Dispefches received in this city yesterday

&j. Gen. Lew Wallace was making a rapid
a6anco to meet the rebel forces, and our
latest advices rekzesent him to be skirmish
ing with the enemy.

to have retired to laarPer's Ferry, but what is
the extent of his.force or means of resistance
at that point we are of course prevented, from
stating. No doubt he will be able; at least,
to give the rebels a warm reception in that di
rection.
Yesterday aftersoon our troops were driven
from Hagerstown, ,and our advanced lines at
latest accounts were at Greencastle. The sour
-,
ads from which we derive this intelligence also
gities us the news that the rebels are alike
violent and reckless in their conduet. Neither
mpecting private _property or person.
'All our information leads to the conviction
that there are no rebels within the State of
Pennsylvania. We, were overwhelmed with
rumors, last night that a :rebel force was ad
vancing on Clutnibersburg. These rumors,
hewever, Were Without foundation, the re

salt of the panic which now pervades the
Cumberland valley.
We refer our readers to the proclamation of
Governor Curtin, calling for 12,000 additional
troops to defend Pennsylvania from invasion.
This appeal is directed to the young men.of
the• Commonwealth,
° and,. of course, will be
responded to in a manner becoming the valor
,ogAtir citizens and - the reputation of the Com
monwealth.
