised. "Upon my word," replied the individual thus accosted, " I had forgotten all about it." The conversation was a; conducted that the countryman offered twenty dollars to his "friend" to relieve him from the temporary embarrassment. This oiler was accepted, the money paid over, and the countryman and his cicerone passed on. The front of the Girard Bank was looked at; the towering pro portions of Dr. Jayne's building were ad mired; the handsome prbportion.s of the Mer chants' Exchange came in for a share of ob servation; and presently Harmony court be came an object of attraction, and the two passed through that narrow thoroughfare, but how they berme separated is a. mystery that the countryman could not solve. He was po litely requested to wait a few momenta at a corner. He waited for an hour; his dinner hour had passed, and being a stranger got be wildered, and could not tall exactly where he was. The detective to whom he related his misfortune sympathized with him, but could not adopt any means to restore the lost twen ty dollars. The representative from the country will, from sad experience, become a wiser man. =2:= GREAT DISTRESS IN CHAMBERSIIIIRG.—The following is an extract from a letter from one of our prominent citizens from a resident of Chambersburg. The establishmenkalluded to is the German Reformed Book and Newspaper Concern : Our town is entirely ruined. It cannot be exaggerated. Language cannot describe the destruction. It must be seen to be realized. I saved my house and effects by much exertion. Four-fifths of the town is destroyed. It was the most barbarous and cruel act ever record ed. I could tell you of acts that came under my own observation that would be a disgrace to the most barbarous people • on the face of the earth. Our establishment is entirely de stroyed, nothing being saved. Our loss is $40,000 at a low estimate. We had put in within the last month $3,500 of machinery. I do not think it will be rebuilt—the loss is too great. I am at a loss what to do. Three fourths of our people are turned out of ddbrs with nothing. but what they have on their backs. I have a family in every iri my house. Much distress must but thanks to the surrounding country, our present wants are being supplied. We must receive heavy aid from abroad for some time to come, other wise we must suffer much. Our town will never be rebuilt unless aided from abroad. If yon want to see a desolated place come' up.
