terday.. One of them was that of .a horse and
carriage, on State street. A. small .child of
Mr. Robinson's was run over. One of the
horse's feet struck the child's face, and
bruised it seriously. No other dumagei were
done. •
The other case was that of a horse attached
to a carriage, running off on Chestnut Street,
and up Dewberry alley, towards Market. The
carriage was upset and badly liroke - n. The
occupants, a man and two womeu,
thrown out, but none of them were injured.
A PIIINTDIGI OFFICE BECOME Ali
ABsEJ AL.—
When Faust and Guttenberg islore developing
the great idea of printing, they imagined that
by the influence of the art, the. ways, of pace
would be broadened and lengthened. Btit if
these worthies could visit a modern priliting
office, how they would be startled to see the
change from what in their glorious dream of
reformation, they had hoped to see achieted
for peace by the printing office. For instatice;
every compositor in the TBEFAI/Ara office has
worked with a rifle hanging at . the side of his
stand, ready for immediate use. This is war
in earnest. The "boys" %eau no idle
" show," by this preparation, as the rebel in
vader will find, should he show himself in the
banks of the Susquehanna.
I:ESTE/WAY our city presented a lively ap
pearance, notwithstanding the fact . that the
day was the Sabbath, and business suspended.
Military companies were on the move during
a portion of the dayi hundreds of skodaddlers
from Cumberland Valley passed through with
their stock; and the people were on th . c,Aook:
out for news. The churches, were rather
slimly attended. When the afternoon tram
arrived from Chambersbetrg 'a large crowd con
.
gregated at the depot. The sad intelligence
of the burning of that town by the rebelftends
cast a gloom over our citizens generally, yet
some of the copperheads, wholove the rebels
dearly, declared that the burning of phtim
bersburg was merely "retaliation for I t h) de
struotion of Gov. Letcher's residence:" They.
had doubtless forgotten that that account had
been squared by the burning of Gov. Brad
ford's house, near Baltimore... The . arrival
here of seven rebel prisoners who_ had been
engaged in applyingthe torch to the tknU(liege
in Ohambersburg, caused considerable e4ciite
ment, and it was feared that an atterapt-woUld
be made to rescue them from the hands, of
the guards for the purpose of inflibting upon
them summary punishment for their Bell
nets. Order was, however, observed, and the
prisoners were put in a place of :Tare-keeping.
Our home-rebels had all sorts.of era rittearts
in circulation in regard to defeats of Grant
and Sherman, and of a tremendous Trebel
force at Hagerstown, but the reeelpt'of gio
rions news from Grant suddenly conteadie(ed
their rumors of his defeat, and iiialiable r& A „
ports from Hagerstown ,. put the lie ttl The
other. It is to be regiotted that semeit bur
traitors did not reside' in. Charnberabutg.'
Doubtless they would have to, different:4opin
ion of the rebels in arms, from • that
they have entertained.
