rye crops in this vicinity have been safely
housed. The crop was a heavey one, and the
weather having been very favorable, the grain
was gathered in excellent condition.

Col. Nagle was in command of the brigade.

ON Sunday morning next, Rev. D. A. L.
Laverty, of the Fourth Street Bethel, will
preach a sermon upon the subject of Sabbath
Schools. In the evening of the same day
Rev. L. will preach the first of a series of
sermons to the young, in the Bethel.

Street. Bethel held its celebration to-day, on
Independence Island. There was a large at
tendance, and the occasion was one of rare
interest to those connected with the 'school.

townsman, Capt. G. Washington Fenn, has
received authority to raise a company of men
for one year's service. Capt. Fenn hair had
considerable experience in the field, and be
ing thoroughly conversant with military mat
ters, will make a good officer. Tho head
quarters for recruiting are in the Exchange,
on Walnut street.

goods by sample do not require a licen3i3; if
the firm for which they are engaged has a
dealer's license. Clerks traveling on foot or
by wagon and selling goods, must bave a
pedlar's license. Clerks traveling by railroad,
steamboats, dm., &c:, displaying and selling
goods at hotels, stores and other pla4s, must
have dealer's license. Jewelry pedlar . ; selling
dry goods by original piece or palltage must
pay fifty dollars license.
A tzw fishing lamp has been invented,
which consists principally of a lantern, air
tight and water-tight, having a double roof to
ratify the air, from which it is conveyed by,
pipes to tho foot of the burner. This air is
supplied by means of a flexible tulri), and' a
similar tube is fitted to the roof to carry off
the smoke and consumed air. It may ,be
constructed for oil or gas. It can be let
down into the water twelve feet or mor !to
allure the fish, which axe readily attractid py
the glare of the light, and which - almost in
sures suoceall. It may also ba need with ad
vantage for the examination of aubtxte4e
ships.

of fine Havanes and meerchanms will prob.-
ably soon have to forego such luxuries. The
tax on tobacco is very heavy. A number of
the most extensive segar manufacturers 'of
New York, have suspended business, owing
partly to the advanced wages insisted upon
by the journeymen, and partly to the heavy
taxation. If the cost of manufacture could be
reduced to the old standard, the tax would
not be burdensome. Under the' new rates,
segars that on the 30th of June were sold for
$45 per thousand, cannot now be furni S bed
for less than $B5 or $9O per thousaudo

live and growing snake in the stomach. I It
has now gown so laitye that it distends the

outside as large as a quart bowl. Upon
pressing with the hand the reptile
recoils arer,produces...groat distress in the
stomach. When fish or meat is being cooited
in the room, if the snake is not satisfied With
food, it rises up in thethreat, producing stran
gulation. When dashing food, it manifeuits

no way in which this snake can be remotred
