A. large body of rebel C ava 1r y that moved
around on our left, is now at Ream's Station,
on the Petersburg and Weldon railroad.
Gen. Wilson's id division of cavalry passed
this place a few days ago, en route tor' the
Lionville and Richmond railroad.
They were too, slow,. and Wilson reached
the road destroying, many'nailes of track be
fore he retraced his steps, meeting no oppo,
sition until he neared the point from which
ho started. All the track was composed of
strap iron placed upon wooden supports.—
The one destroyed the other, as the track was
torn up and placed upon the wooden sleepers,
and burned until it was bent and useless. i
A locomotive and train of cars were sur
prised at one station and before the engine
could move off all were in the hands df pur
men. The ears' were crowded with refugees
from Petersburg, all the cars with the locomo
tives were destroyed. Having accomplished
his work in a most successlul manner Gen.
Wilson returned. Over twenty miles of this
valuable road was rendered completely useless
in a less number of hours.
When his advance guard neared lleara's
station, the enemy was discovered in 'tome.
They had been patiently awaiting his return
at this place, and all the cavalry they could
muster was spread out between our gallant
soldiers and their infantry supports. They

An officer Succeeded in reaching Geneial
Meade s headquarters with intelligence of their
awkward position, and the Sixth corps being
on the extreme left, and nearest the scene of
strife, was instantly dispatched there to divert
the enemy's attention.
A division of the 2d corps soon followed,
supported by CoL Collis' provisional brigade.

mediate front would have opened on us sav
agely, but all were .disappointed—their troops
having been moving all the afternoon in the
direction of our left and rear on Burnside's
line.
The rebels' begin to nse their mortars
nightly / throwing shell with more accuracy
than is then usual habit.
Gens. Grant, Meade and Butler met :at
Gen. Burnside's headquarters to-day. The
meeting was unofficial, being of a purely ac
cidental nature.

Bat, I have the honor to report that an at
tack was made on this place at 44- o'clock A.
a., by the 10th Mississippi rebel regiment,
under command of CoL Loather.
The garsison had just completed the stock
ade on which they were_engaged when you
left, and in it they fought bravely, though
their pickets had been =prised, and the reb
els were close , upci them before they were
discovered.
The Lexington had steam'-up and moved
immed ately out into the stream, and opened
on them a rapid fire. the enemy was quickly
repulsed, and retired to the woods.
We have no casualties, and of the garrison
one was killed and four, wounded; one negro
was killed and two families of refugees car
ried off. Two dead and three wounded rebels
fell into our hands, but most of their killed
and wounded were dragged off the field.
The wounded,Federals and rebels are being
cared for in this ship.

QENERAL POBLADO COMING TO THE UNITED

The New Orleans Era contains the follow
ing communication from a correspondent in
Mexico :
Moirrsaar, Rine 8, 1864.
"Some ten days ago Gen. Doblado tried to
make a push against the imperial party at a
town called Matehuala, some eighty leagues
from this place. His force numbered two
thousand five hundred men, with ten pieces
of artillery. He made a good push, but was
unfortunate, losing everything. • Several of
his officers were taken prisoners and shot.
"Among them was an American by the
name of Rodgers. The French, after ill
treating him, shot the poor fellow because he
was an American ! The French commander,
Col. Lamar, said that the Yankees have no
right to meddle in the Mexican question,
therefore I suppose that only the French have
this privi'ege. Poor, brave man, he stood like
a hero and war shot down; several other offi
cers suffered the same bloody penalty. Gen.
Doblado arrived here safe on the 3d, and had
a long private interview with Col. de Bordon,
now Gen. de Bordon.
"The state of the Government is very bad.
General Negrette is the only one who labors
hard to keep things in order; all appears to
be in disorder. General Quesada, who com
mands at Saltilla, shot on the sth two officers,
Colonel Bruno Losano and Major ligartechea.
both accused of mutiny. Every one here
seems very blood-thirsty. I have just under
stood that General Doblado goes to the United
States with General de Borden, and that
great things are expected from both.these gen
tlemen. Juarez and his cabinet appear to be
a dead thing.
Secessionists -are now gaining strength
every clay, although the Juarez Government
does all it can to keep them under. Great
things are expected from the American people
if .Richmond is taken. The Mexican people
pray for the triumph of our Cause, and we
mast help them against their invaders.
"General Gonzalez Ortega will be here in a
few days with some 6,000 men, well armed.
The French have lately made no demonstra
tions against this city, and are not likely to
do so."
