Beek, Pastor of the Baptist Church, Pemberton, N. J., formerly of the North Baptist Ohara, Philadelphia. * * * ******* I have known Roofiand's German Bitters ; favorably for a number of years. I have used them in my own family] and have been so pleased with their effects that I was in duced to recommend them to many other; and know that they have operated in a strikingly beneficial manner. . I tate. great pleasure in thus publicly proclaiming- this fact, and calling the attention of those inflicted with the diseases for which they are recommended to s these Bit ten; knowing from experience that my recommendation willbe sustained. 1 do this more cheerfully as Roof. land's Bitters is Intended to benefit the afflicted, and is "not ■ rum drink n Yours truly. From Roy. J. Newton Brown, D. D. Editor or the En cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge and Christian Chroni cle,Fhllattelphia. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Mehicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects, I yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the bonetite he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit or others. I do this the more readily In regard to Roofland's Ger man Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city because I was prejudiced against them for many years, under the Impression that they wore chiefly an alcoholic mixture. I inn indebted to my friend, Robert .Shoema ker, Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper ustay . and for encouragement to try them when suffering from great and long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters at the beginning of the pine& year, was followed by evident relief and restora tion to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not for six months before, and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for di• rooting me to the use of them. . J. NEWTON BROWN, Philads. From Rev. Warren Randolph, Pastor or Baptist Church, Germantown, Penn. Dr. G. M. Jackson:—Dear Sir:—Personal experience enables me to say that I regard the German Bitters, pre pared by you, as a most excellent medicine. In oases of severe cold and general debility I have been greatly bane tilted by the use of the Bitters. and doubt not they .will produce similar effects on others. Yount truly WARREN RANDOLPH, Germantown, Pa. From Rev. J. IL Turner, Pastor of Redding M. Church, Philadelphia. Dr. O. IL Jackson:—Dear Sir:—Having used your Ger man Bitten in my amity frequently I. am prepared to sty that It has been of great service. I believe that in moat eases of general debility of the system it is the safest and most valuable remedy of which I have any knowledge. , Yours, respectfully . J. R. TURNER, No. 726 N. To the Editors of Me Telegraph:—Yon have been sadly misinformed as to the facts relative to Gen. Couch's efforts to protect Chamburs burg, and also as to the feeling•in'this place. I doubt not•that many, who left in good time, complained that Gen. Couch and the citizens did not defend Cliainbersbing against 3,000 rebels; but those who stood by Gen. Couch, ready tb join in the defence if prmtleable, as did the writer hereof, do not and will not cen mire Gen. Couch. There were not, at the time the rebels, ad vanced upon Chambersburg, one himdred troops all told, within reach of this plade, subject to the order of - Gen. Couch. Several hundred of Gen. Averilis command, were about the town during Thursday evening, but they were guards detailed by Gen. Aver ill for his trains, and such considered, and they were ordered towards Shippensburg at one o'clock, A. 3.1., on Friday morning. They could not be detached from the trains, and the moving of the trains was a tie necessity. When they left; there were forty men remaining for Gen. Couch to defend the town" with against the combined com mands of the rebel Generals McCatusland and Bradly Johnston ; and these men were all detached on picket and scouting duty. The citizens who " were aril:ions to defend the town ; as you state, certainly forgot to men tion that fact until they got to - Harrisburg. Had Gen. Couch felt able to re-ist, a number of citizens would doubtless have aided him ; but he well knew that he could not resist an augmented force of 3,000 veteran rebels. The troops engaged under. the late call for 10.0 day men, were ordered to Washing ton as fast as engaged, and even his Pro vost Guard Regiment, engaged for thity in his Department, was also ordered A 9 Gen. Grant; and he had not a regiment of troops at any point in the State. I mean to express no opinion as to the propriety of mov ing all the troops to Washington when the State was threatened, but mention the fact as a matter of justice to an .. .earnest faithful and competent officer, who IS now fiercely censured for not performing impOssibilities. Gen. Averill possibly might have saved Chambersburg, and I know that Gem Conch exhausted himself to get Averill to fall back from Greencastle to this point. Ido not say that Gen. Averill is to blame, for he was un der orders from Gen. Hunter; and not subject to Gen. Couch. He had a large force of the enemy in his front, and until it is clearly proven to the contrary, I must believe that he did his whole duty. Gen. Conch had not ''Shipped all his pri vate effects from town on Monday," as you state. He had moved nothing, and left his private effects here to share the fate of the town. He remained at his post until his only squad of troops were driven into the town, and then Maj. Maneeley of his staff, took one piece of artillery to the hill west of Chem bersburg, hoping to delay the enemy in the darkness until the railroad trains and stores could all be got away. When Gen. Couch left there two rebel bat teries planted commanding the town—one on the Fair Ground Hillark&unother west of that, and a rebel force of certainly not less than 2,soo—reported since by Averill at 3,000 was around us. They did not all enter; but while McCausland sacked and burned the town, the remainder of the' command. Were near, in support of the batteries which were in position to protect the Sepoys who were rioting in the doomed village. I am not one of the lightest sufferers by the rebel possession of the town, and had General Couch failed to do his . duty, I cer tainly could have no, motive for defending him ; but having devoted my whole time and full efforts for several days to aid in protect ing the town, I fell it to be due to" General Couch to say that he left no' efforts or means within his power untried to save us, and that he did not succeed, must be eiplained other wise than by censuring a faithful but troop less commander. . I hare not seen Gen. Couch :for several days, I have Written this at the: suggestion of no one, and as I write whereof lino*, I may be pardoned for correcting the flood of ab- Ord rumors which - have originated fifty miles from the rebel lines. No wan who remained to defend the town, and. knew 'of the actual condition of of has. given out or sanc tioned them. Very respectfully, yours, - A. K. McCLUIt.E. J3l) ZeregrapQ. From Washington.
